Title: Contemporary Free Jazz
Post by: holy ghost on February 27, 2018, 06:20:29 PM
I am aware of some really great out there contemporary stuff like Dead Neanderthals and Burning Tree - in particular Burning Tree released an album a few years back called Lammergyer that was just devastatingly out there and I've kept up with buying everything I can get my hands on from them, but I'm trying to seek out more contemporary artists. I figure mining this board for suggestions might help narrow down the search rather than blindly hitting some band amp tags.

There's a few noisecore/noise bands like Massola doing a Painkiller styled thing who are great but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be really down to hear them. I am interested in either noise people playing jazz or jazz people playing jazz.

I like "A" TRIO out of Lebanon - when I bought their cd "music to our ears" I asked one of the members about the music, he said "noise. big sound from small instruments", and that´s just what it is. No drums. Really good.

Perhaps totally off-base, perhaps separate thread worthy, but with the Twin Peaks return I might suggest a detour along "dark jazz" alleys.

Covers of The New Sadism, The Sodality, Dead Body Love, etc

Principle perv is also responsible for Cronaca Nera, which fairly recently released a memorable collab with ACL.

edit for reference, pretty far from jazz

Metrocide VS JoAnne Powers
Anyone remember Metrocide? Before Mr Ruby focused his energies on Burial Hex. I thought the project was quite great, some of the harshest shizzle I'd heard to that point. This particular release was an anomaly. Harsh noise with plenty of sax squealing and even some proper jazz drumming. And, harsh. My memory is hazy so today I pulled out the cdr for purposes of commenting in detail... but of course the fucker is mostly unplayable (along with almost all my other noise cdrs NOT released by Stim's Harshnoise label). Still I wonder if Mr Ruby has other harsh jazz inflected endeavors kicking around.

Of the third remove Ruby-related jazz type inflection

Wasteland Jazz Unit is great.

Tiger Hatchery, who recently did an LP on ESP-Disk', is great too.

A band I've seen many times recently in Copenhagen, and that I really enjoyed, is Yes Deer.

The stuff Chris Corsano is doing (including Dissention with Stefan Jaworzyn from Skullflower/Whitehouse/Ascension/Descension) is also always great.
