Title: Black Noise
Post by: Andrew McIntosh on June 23, 2012, 04:43:49 AM
I skimmed through the older pages of the forum and didn't find this as a topic yet, so please forgive the redundancy if it's already been brought up.

I'm thinking not just of bands/projects that have a great deal of filth and distortion with their recordings, but those that use their instruments to create actual noisescapes. Either is acceptable.

I suppose Abruptum would be the something like the originators of this sub-genre. There could well be BM groups leaning more towards pure noise than structured songs before them, but I haven't heard of them. I tend to think that Venom's use of pretty blatant noise, such as tracks like "Aaargh!" and Cronos's live bass solos, could be said to have paved the way from music towards something more blatant.

Stalaggh also should rate a mention - leaving aside rabbiting on about their "vocalists", they do come up with some pleasant sounding material. The layering of their recordings by Xai-Das on the "Projekt Terror" dvd sound pretty satisfying to me.

Please list more (I imagine our own Ryan Wreck will have something to add, at least).

I don't know a huge amount of black noise groups but artists such as Flooded Church of Asmodeus, Prodeath, Sutekh Hexen and Kärsimysnäytelmä! I really like.

Yea, I was purposely avoiding that site.

As well, those threads date back to '07. I'm imagining there's been a few new things since then.

Definitely check the Funeral Stench section of my forums. I don't listen to a whole lot of this stuff but the "Black Noise" artist which stick out to me from my findings are Dead Times, Black Cilice, Flooded Church of Asmodeus, Death Cult Suicide, Hatjan, TRTRKMMR and Vucub Cane who is more of a "Raw BM" band but it is extremely lo-fi so it comes across as pretty damn noisy. My two favorite are Dead Times who have a solid Industrial sound to them and aren't harsh or raw and Death Cult Suicide who is extremely raw and features members of GDH/Satan's Din Label.

Then you have stuff like Endless Humiliation, Hakaristi, City Bones and Polyurethane who are extremely Noise influenced and have Metal leanings but I wouldn't call them Black Noise and it may be difficult to really put some of it into the context of Metal. Here is some Polyurethane live http://vimeo.com/24038775, Hakaristi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuEOXaniBY8 and this is Side A from the Endless Humiliation record http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXYPdAuaDzM so you can kind of see what I'm talking about.

Brobdingnagian is a really bizarre example of something that could loosely be described as "black noise". Definitely recommended, one of the more distinct projects to emerge from this little "scene".

Kudos for thread.

Utarm is a personal fav, Hakaristi as well- even though they might not fit into the genre per se. Include a track from Utarm's forthcoming album on Handmade Birds, Above Death.

Reptile Womb does this aesthetically and sonically the best, above all others! The atmosphere of all of the recordings sounds like it's rooted in same satanic veins of some of the most occult driven black metal acts out there, but I think also because it's more "noise" is why it give that more austere touch to it, that sounds sincerely evil. Reptile Womb does a really great job at conjuring the essence of black metal, through noise.

I'd recommend anything here? - https://underneaththedeadlight.bandcamp.com/music

I guess some of Deathstench might fall into this catagory? - https://deathstench.bandcamp.com/music

I'm sorry, I'm not too up on these genre labels/terms.
