Not criticising, but I quite like these threads where there is some clarification of key requirements - you draw attention to
serious, so what is being ruled out?

Thanx for the feedback. First of all. Even though I started this thread, I don't regard it as mine. So, in these sense it is not up to me to draw a line what is to be labelled serious since the experience of serious is a subjective impression which may differ from person to person. Then again, this is not the issue either, but it could be interesting to discuss criteria as well. What is serious? What defines a good label? I think in most cases we have a common judgement re to what is professional developed and presented. In my eyes it is pretty easy to spot. Artistic investment is hard to fake, both from an angle of expression/creating and the more production/presentation/releasing oriented side.
Nevertheless, I used 'serious' thinking exactly what meaning the word holds: Serious as in professional (as it can be in the underground); referring to an individual/company that puts work and effort into develop quality (physical) releases/publications (keeping in mind there are several levels within noise publication to work from - both in small formats/editions and large scale). I hope this clarifies your inquiry a bit. Feel free to embroider what you (and everybody) have in mind is a serious business whatever size and scope.

Website is not used and you couldn't even call it a 'label' as I hardly release anything under it's name.'Label' is a questionable term with regard to this kind of thing anyhow & paying for the fabrication of a couple of tapes does not make you a 'label owner'. No point listing it here....

I disagree to some extent. I see your point and I regard it valid, but I also recognize that there are several levels and ways of releasing music. In the end it deals w the material presented and an individual/company that works in publication. Activity on the other hand is another issue. Nevertheless .. I'll remove the link to SD since you prefer it this way. No problem. Keep up the good work.

Of course, there are many ways you can release your music. That is up to the individual...
The word 'Label' though has had so much unintelligible grey area attached to it now that it hardly makes any sense. To me, when someone mentions the phrase 'Label Owner' I imagine someone who runs a proper Record Label & is skilled in the realms of each stage of production and promotion of an album, who is proficient in the technicalities of recording and mixing & knows something about what the word 'Mastering' really means (another word along with 'Re-Mastering' which is thrown around out of ignorance all to often) ,and knows how to run an efficient studio (or studios) and deal with bands, customers and distributors and money effortlessly like it is second nature.Someone who knows exactly how to get what they want out of their creative endeavours and probably makes a living out of it.I have met & known a few people like this when I worked as an engineer, and they work harder than anyone could ever imagine....You never hear from them because they are always working!
However, someone (for example,me and others like me) who pay for a couple tapes to be made in between working a day job and other obligations is just your average idiot in his bedroom with too much time on his hands.Anyone can do that.By no means a 'Label Owner', and that goes for many others in this realm. There is so much needless self importance in the so called 'Underground'.People seem to want to inhabit the 'Underground' but refuse to accept that they are ,in fact, totally obscure by they're own design and will remain so! This is because in 'The Underground', there is no money involved & unless you're some spineless arsekisser who insists on having government funding and having Big Brother pay for putting on your festivals & releasing your records, the next best thing to wave around like good old fashioned money is your opinion, which becomes the currency with which people make their moves. Have you seen the film 'This Is Spinal Tap' ? I'm always reminded of this subject when that woman says "Money Talks & Bullshit Walks".
If someone really wants to be a proper 'Label Owner',one way of doing it could be that they do a course in starting a business, study everything they need to know about the desired profession until they know everything & more, get a load of cash (which they have 100% control over) and some reliable people around them and do it properly & get the experience for real! Common sense right? I'm studying to be an electrician at the moment....I wouldn't walk onto a site without any qualifications and say 'I can wire this house',knowing full well I couldn't.It's the same thing in principle.

I feel the work in developing releases as far labels goes is not about being a label owner. That is beside the point for me. I think we in the terms we are discussing can regard it as a title and nothing more. On a personal note I would like to point out that: if fame and cred is the motivator for publicizing music - or engaging in any kind of creativity - it is just pathetic and sad.
Of course, a certain amount of quality and experience on whatever artistic level a label is working from should be expected. There are many ways of achieving this. Formal education as you point out is one option. Long term experience and knowledge is one other. A combination of both is a third. What it boils down for me are seriousness, knowledge, dedication, continuity and the ability to see things through. Its not about 'keeping it real' or any of that hip hop bullshit they feed you. Being honest w oneself as you point out is important as well. No mucking about. In this regard I have to say only a few noise labels operate on the scale you refer to. Maybe max 5% in total. The rest never will. At best, this will always be 'a side gig' to other activity/work. And there is nothing wrong about keeping it low key. A label grows from release to release, year by year, with patient work. Even though maybe some of labels mentioned don't have the biggest back catalogues, I recognize mentioned traits when I see them materialized in their products. I mentioned artistic levels earlier. Looking at individuals/companies presenting music/printed matter I think it is important to have a degree of nuance in once vision to approach the context most truthfully and pragmatic.
perhaps not "serious" as in the way J.Gestapo decribed it two comments earlier , however i do take my noise/releases quite seriously so here is : http://skumrex.blogspot.de/ (needs major updates) , some more info here : http://www.discogs.com/label/Skum+Rex
