Y'all know what you will do in this topic and how many albums (from just a single one to...infinite!) you wish to insert from any musical genre.
Go!
It has been financially unstable year for me, with lot of learning on how to manage my meager finances (I am adult! Trust me!) and as such, I have bought very few records and haven't kept up on whats actually been happening in any scene in particular. My choices kind of reflect this.
Vetala/Mons Veneris - The Nines of Satanantichrist
Its vetala and mons veneris on 12" vinyl. What not to love? Both perform the kind of black metal I love and have always loved. Not much else to say about it. If you want your black metal with things like good production, good performance on instrumentation, good songwriting or such, skip this. It isnt for you.
I thought fowards to hell by nunslaughter was this year because how many copies are available and how cheap it was but its from 2012. So, one record from me.
Head Of The Demon "Sathanas Trismegistos"
Grunt "Swarm Of Parasites"
Wince "Traum"
Kinit Her "The Blooming World"
Burial Hex "Assumption/Ascension"
Special mention to Stworz "Cóż po żyznych ziemiach..." (2014) for being the only thing I really listened to in 2016.
And since it is music-related; M.A.P.S. III was probably the only authentically enjoyable social experience of the year. Kudos!

is this a best of, a listing of everything you bought, or simply a low bar of "this was good"? there's a difference between good and best of. if you can list 30 items, it begs the question whether you can be discerning or not.

Haven't laid my hands on the Alfarmania & Proiekt Hat LP yet, but I'm pretty sure it would be the list above.
Other highpoints
The return of Paranoid Time. Meeting/watching Wince and Die Kombination here in Gothenburg. The Röset festival. A recent private bash with Blodvite+Factory Farming+Milos Olympus. Did a very unusual Heinz Hopf gig in front a relatively huge audience. And I had alot of fun running my label until my bank account "NO MORE!".

There was some constantly updated list on first post just records released on that year on some board once and i find it usefull since i don`t really give that much attention release dates when i buy records and my memory is mess anyways.. i still try to get something sorted later.
But it was neat to look back the list and see how many good released stuff need to be hear in future.
It may not work on this board because diversity between listeners tastes are that wide but on metal board it was nice.
I found pretty obvious way to look back my year.
Still have feeling some of the best are on their way.
* Mark to Re-releases not dated to this year but finally get good format.
Not sure dates of all lovely BU releases but some most awesome action from Filth&Violence and co.
bigger than ever this year.."15 Years Of Filth&Violence - Pure Hate"
and even all is not golden list will be longer after i get into rest of them i believe.

Funny how you tend to chime in on things without actually adding anything.
Check the old lists like this. I always give a list...because I like lists. There's plenty of time, and I need more time. I got lots of listening yet to do, and then there's the contemplating.

There's still at least 5-10 things I'm really excited to hear this year, Body/Head, Dead Congregation, Teitanblood, Demonomancy/Witchcraft, Bastard Noise/Sickness LP, The Rita, Edwige LPs that we're just announced..... that being said here's a brief synopsis of my top picks.....
Here's my exciting top ten list for 2016 with some helpful tasting notes....
1. Magma - Live at the Opera House April 2 2016: Christian Vander and Co perform Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh live and in my mind I don't think that will ever be topped by anything ever.
2. Blood Incantation - Starspawn LP
3. St. Francis Duo - Peacemaker Assembly/Los Bordes De Las Respuestas LPs
4. Vile Intent - Machine Into Flesh LP
5. Aluk Todolo - Voix: If I read one more hackneyed review that lazily calls this band "black metal meets krautrock" or even worse "blackened krautrock" I'm going to stab myself in the eye with a pencil. It's a really fucking great record though.
6. Irkallian Oracle - Apollyon DLP
7. Sissy Spacek - Duration Groups: Wiese & Co put out a bunch of great records this year (Disfathom, Reversed Normalization, Confuse, a whole bunch of great tapes) but nothing was as wild and exciting as this one track, 36 minute skronk-fest CD featuring Mike Du Bose, Ted Byrnes, Ace Farren Ford and more in a relentless noisecore session.
8. Bastard Noise - Doomed Expedition DLP
9. Unsustainable Social Condition - Dispersant CD
10. is blank because I still haven't heard everything.....

