Title: Lars Von Trier x Cannes
Post by: UGRA on May 20, 2011, 04:35:58 AM
I am curious to know what do you guys think about the whole episode. Things went a little bit too far, uh?
First, it´s pretty clear that Von Trier was just being sarcastic during the interview.
Second - c´mon! It´s a sad, sad world when people can not even mention a subject without being retaliated.
I wonder who the real nazis are...

When you read the actual comments, I'm surprised anything came out of it. But in other hand, not at all.
But remember the 2002 "anti-semitic france" Cannes case. Where the major jewish group called for boycott of Cannes due french antisemitism, hehe.. I guess they are overtly protective for their "reputation".

I have laughed my ass, since it was just an unfunny joke said at the wrong time in the wrong place.
He is half-crazy and tend to drastically respond to provocations, plus his unperfect English made the worst.
Consider that france paid quite a big price during the "Nacht und nebel", so not the most intelligent place in the world were to nake fun of such subjects.

It was pretty hilarious. von Trier getting more and more tangled in this pretty thoughtless attempt at  a joke, you see how uncomfortable he is, he knows what a mess he's getting himself into, but he can't really stop, Kirsten Dunst getting increasingly uncomfortable, blushing and subtly trying to get him to shut the fuck up... and Stellan Skarsgård trying not to laugh out loud. I mean, it doesn't even look like an attempt at provocation. Just ostracizing him like that, a bit of an overreaction.
But it made my day.

Cannes provides artists with an exceptional forum to present their works and defend freedom of expression and creation," the board said in a statement. "We profoundly regret that this forum has been used by Lars von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the festival.

A forum for freedom of expression until someone says something really ungroovy, right? OK, I get it, "MOM!!! HE SAID HITLER! BOOHOO! PUNISH HIM! TAKE AWAY HIS TOYS!".

I find it quite sad that as soon as someone even utters the words "Hitler" or "Nazi" at least 90% (probably more) of the West world a) lose all sense of humour, b) lose the ability to listen to what people actually say, c) lose all rational thought, and d) toss all fine democratic ideals out the window.

But, despite that, I find this affair rather entertaining.

What question was asked that started him off on finding out he was Jewish?

I've only seen ANTICHRIST & I could only barely watch it mostly b/c I watched it on my pc with headphones (no speakers). I couldnt' pay attention. The bolt through the kneecap was great but that's all I remember. I couldn't find the clit-cutting! At that point, I was just scanning through it....

Yes. He was in a hole and all he did was he kept on digging...hilarious.
