Title: Workout PE/Noise/Industrial/etc
Post by: birthdeath on February 12, 2015, 12:36:44 AM
What do you guys listen to when you workout?

I usually listen to maybe some of the clearer sounding Bizarre Uproar or Whitehouse(Bird Seed and Asceticists, not my absolute favorite material from them but it's good for working out because of how bassy it is). Pretty basic, I just like anything that's chaotic and bassy/rumbly for working out.

HA! Noise nerds working out! That's great! They probably workout as much as they get laid!

Yeah I was gonna mention that in the post but thought it would be mean. I actually usually listen to black metal, hip-hop, crust, powerviolence and lots of power electronics and death industrial lately, but I guess thats not much better :/. I've never been into the whole pedal-toy-bending-w/e thing though.

I listen to whatever there is playing in the sound system. Silence would be best.

I think explosive harsh noise with themes concerned with strength, energy, ideals of physical accomplishment etc. would be quite natural. Are there such releases? Weird if not.

There should be a band called BARBELL (and it should not be HNW). More testosterone required.

Cool thread.
Anything that's not too ambient, unless I'm about to do a challenging set. I've listened to too much Cruise-Asceticists-era WH during strength training it's ridiculous. Con-Dom's material on War Against Society does the job. Grunt and Deathpile are nice, too. S.T.A.B. electronics is also a consistent go-to. Anything self-loathing and miserable also works for me in a strange way, Even though I don't feel that way at all.
I recently got water-resistant headphones since it's cutting season and I'll be swimming for cardio on my rest days, the pool area is nearly silent aside from people splashing and the jets from the hot tub. Lussuria, Croatian Amor and the quieter side of the Posh roster, early Lust For Youth, Kassel Jaeger and Jacob Kirkegaard suit this mood nicely.

Lol I'm working on such a release, actually. If I intended to focus exclusively on those issues and those related, I'd probably call the project Barbell tbh

Edit: I've always been into the idea of training in silence with only the sound of iron crashing down and men grunting. Maybe that sounds vaguely homoerotic lol. My gym plays dance music loud as fuck, and I wish I had the guts to ask them to silence it for only one or two minutes so I could record the sounds of heavy barbells and dumbells crashing and dudes struggling to complete their sets to sample.

Nice topic. Just yesterday I had Bizarre Uproar Verilippu track looping while lifting, soundtrack of apocalypse, fantastic music for last tormenting reps. Also Grunt - World Draped... Works great. Harsh noise in vein of Macronympha always works.

Daft Punk's 1997 Essential Mix is better than any noise or power electronics, though. Just a heads ^ for those who don't know,

Lately some ambient/field recordings/ritual stuff. I remember Phurpa recordings were quite amazing while doing exercises.

HA! I completely agree, one of my favorite mixes of all time, especially when I want to get some work done.

No, in general as well, at least you're into house/techno.

The funny thing is that I do not really like Daft Punk at all save for a scant few tracks, but that essential mix is golden.
I listen to at least the first 20 minutes most times I visit the local swolehouse.

I can't relate to everyone who listens to ambient stuff when working out. I need violence and anger to allow me to focus on each rep cuz there's a chance I could fail any given set on most of the major lifts. I wish I had my own private gym in an empty warehouse so I could scream and yell and grunt as loud as I want and throw my weights around when I ace my sets and break shit when I don't.

I also wish I could find, if there is one, a project whose lyrical fare reminds me of Hatebreed's first two LP's. No hopelessness, no cowardice, no self-loathing, no fear. Only strength, discipline and determination.

When I ride bike trails that have lots of fast corners, I listen to motorcycle sounds:

Machine loops & train sounds come in handy when doing steep, slow climbs but they're not as fun as the MX sounds.

Hm... Still didn't try to workout with noise or pe... I usually listen to Fear Factory, Godflesh or W.A.S.P. :)

Satisfaction... is one of my regular workout albums. Terror is good, and Righteous Jams has a goofier if still determined feel, but recently I've just been listening to Have Heart and xRepentancex whenever I'm working out. Soul Swallower is another good one.

Trapped Under Ice has suitable lyrics.
Soul Search is rly good but, fuck, the singer hates himself so much. He needs to blast some pe and go lift weights and mind his macros.

As much as I love black metal, I still can't work out to it for some reason. Unless it's black/death shit like Blasphemy or Revenge.

Like most people, I used to get really psyched up skating and bmxing to music at skate parks, private bowls, etc. but these days, it's extra fucking annoying hearing something blaring when your lying in agony on the flat bottom after a good bail.  The only thing you can think of is, "turn off that fucking music..."

Most of the time, noise/industrial doesn't hit the spot for me. Brethren, post-2000 Whitehouse, BDN and some Skinny Puppy type shit have worked. If I'm trying to hit it hard though, Hornets of the Pogrom is the way to go.

I mainly do powerlifting and noise and PE don't really work for me when doing that.  Repulsion, Infest, Negative Approach, early Cro-Mags, Despise You and Crossed Out seem to do the trick.  I can listen to noise and PE when doing some type of cardio that doesn't require as much focus.

It's 90+% of my listening.

I've listened to many techno mixes w/ PE in, especially Cut Hands Has The Solution - clearly heaven sent to be mixed w/ techno - but grittier offerings too: IRM, Rasthof Dachau, Haus Arafna et al.  I fully endorse this - done right it's pretty exhilarating.

There's no way I'm ever going to listen to HWN in a gym, I couldn't imagine needing to be wound up tight w/ a head full of PE in order to lift weights, and besides, gyms have evolved, many only use climbing gyms/walls to get fit and 'phones are impractical.  KK Null's latest over the system might not hit the spot for most paying customers (wouldn't mind it myself, like).  Straight up I'd reach for something a bit Lynchian/Death Country, Ritual Howls for example. It fits better w/ the sleazier, sweatier, zoning out to hot ass aplenty I'm likely to indulge in, in these establishments.  I'd go to a PE sauna, for shits and giggles.

...and i don“t think that i will try that. I listen to synth music mainly while in the gym. Retrowave stuff. Keeps me going and pushing.