I obtained roughly 400 new releases this year, that is 400 releases that came out in 2016... I run a distro so a lot came through wholesale and trades, but plenty of cash left my account for new records/tapes/CDs as well. I can't speak for anyone else, but my list is a beginning towards narrowing that down... also I was in a rush so didn't pare it down fully. The 30/40/whatever titles I listed all qualify as exceptional in my book, and run the gamut from power electronics to black metal to Oi to noise rock to death metal to grindcore to death rock to RAC.
Narrowed down a bit more, these are probably my favorites of the year (barring whatever I have yet to hear):
Arizmenda - "Beneath this Reality of Flesh" tape
David Bowie - "Blackstar" LP
Brainbombs - "Souvenirs" LP
Column of Heaven / Suffering Luna split LP
Con-Dom - "How Welcome is Death to I Who Have Nothing More to Do but Die" double LP
Deathspell Omega - "The Synarchy Of Molten Bones" LP
Flooded Church of Asmodeus - "Piss Soaked Church of the Wrong: A Total Holocaust of Those who Turn the Other Cheek" CD
Genocide Organ - "Obituary of the Americas" LP
Intensive Care - "Pay Pig" tape + "This Is Exactly Who You Are" 7" (I haven't hard the new tape yet)
Iron Fist Of The Sun - "Family Survival Strategy" tape
Koufar - "Minority Report" tape
Nahtrunar - "Symbolismus" DLP
Ride For Revenge - "Thy Horrendous Yearning" CD
Rixe – "Les Nerfs A Vif" 7"
Slogun / Fire In The Head split LP
Vapaudenristi - "Ikuinen Kuolema" LP

Never heard of them until now. Upon the first few moments, I thought I was in for something the Ved Buens Ende cats would create. To little disappointment, that's not what we have here. I would think they should have a strong entry at Prog Archives and that prog heads would devour this album with good satisfaction. I like that it flows as a single, long track that is merely indexed for convenience. This is why I like these year-end threads. Something new, and of top quality, I likely wouldn't have heard otherwise.
I'm going to assume there's something in the artwork or related bands from these guys that makes black metal and krautrock reasonable descriptors. I'm not really hearing it in the music; maybe some of the riffing technique is black metalish. I could just as easily slap jazz or fusion on this. It's none of these things to me, but I'm coming at it with a lot of ignorance. I would just call this a type of prog rock.

Aluk Todolo came from a BM background, and their occult/semi-anonymous imagery has its connections there. Personally I don't mind the Krautrock comparisons from reviews, it sounds fairly appropriate to me, but I can see why others would be tired of it. Been a fan of them for a while but haven't heard "Voix" until now. Being a live recording it's a bit more "up-front" sound than some releases and the rather ornate rhythm sectioning doesn't do much for me. I can hear why it could be compared to prog. More musicianship, unfortunately.
I'd suggest "Descension" as a better start - less ornate, more focused, more atmosphere, more miserable.

I'm not familiar with the specific release, but I do agree on the prog part. At the same time, I think there is a certain aggression and tone to it that makes industrial/black metal/etc a nice home for this act.
ALSO, I don't hear about a lot of these releases and year-end lists tend to help me catch up in finding out about things. We all have our own radar.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wrote out a year-end list and lost it, but here is what I remember:
In no order:
bran (...) pos - The Bubblegum Forgeries v. 1-4 (series of cassette singles inspired by classic organ music)
Howard Stelzer - "Normal Bias" - This is a 6 tape set of tape works and I'm sure it's great. I haven't met with the label owner to get my copy yet, but I'm sure it's good. I would be shocked if it weren't.
Critter Piss - Night Cap (pro CDr)
Unknown artist - Holy Holy Holy (cassette on Fanaticism)
https://www.discogs.com/Unknown-Artist-Holy-Holy-Holy/release/8338378
Mesarthim - .- -... ... . -. -.-. . (this is outer space-influenced black metal with japanimation type electronics, it is better than you expect, and I enjoy it a lot) https://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/album/-
Controlled Bleeding - Larva Lumps and Baby Bumps
JG Thirlwell - Imponderable OST
Cherubs - 2 infinity
stuff by Sesso Violento
Death Factory - Nocturnal Dimension

