Title: Favorite Bizarre Uproar?
Post by: Fluid Fetish on November 19, 2016, 11:59:00 PM
Night before last I decided to put on my copy of What's Your Pleasure Sir? only to find that right as SS Offizer's vocals start to come in on Side A ("WHAT'S YOUR PLEASURE SIRRRRR!!!") my record all of a sudden skips....and then skips again...and again...through about 2 minutes of the record. I assumed that it was just my shitty turntable but after trying a record cleaner, after trying 3 different record players, messing with my needle/arm for hours, it skips in the same spot every time. What I've been told is the grooves have probably been worn down. I bought this used, so I'm pretty sure I got someone's old record but this is the first time I've EVER worn out an LP before. I think my Deathpile- GR is starting to do it now too..

In honor of my overplayed and fallen What's Your Pleasure Sir, what's your favorite or most played or most coveted BU album/split/ep whichever? Mine is obvious...Unsafe and Insane coming in second possibly tied with Rape Africa.

Honestly, Amputaatio. I LOVE the approach Pasi took on that one as well as Vihameditaatio. Highly focused and thoughtful compositions with some of the bleakest and darkest sounds he has produced. After that, probably Rape Africa and Unsafe & Insane as well.

Definetely the time of early filth and violence up to viha ja kiima. That was the best era for me. The new stuff doesnt do much to me and I am quite bummed that I never got to see them live when they performed viha ja kiima stuff. That stuff was just so inspiring. It was violent, it was lofi, it was antisocial and completely this 'fuck you' towards everything and everyone and all that resonated way much with me. The new stuff to me feels like it has lost some of that primal rage that surged within the music during those times. Of course, I might be talking out of my ass here but thats what the stuff back then was and felt like.

Difficult for me to say since BU is one of the projects that got me into noise and still the one I hold in highest esteem. Of all of the albums, maybe "Rape Africa", as it's the the perfect midpoint between their two newer eras, the "Hell Awaits" of Bizarre Uproar, if you want.

I like Pasi's sonic progress he'd done throughout 20 years from junk harsh noise and feedback power eletronics
to post-industrial sludge doom hybrid and i can't wait to have a copy of BU's Hardcore 3CD + DVD.

Don't have any specific personal favourites cause BU almost covers any sonic direction depending on my various moods of what
i want to listen in a specific time.

Happy 20th grimy anniversary!

Yeah really hard to pick favourites as all eras are great. The latest one perhaps isn't the strongest so maybe the next one could do with reverting to a harsher sound? Whatever Pasi does I'll always be checking it out though.

Absolutely!
It very much depends on the actual mood I'm in, which period I prefer. I also really like the newer BU releases, from 'Rape Africa' onwards.
Other and older favourites include 'Mother', 'Viha & Kiima' and 'Unsafe & Insane'.
Listening 'Liha-Evankeliumi' 3 CD set in one session is such a punishing experience.
Fifteen years of Filth & Violence is a great set as well.

Not to forget the splits with Deathkey, Will Over Matter or Gelsomina.

Somewhat surprised at how many people mentioned assisted self sterilization, not because it's a bad record by any means, I just thought it was more overlooked. I picked it up due to how good Älä Tee Huorin was and it's maybe the harshest and most piercing BU I've ever heard if I remember? You guys have inspired me to revisit it...will be apart of my playlist tonight.

I can see how this comparison would make a lot of people laugh, but Pasi does mention also the whole mythology surrounding Hitler's fecal fetish and BDSM tendencies, which according to what I've read the OSS file that this information is based on was later on actually proven to be false..therefore all this pseudo-history surrounding Hitler's sexuality is mostly bullshit apparently, despite what pop culture constantly tries to assert. I could be wrong, who knows with this sort of thing, but several facts from the OSS file on Hitler were proven to be false or unreliable. Still, it isn't hard to see what he means about hiearchy, the uniforms, the ceremonies etc..

Last year was totally obsessed with "Pakkosyotto", probably remains my favourite. Hard to describe the harshness of this one, just some fuckin' shit volcano, totally blows you away with a huge tsunami of vomitous filth. The harsh noise mess is appropriately polluted with thrown-in(up) samples of choking, spitting and regurgitating, making sure that the listening experience doesn't leave your ears clean. Filth and Violence in its best captured sound form.

Listened to it a lot in the last months, and the more often I listen, the better it gets: BIZARRE UPROAR "Melting Pot of Cultures"
Such a massive record. Easily my favourite from BU of recent years.

These are all incredible, I cannot recommend Liha-Evankeliumi enough to anyone who doesn't have it yet. I would also add the following to my personal favorites:

Unsafe and Insane (*Specifically the un-mastered version on the Hardcore boxset, it's a must)
Fifteen Years Of Filth & Violence - Nazarene - More prime junk metal mayhem done expertly well
Mother One - the whole comp is good, but the first track is probably the best in the series
Likainen Ehtoollinen - lo-fi and filthy, the atmosphere and attitude are perfect

The live material is some of my favorite. "Live Humiliation" and "Private Show 2" are frequently in my tape deck. Something about the raw power of the loops and totally maniacal vocals... it's a bummer because I may never see this project live.

