I normally us a rack unit for flanger on vocals but I don't like the idea of bringing a rack+gear for a live gig as I try to keep a minimal set up. Any suggestions? I love the strong/fast standard PE style.
Try Electro harmonix Flanger Hoax. It does great stuff.
I am not big on flangered vocals but I do them occasionally live, pairing them with echo/delay
I use Roland SP-404 mkII. It is a very convenient and pretty compact live sampler; what's more, it is a pretty good multi-FX box that you can use at the same time as triggering samples.
It has a separate quarter-inch TRS input for dynamic microphone at the bottom (in addition to left/right stereo line inputs in at the top if you want to run external signal through it). You can plug the mic directly into it, or you can plug mic into a mixer and connect Aux Send to SP404, either works fine (in case of a latter, you can use condenser mic as well, although I doubt condenser mics are used live much? but at home for sure).
You can stack up up to five effects in one chain, out of 40 or so effects that box has. It has straight up flanger (and you can tweak depth, rate and some more obscure parameters like resonance) and several different Chorus-like effects that can be tuned to sound as a variation of a flanger. Boss BF-3 Flanger, works very well. Five knobs: one for quantity, another for resonance, depth and rate knobs as you can find on every other flanger pedal. The must, in my opinion, is the fifth option, which is composed of the following options: momentary, standard, gate/pan and ultra mode. It is affordable, light (as the other Boss pedals), very easy and it has a mono/stereo output, which is great if you send it into a reverb/delay pedal.
Also, I second Mr. Wertham about the EHX Flanger Hoax, which is insanely good, but damn huge. I used to do feedback loops with it before sending the signal into a chain of pedals. It can get some unexpected results when it comes to noise. I hadn't the chance to try on vocals though.
I am still a sucker for anything BOSS and I would have suggested that as well!
I just built a Boss BF-3 clone for this exact purpose. I want to make sure I test it with tape/recording first because hearing it live in the room is different than playback.
I think I will finally have to break down and buy a Roland SP-404. All my friends have told me to do this for years but I'm a cheapskate and want to DIY everything, build it myself or make everything complicated. Will definitely check out the EHX first.
I didn't realize you could use the effects on vocals separate from the samples etc on the Roland SP-404. I guess it's finally time. Thanks for the input.