Somnoroase Păsărele - VOMA
various things by dave phillips
Soundoferror - Modern Magic
Brian Eno - The Ship
David Bowie - Blackstar
Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression
John Carpenter - Themes II
Alan Vega & Marc Hurtado - Sniper
Battle Trance - 2nd LP on NNA tapes
Okkultokrati - Raspberry Dawn
I'm sure the new LP by Olivia Block is good, although I don't have it yet.
new SWANS 3CD
Troum - Acouasme
Khost - Needles into the Ground (remixed by Godflesh)
Dave Ball/Jon Savage - Photosynthesis
-
I could probably go on, but I do want to say that the reissue of Coil's "Ape of Naples" was very much welcome. Other than that, I think 90% of my purchases happened with albums that were not released in 2016.
everyone is so positive.

Bought/ listened to so little new stuff this year but this is the stand out by a long way.
from responses the con-dom lp does seem to have struck a lot of people as outstanding.
with others providing perfectly good releases, though often a refining of what has gone before, this stood out for me for its subject matter and how real and honest this was with no serial killer identification, hyper masculinity, male guilt, political grandstanding and no ironic distancing.
ok, biting the bullet for 2016's worst:
mania demos-beat driven rubbish

Forgot about that new Caverne, really excellent release. One of the best new black metal acts of the past few years for sure. Just got that Ultras tape in the mail today, need to give it a listen!
Biggest disappointment: Antaeus - Condemnation LP
I worship Antaeus and I really want to love this but it sounds like shit and none of the old ferocity or monolithic intensity is there. And the album art is kinda lame. :(
My biggest disappointment was the new Arizmenda album "Beneath this Reality of Flesh". After the last three albums, which are total masterpieces in my eyes and 3 of my favorite black metal albums of all time, the new one was some what of a let down. Way less inspired, rehashed riffs and over all just not nearly as good of song writing or passion. It just sounds like a bunch of B sides and left over songs from previous sessions. Something was fundamentally missing from it that made the previous albums so amazing.
For a complete overview of the "bests" Released this December but directly to the top of 2016 there is Atomine Elektrine "the second moon"
ambiental album with massive cosmic kraut influences of Peter Andersson ( raison d'etre)
Special mention for all re editions from Urashima . Death Waltz records , waxwork records
I guess there was nothing that was the worst of 2016; generally feel able to avoid those moments most times. I would agree that "Sombre Doom" comes nowhere near the perfection of "Grave of the Archangels" but neither did "Promulgation of the Fall" so no surprise there. Same with "Condemnation"; was it really gonna topple "CYFAWS" when "Blood Libels" didn't or just barely did? I do love those surprises when a group gets that umph back but I don't really ever count on it.
Plenty of albums people jizzed all over, or currently are, are a limp dick to me, but we're all looking for something different anyway. I think most of all in that sense - the only archivist-style BM that excited me is Caverne, once again.
In the world of noise (broadly), the kings reigned supreme. As was pointed out in the Ke/Hil thread; it just keeps getting better (my words). And that's a strength metal rarely has. Most acts have this 2-3 album max. But maybe that's the strong consumer element, which noise also has, but more so in rarity collecting versus just selling massive quantities of units.
Wasn't really feeling any of the new Macronympha, which was a heart breaker. Seeing a lot of love for that new Skin Crime, and I do really have my hopes up for that! We'll see...
The year itself was the worst part anyway. Forgettable in more than a few ways!
I didn't like the Antaeus LP either.
I did like Black Christmas LP, Last House on Dead End Street LP, Skin Crime "The House on the Cliff" LP, Genocide Organ "La Raza" LP & the Wonderland Club/Interracial Sex tapes on Finders stand out plus Concrete Mascara "Perennial Disappointment" cd (the live tape is damn good, too). There's more but we don't need another long-ass list.
Probably will add the 12" from Teitanblood, too, but it hasn't been delivered yet.
I can't make a list of best or worst pe/noise release because during whole 2016. I used to listen Hawkwind or obscure or less obscure krautrock bands fron '70s. But I really enjoyed in new albums of Con-Dom, Bizarre Uproar, Human Larvae and Ottis In The Woods, also new Iron Fist Of The Sun tape is brutally good!
Funebrarum, Dead Congregation, Krypts...
Bands that got too doomy for me. Was it a trend in death metal this year, or was it coincidence that the few bands I follow like this all toppled over the edge [of my preferences] in that direction? I like all those 2016 releases, but they aren't going to be must listens in a few years.