As for studio recordings, "Viha and Kiima" and "Purification" are near the top of my list. There remains to be a lot of releases that I haven't heard yet.

Special mention to Vihanmiehet as well. This was a blind buy simply because BU was involved. Hypnotic and harsh drone anthems for a dying world.

I agree.  His contributions (both the live performance and the rehearsal recording) to the "Filth, Rubber, Hatred, and Abuse" live album are superb.  He is a true master of creating atmosphere that few have been able to fully match.

I will probably never see him live either, so it's a shame that he deleted the F&V youtube channel with the awesome live performance of Bizarre Uproar (and Snuff) on it.  Hopefully those will be made available one day (I think some might already be, actually).

Still, those are some amazing bass tones.  I think I read about this performance in an interview, where he said that he played in almost total darkness.  I guess that presentation is interesting, as he sort of seems similar to someone who, like Clive Barker, prefers to show - to have the audience see everything in detail.  Then again, he also appears to recognize that there is more than meets the eye in some of his other work (XE especially).

Cunt Animal is very good. Two long tracks, kind of hypnotic atmosphere but also very harsh. Especially liking the looping feedback bit / riff in the second track (this can also be heard in the trailer video). Overall I'm not so much into the more droning / bassy works, favourites are 2000s harsh releases like Purification, Unsafe And Insane etc. Stoked for upcoming Pakkosyöttö 2xCD reissue!!

I think Bizarre Uproar is in many ways been one of those who can change, and remain good. For artists who's been around since 92, just couple years silence in few first years of 00's, but otherwise always something going on. In recent times, pressing vinyl is so slow, and BU focused almost exclusively on doing full albums, that generally next album has been complete before the "new" one comes from press. Cunt Animal was done before Melting Pot.. came out, and when Cunt Animal came from pressing, the 2023 album master was already in my hands, hah... It is strong material, and like approach of band does, it slowly mutates into something new, always bringing something new into sound. While a lot of veterans of more brutal stuff seem to be struggling with lame sounding gadgets and quite dull production values, in my ears Bizarre Uproar always ruled. Some prefer the ripping all-at-max digital recording era, some the lo-fi portable tape recorder era, some the bleak snotty, but I know plenty of prefer the current sound where a lot of care and tweaking is involved in getting that crystalline clarity, where the nuance of metal objects and subtle Sherman filter tweaks and such and be heard. Endless hours of tweaking loops to work together the ideal way, that artists himself can sit down and listen endlessly how phase of loops slowly evolves. I have a feeling that next album is even better than two former album was, which is something I always felt. It is great to see & hear artist not wanting to re-do what would be easy way to satisfy old fans, but always move on a bit.. and most likely if someone doesn't like new, there will be new guys who like this but don't care much for the lo-fi rumble or screams, junks and stutter loops era.

With the trajectory that he seems to have taken as his project evolves, I found myself thinking yesterday that it would be really interesting to hear Bizarre Uproar's take on ambient music of some sort.
Title: Re: Favorite Bizarre Uproar?
Post by: Manhog_84 on November 19, 2022, 09:15:56 AM
Pakkosyöttö was a welcomed repress as it's masterpiece of sheer brutality. Maybe for someone who hasn't heard BU before this would be great starting point. Did the original have separated tracks, as the new cds have only one track per disc? Not that it really matters much. For somehow I had completely missed the Likainen ehtoollinen and heard it now for the first time. Excellent album as well. Emphasis is more on the murky and filthy atmosphere.

It is really hard to pick favorites though as others said. There are many different periods and the quality has been very consistent since Mass, also a favorite of mine. For example, I didn't care much about Rape Africa when it came out, but later on it has become one of the most replayed albums. Lily the Flesh is unique and the female vocal samples on A-side sound very disturbing for some reason. Maybe that's closest to ambient approach he has released? Or the first track on Perverse Bizarre Humiliaton with gagging sounds of swallowing piss and shit. Anyway easier to pick albums that don't get so much replay. High Risk Lifestyle and Verikiima somehow felt not that strong as the albums that came before or after that. I love the crisp sounds of the most recent albums. Melting Pot and Cunt Animal are both hypnotic and fierce. Amputated Limbs has probably best sound of the live albums.

Hopefully AMF and 4-raajahalvaus get a proper cd release at some point. Even though the earlier records doesn't represent the same brutality of what BU became famous for, I would get them anyway as I have most of his releases already. I fucking hate tapes and try to avoid buying them (and failing at this), so the recently released Rarities tapes would make a great Hardcore style cd box.

Pakkosyöttö has those moments that might be something people would like to skip, and just go into good noise, but artists intention was that album is listened without skippin any unpleasant tracks. Therefore reissue was made in way skipping is not posssible.

There has been talk about 4raajahalvaus for some time, and we did agree it to be done. Just have to see that my 20 year old CDR still works.

