Title: "UG stores", locations - Dresden
Post by: FreakAnimalFinland on September 09, 2024, 10:09:45 AM
Any recommendations for Tower Transmissions visitors, what else is in town? Been there many times, but always walked in very tourist oriented areas, with little else to find than usual attractions and beer.
Most of cities appear to have very little anymore. Once flourishing alternative places all gone, but I'd be curious if there are galleries, bookstores, recordstores and such worth of visit?

From what I gathered, quite many Finns are attending this year. I got the early bird ticket without knowing the lineup. And September doesn't look too bad: Cold Meat Industry Night in Turku next weekend right after Dresden! Just noticed the announcement yesterday.

Browsing Google Maps, German Hygiene Museum and Museum of Military History look interesting, but I don't know about more esoteric places.

A bit far from the neuestadt, in the faculty campus area there is the Mayan codex in free entrance at the third floor of the library.

It seems that no one was visiting it

I'll be going this year too and have never been to Dresden before. Thanks for the recommendations so far!

I will also be attending this year. I always like to have a look at this travel blog before I visit a city/country. He lists some places possibly of interest to you guys like the military history museum, Bautzner Straße former Stasi prison, Münchner Platz memorial and so on. I found it interesting to read that some buildings were never fully restored since the fire bombing in 1945, reminders of that horrific event in history.

I was also curious about what Dresden has to offer in terms of 'urban exploring' i.e. abandoned buildings. I found this already:

Dresdner Heide seems to be an interesting place as well. Apparently there are some WWII bunkers hidden, but I don't know the exact locations. Furthermore there are two graveyards that look worthwhile: Nordfriedhof and sowjetischer Garnisonfriedhof. If there are any more cool graveyards (or other locations, of course) in Dresden I would be happy to hear about them. Hope this was useful.

For anyone attending, always welcome to join me to visit something.

I was also curious about what Dresden has to offer in terms of 'urban exploring' i.e. abandoned buildings. I found this already:

  • Abandoned beer brewery (Malzfabrik), appears to be hard to get inside though

    https://oiger.de/2015/01/06/vergessene-orte-verfallene-malzfabrik-in-dresden-niedersedlitz/35998 (German)
  • The ruins of an old tower, used as a communications centre during WWII and blown up by the SS, also a nice view of the city from there

  • A ruin near the castle Pillnitz

  • Abandoned swimming pool Sachsenbad

  • Some abandoned buildings near Leipziger Bahnhof

  • Some other places but not sure if there are really worth a visit:

These places look really interesting. Thanks very much for the recommendations.