Totally agree. Sombre Doom was a huge let down (as was the Krypts for me too). Luckily their live shows are still always top notch.
I have to add White Medal "Lyke Wake" pretty high on my list. Just got around to listening to it in it's entirety a couple times at work today and holy shit this album blows everything he has done previously out of the water. I was really taken aback by how much of an improvement it is, and previous albums were already great. This release deserves far more attention than it's receiving.

I loved Sombre Doom, from the few times I've heard it (my physical copy is sitting in Winnipeg right now awaiting shipment) but I think it's as good as the last LP, I would prefer another album but this as an EP works great for me, and I'm glad it's a standalone release rather than tacked on the end of an LP, I think it works great with the slow added in.
I'm very behind this year, still need to listen a lot of stuff (including all the new Lettera 22, really curious about it), but as far as industrial goes, these are the ones that caught more my attention:
Ivory Trade - The Distal Passage
Vit Fana - Irrgång
Altar Of Flies - Rörelsen Mellan Rummen
Body Sculptures - A Body Turns to Eden
Death Kneel – Under The Roman Clamour
Händer Som Vårdar - Aristokrat
Human Larvae - Behind Blinding Light
Lundin Oil - Between the Shields
Primorje - Body Text
Stabwound Empire - Salighet og Ekstase
V. Sinclair - Metamorphosis
It's sort of amazing how many releases came out this year, and I wouldn't have known about most of them. A bunch from Aural Hypnox; four being from Halo Manash (that I haven't heard). Three from Allegory Chapel Ltd (looks like one will be delayed until early 2017). So great that he's busy again with ACL. Wiese/Sissy Spacek with a couple really good noisecore records and a solid collaboration CD with TMikawa. Keith Rowe monster Room set. A new one from Chop Shop. Two from Tarab.
My top-5 in random order:
BARTOSZ ZASKÓRSKI – I Wtedy Okazało Się, Że Umarłem
PURGIST – Secret Habbit
ALTAR OF FLIES – Rörelsen Mellan Rummen
TORBA – Sqòrt
V. SINCLAIR – Metamorphosis
metal:
Forteresse - themes pour la rebellion
Dark Fury - this story happened before
Bestial Raids - master Satans witchery
Temple nightside - the hecatomb
best reissues: Vornat 2xLP, Spear of Longinus "domni" lp
Noise:
Con-Dom
Kontinent - Death technologies
Ames Sanglantes - Human Pillar
Kevlar- Criteria
Human Larvae - Blinding light
Con-Dom – How Welcome Is Death To I Who Have Nothing More To Do But Die wins it all!

I ran into conflicting release dates for Grey Area. There's the confusion. Sorry.
No problem, the confusion actually makes sense. I just noticed it's up on the BP Bandcamp and listed from May 2016...I'll have to give it a listen. Thanks for the help!
why no worst of the year? this is after all part of the thread.

Maybe there is no worst because one tries to avoid buying duff music?