Excellent news on the Wrath reissue! Psychomania comp is also a must have. Hell of a lineup on that one.

Yes, a Wrath deluxe version would be even better...  I'll hope with you.
2xtape boxed set with original plus live tape version and dvdr with updated video will be out next year sometime.

Seriously?!  Thanks for making my day.  I don't want to jinx anything, but is there a projected release date yet?  I just want to make sure I keep an eye out for it!

Cannot really name anyone, I basically like all of its stuff and I put it up when I want some sleazy, nasty harsh noise, never really cared about details or "what is better" because, when the feeling is there, all of its (and this kind of) shit is good, but there are actually some releases I don't really enter in, like for example "Perverse Bizarre Humiliation" or "Likainen Ehtooliinen", nasty electronics but I find them somehow boring, but maybe I've just listened to them in the wrong moment.

This is an interesting point.  With the length of time that the project has been around, I am beginning to think of it more as a large-scale artwork rather than a series of individual releases.  Having listened through the Merzbox a few months ago, I was left wondering who, if anyone, would deserve a retrospective release of that magnitute? I think that Bizarre Uproar might be one.

Presumably this is not going to be the old Nalle Virolainen film, but a live video from Lily the Flesh performance? The film would be interesting to see but I guess the original creators might not be that fond of it being released.

Probably a weird choice but Bizarre Uproar's really early works right after the disbanding of Aunt Mary strikes a chord with me.
I absolutely love the cut up noisecore of Aunt Mary and the works of Bizarre Uproar you see in his early discography are an evolution/devolution of the band itself.
What I dig most from this era is how lofi, cut up and rabid these recordings are; a constant barrage of pissed off drumming mixed with harsh distortion whilst being stitched together on a shoebox/tapedeck is super appealing to me.
My personal favourite recordings from this era is his Antibliss CDr, that album is the most developed I've heard from this harshnoisecore style of his; the mixture of harsh noise with spastic drums and screaming, all the while being smashed up and collaged together sound incredible.
I'd honestly love to see another reissue of his early days in some shape or form, Filth & Violence + Freak Animal has been reissuing a bunch of 2000s BU material lately so I do have some hope.
I am also a big fan of his collabs and splits with Gelsomina/Sick Seed, always quality angry harsh power electronic junk noise (same goes for their BizarreSSMania collab albums).

4raajahalvaus is now back in circulation and also better than I expected. Probably because the '99 Bastard Noise split is not that hot. That album has a lots of low end rumbles that don't really go anywhere but this is nothing like that. 20min+ BU title track delivers more Mass/FF style greatness! Not sure what is the story behind the mutilated woman in the cover photo, but that picture is also in the awesome Death Scenes book by Feral House.

Right now, I'm listening to Dekadenz.
I remember, I didn't rate it very high, when it was released, but today, I like it very much!
Just every BU record has it's special quality, and depending on my actual mood, it is so great to discover something new every time I listen, that directly speaks to my rotting nerves and corpse.
Yeah, bit of exaggeration here today, but nevermind! Just revel in your own Filth&Violence!

If reissues are going to keep happening then I'd suggest Purification. I was able to download it off of the BU bandcamp years ago but would love to own the real thing. Love the harsh metal shit mixed with Fallen Angel screaming obscenities at me.

Purification has been done probably 600 copies counting CDs and tape. There is still new copies available in Europe. US distribution is never that good for this kind of items, but over here can be found still as new. I don't think new CD press anytime soon, as there are lots far more rare items that have been pressed small pressings.

BU & Gelsomina - Assisted Self Sterilization CD
Liha-Evankeliumi 3xCD - the nastiest loop / metal abuse I've ever heard. the second CD is supreme.
Purification CD - perfect

These are all incredible, I cannot recommend Liha-Evankeliumi enough to anyone who doesn't have it yet. I would also add the following to my personal favorites:

Unsafe and Insane (*Specifically the un-mastered version on the Hardcore boxset, it's a must)
Fifteen Years Of Filth & Violence - Nazarene - More prime junk metal mayhem done expertly well
Mother One - the whole comp is good, but the first track is probably the best in the series
Likainen Ehtoollinen - lo-fi and filthy, the atmosphere and attitude are perfect

Now adding Pakkosyotto to my favorites. The harsh feedback utilization is just so raw. I love that flang effect underneath the feedback on Jälkiehkäisyä Vasaralla which pairs so well and adds another level of detail. The way the frequencies play off each other and weave together is superb. And those deranged vocals buried underneath.

So happy this was reissued.

Enjoying the new track on the Black Leather Jesus split as well. The whole CD is really good from both projects. I honestly haven't loved all of the newer loop-based material from BU, but this one does it for me. I haven't tried Cunt Animal yet though.

Likainen Ehtoollinen 100% for me, in my opinion as it's the purest example of Bizarre Uproar in a nutshell and epitome of Bizarre Uproar's genius that from here going forward will be a monumental stand the test of any time and not only in the sound and utmost aggression, but also in the visual aesthetics as well. Masterpiece, plain and simple!
