Title: server maintainance
Post by: FreakAnimalFinland on April 21, 2017, 04:59:08 PM
For short periods of forum being off-line, just some server malfunctions being fixed, not directly related by forum. Only that we happened to be on the same server what needed attention. For small pauses or oddities, this may be the cause.

All files been checked, and forum software gone through tests and no errors found.

More server updates in near days, so don't be alarmed if forum is offline...

Those worrying about forum being down or any sites related, its just some sort of maintainance / temporary bug fix. This time all worked just fine for Finns (EU viewers?), but for some reason overseas people could not access. There are scheduled server maintainance happening often even twice a month, when forum is down for some hours. If things don't seem to work out, return later. Nothing very dramatic should be going on.

Probably in next 1-2 months there will be bigger forum update. Change to more current day format, with responsive template so browsing with smaller screens will be better. When this happens, forum will be most likely down for day or couple before re-launched. I will be informing in advance when forum will be down.

Special Interests forum 2.0? Any previews as to what the forum might look like if it was to be updated for those of us resistant to change?

Hopefully looks same on computer. And on smaller screens it becomes mobile friendly. I do hope nothing in forum structure nor overall template changes. Same forum software etc. Just like you say, 2.0 most of all for security & compatibility reasons. All user accounts etc remain the same.

This particular template is not available anymore for new forum software. We'll see how close to this look new things can be adjusted. If all goes well, change happens sometime this month. If one day forum is down, no panic. Should go up sometime soon and then probably little by little lay-out being adjusted into better.

probably forum will be offline tomorrow, but will be back as soon as possible.

Forum update is done! Some little tweaks will be done. It is impossible to adjust this into 100% same as before, as it is now responsive lay-out. Icons work a bit different etc. If you have issues with new forum, you can report here and we'll see what can be done to fix them.

At the moment, some sort of bug is fucking up the image links. We're looking into that a bit later, and hopefully images will be working as soon as time to see what's up with them.

EDIT: images are working all ok.   If any bugs found, post here.

It's unbelievable how web developers / programmers always manage to destroy whatever good they have done in the past. We had a perfect environment and it's no longer supported ...

IMPORTANT : Whoever has problem to login, right-click on LOGIN and open it in a new tab. In my case, with just clicking on LOGIN the popup window displayed error.

Mikko, is the View Recent Posts option / page still available ? The most useful tool !

PS: Fonts / size i dont like at all. Have to search what options are available for user to set ...

Verdana is now brought back, but the message editor seems to like more monospaced fonts... Let's see if we can "normalize" that as well. Or what do you guys think about monospace fonts in the message editor?

Excellent ! Thanks ! A small change but with big impact. Now it looks like the place i am used to.

Glad that Recent Posts still exists. Saves a lot of time and 'effort' . - Another suggestion, not important, and i havent really see any yet, but if there are, consider to eliminate as much stupid 'explanation' pop-ups as you see fit, if possible. You know, the ones that appear when you hover the cursor on a link / button.

Everything looks cool to me. New layout seems fine to me (but hey, I work in the web development industry :D )
Verdana is ok, maybe a little bit smaller compared to the previous one but no complaints.

It will certainly take a minute to get used to this after 13 years of the old board!

Occasionally it seems to bring error when trying to log in, but when clicking "open in new tab", each time log in worked then. There is some little bugs and especially on mobile version some of headlines are way too big. We'll be fixing all what is possible.

Now forum runs at https, being secure and up-to-date.

Every time I come back to the site it asks me to login, and gives the error when I try. But if I navigate to any part of the board (even without trying to click "login") it shows I am already logged in.

Yes, same happens here. We'll look into it. It may be related into "forced shift" into https mode.

I did some tweaking to the session handling.

This has been changed significantly between the old and the new forum software. You can imagine how things in technology could've been changed during the last 10 years.

Let's keep this thread active for following / reporting technical issues / wishes / notes.

Thanks!

Handful of people mentioned computer connection to forum is ok, but their phone brings error message. Most people don't seem to have this problem. If you do, solution may be as easy as to erase your cache. Old saved versions in your browser memory of past versions of forum can create problems. We'll be tweaking more the lay-out next week.

My only issue is that I can't seem to stay logged on, like in the old version. Every time I come back I must log in again. It's no biggie really but, if you could look into it at some point I'd appreciate it.

I also have some problems with the login process... I keep getting this message

Sorry, but you've reached your login attempts threshold for account BlackCavendish. Please wait 30 seconds and try again later.

If i try to wait and login I get: "Your session timed out while posting. Please go back and try again."

I succeded logging in using Brave, so no big deal but maybe someone else is stuck with the same error, so I just report the case.

I researched again and fixed some discrepancies between addresses pointing to the forum. Some of the supporting scripts used the "www." -prefix in the address, while some were without.

The official address of the forum is: https://special-interests.net

This improved the session stability and fixed login/logout/logoff/timeout issues.

Please test it and tell me how it's working now.

(In case of debugging difficulties, you could use browsers in incognito more / or different browsers at the first place. However, cleaning the cookies / emptying the cache would be smart move right now.)

Thanks!

Login seems to work now. I also tried logging out and then back in and it went smoothly. No timeout errors.

When I try to log in from google chrome I get the message "You were unable to login. Please check your cookie settings." I have third party cookies disabled. I'm able to do it from incognito mode. Any idea of how to solve this on my end?

It is right there next to "home" button on the top.

Oh I see. The only option that appears in that dropdown menu is Home. Search, Members, etc don't appear unless you scroll up or down. This is on mobile, haven't tried desktop.

Depends of your phone - maybe - but like at discogs, when you turn your phone sideways, responsive screen seitches into desktop mode. Then search is right there on top menu buttons.
Plus, for those who like the old lay-out, that "phone sideways" will give you that.

The different option buttons on the drop down  menu button seem to be there, but the text isn't visible if the button isn't selected. If you tap or highlight below the Home button then Search suddenly appears. Similarly, if you're on the Search page and click the drop down menu botton then the Home button goes missing. I guess there's a simple way to make all non-selected buttons visible?...

Ah, it may be that font is white on white and comes visible when "active". Probably can be fixed.

It would be great if in the phone version, you could still see "last post by..." on each thread before opening. That's always a very useful indicator of if there has been new activity in the thread that I want to read or not.

On my phone, at least, when you just turn the phone sideways, it shows the last post. It may depend on the size of your screen, but at least on my version it shows it same way as desktop version.

Has anyone been getting email notifications for Personal Messages since the forum was updated? I've recently signed in after a few weeks and seen that I've had a few PMs sent my way in recent weeks, but I never got emails about them. I've just tried sending a test one to myself but not received an email notification for that either.

Well - At least I got an update (via email) that this thread has been updated. So in general, the email works at the server end.

At least I had by default not getting messages about new members registrations, until I activated email notifications. Now I will get mails about new members so should not be long delays for approvals.

Bots are getting a bit more advanced these days, so if you see someone spamming totally unreleated stuff on forum, you can always click report and I'll deal with spam and bots.

It seems that by default, do not get email about PM that is reply. At least that is how my settings was.
I just clicked "send email" into:
"When I receive a reply to a personal message"

You will find it from personal settings somewhere. It may be good to check the other settings are preferred ones.
