Title: Taint - Vice
Post by: KMusselman on December 26, 2012, 07:20:14 AM
Any chance of this getting the Industrial Recollections treatment?  Ever since the release on LP, I have been hoping for a CD release.  I am sure there are many who would agree.  If there was enough support, could we make it happen?

If I'm not mistaken, Mikko had talked with Keith about rereleasing Taint material already, but masters of most Taint material are gone etc. It's somewhere in the archives of the messageboard. So I wouldn't be too optimistic about it, but perhaps someone will explain it better than me

Vice with 500 copies of LP's is probably not top priority re-issue thing anyways? Of course CD would be nice, but there are others that are way harder to get.

I may actually have a metal tape master of "Vice" but I'd offer Self Abuse the cd if it were going to be reissued.  I think the record is still easy to get & it's 220g! Love the weight of it.

Kevin, get yourself a high-end turntable!

Get yourself one of those turntables you can hook up to the pc via usb. I see them on the back of credit card envelopes all the time. You'll have a load of fun buying records, playing catch-up, looking at the big artwork, smelling the vinyl, etc.

Patrick recently told me he's just running a distro. I hadn't had contact with him in years. Glad he's still running things from a tiny, isolated NH town.

If you already have a high-end system, you wouldn't want to skimp on a turntable and cartridge.  You might as well get a nice soundcard, plug your computer into your stereo, and listen to MP3s if you can't invest in a nice turntable (or preferably lossless if you can find nice rips of records.  they're easier and easier to find all the time).  Not saying you would, but if you have a nice system to start, and then add a low-end table, it'll stick out like a sore thumb.  It truly would.  I haven't done any shopping in a couple years, but entry level audiophile tables with entry level cartridges could be had for $400-500 total.  Maybe a Rega table with $150+ cartridge.  It's not really worth it for the poor sound quality of most new records, but anything pre-2000 will likely be something you can appreciate if you're accustomed to listening to a good quality stereo sound.

I'd recommend a ProJect table, but I haven't been satisfied with the durability of the motor at all.  I hear similar stories here and there, too.  It doesn't speak well for them, and if shopping now for a nice table, I'd avoid them.

I mentioned MP3s because budget turntable gear does a similar thing to audio that MP3 compression does.  At least to my ears, it does.  The outcome is harsh and thin, and you don't want your playback equipment to make that modification for you.  For the longest time, I thought my turntable set-up was decent.  I knew it wasn't good, but I thought it was firmly decent.  Then when I bumped up a couple levels and directly compared the tables, it showed how awful it really was.  The positive side of nice stereo gear is that it flushes out the nuances and gives the music new life, but on the other hand, it exposes all the shortcomings of your other gear.

I have a top of the line Rotel pre-amp, and it's phono stage leaves a lot to be desired.  It replaced a NAD 7240PE receiver, and the Rotel proved to be a downgrade.  Those old NADs are jewels in the ruff, though.  You have to get well into four figures to beat their sound, and they had particularly warm and smooth phono stages.

*your IntAmp is a few generations newer than my pre-amp, so hopefully they've improved the phono stage.

I know nothing about turntables and wouldn't even know where to start.
I have had my trusty old Technics SL-BD22D (http://www.hifidatabase.com/static/gallery/1/4111-tec_SL-BD22D.jpg) for almost ten years now and I fucking love how simple it is. It has auto lift, meaning it lifts the tonearm when the record stops and goes back to the stand automatically. It also has very simple stopping system, when you press the button the tonearm lifts and goes automatically to its stand (of course you can also lift the tonearm temporarily if you just want to pause it). The speed is also very easy to change, unlike in some record players where you have to change the place of the strap, you just switch the speed with a knob.
I have experienced many different record players, to name few Audiomeca with unipivot tonearm (~1000€), some Thorens players (~500€) and so on and I can honestly say that the cheap old plastic Technics is my personal choice. I bought it used with 15€, the needle got broken during the delivery and I walked in the closest hifi store and picked up a Tonar needle for ~20-30€.
Great player to begin with...

I threw an idea to IR for a taint reissue that MAY happen so it's mildly possible something will be released in the future. I doubt "Vice" will happen as a cd. Just get yourself one of those turntables you can contact to pc with a usb cable.

reissue WHOREDOM!!

Although I have got that great CD, I wouldn't be disappointed that action. Especially, when the second edition would have the second disc with something not issued yet in that period. More reissued TAINT cassettes - more better feelings :)

Pretty much any Taint reissue is a good choice. Though I have the original, I'd throw my vote in for the Nicole 12 & Taint - Candyman CD. Such brilliant material from all parties!

I don't believe there are any other recordings from around the same time as "Whoredom". That cd is pretty easy to find & never seems like it goes for much.

"Indecent Liberties" is the only thing I've given thought to a cd reiss but masters do not exist so it'll have to be a clean rip from vinyl.

This would be a great re-issue if possible. I would love a copy of the vinyl but it's very expensive on Discogs.

Somebody should release boxset of Taint compilation tracks and tracks from singles/b-cards.

There may be a slim chance of "Vice" on cd next year. I was asked about it a few months ago.

There is no chance for the comp. tracks & I would think you could find rips of the business cards.

I have "Vice" lp but I would like cd, of course!

Too bad. It will be great to see Taint compilation like new Con-Dom 2xcd on Industrial Recollections.

I will be happy of every Taint cd reissue. Hopefully Industrial Recollections will put out something during this year.

I suppose there is no chance of Savage Weapons ever seeing a reissue? The track titles alone on that thing are enough to get a man going.

Vice was my second Taint lp ever and a perfect introduction.

I would fucking KILL for a reissue of Savage Weapons and Piece-Meal Dissection, especially the latter. At least Indecent Liberties, Just Meat and Shit Coming were all recently done, all 3 records have been in regular rotation as pretty much all of my Taint stuff usually is. Mania as well. Possibly my favorite noise act ever.

I have been reading through a scan that I found of the Freak Animal #11 zine and in interviews with both Taint and Harbinger Sound it is stated that this LP was supposed to be coming out in 1998 on Harbinger rather than the release it got years later on Self Abuse. What came in the way of the HS release?

(And on an unrelated note, does anyone know what happened with Recalcitrant Noise? The guy seemed to have big plans for the label in the interview but none of the forthcoming releases he mentioned came out and according to Discogs the label ceased all activities in 1998.)

As far as I understood, Harbinger was not happy about length of album, but wanted it to be longer. More like 40 minutes than 30... While artist preferred it as it was. Self Abuse was ok to release it as it was.

Recalcitrant Noise person is active on this forum, so he is definitely around, but label is no longer.

Can't remember the interview well, and I don't have access to the zine.  PM me if you have any particular questions.  Over-ambitious at times.  The unforeseen at others.  Life.

Thanks for clearing that up. My only guess was label money problems. The album definitely works more than well as it is.

No particular questions, I just thought that a lot of the statements made in the interview were quite insightful and the forthcoming releases all sounded promising, especially the Bastard Noise / Hermit double LP.
