Ligeti piece with nice partiture. I think I've mentioned Ligeti's work before. I think most should be familiar with his music for Kubrick film, but besides the avantgarde classical and some decent chorus drone music, also electronic works exists. I have not much experience on it. Above piece is somewhere between annoying and interesting. At some point you feel what the fuck for you're listening R2-D2 going nuts, but at the same time, there is certain elegance and sense of timing what actual composer has, as opposed to some random wall of oscillation.

A nice little performance and quite fun to watch. The influence from Muehl and Brus seems obvious, so it's not exactly breaking new ground, but rather follows the cues from traditional actionism. Thanks for posting though.

That SCHMUCK performance was such a surprise! I happened to be in this very same park by accident. I had no clue there is this "art slum" happening, and equally clueless about the performance. We are sitting across the park when wife comes to say "there is noise gig happening", and I'm like "what? noise gig?" and just didn't believe it. Then we walked to see about half of the gig. You see mr. Sick Seed very briefly among audience. Then later night drinking beer in same park with guys of Owl, Squamata, Umpio, Sick Seed, Solar Horn etc.
It was very amusing to simply by accident walk into harsh noise gig in bright daylight in park middle of city.

It's not the complete perfomance, the full show was 35 minutes long. Extreme Spoken Word / Power Electronics set. I think it will not give so much for people, who don't understand the language, because it was a very vocal/lyrics centered perfomance... though the last 10-15 minutes getting very noisy, that part was not recorded, just some minutes - there were no more place on the card in the camera. You get the general idea what the gig was. However, sound of video is very poor compared to what it actually was. Live gig was also recorded with zoom digital audio recorder with much better sound. That reveals potential of Contortus better than this sound of some sort of phone vide recorder. Giant sawblade instrument sounds very good.
Oh I'm sure it sounds nothing like actually being there seeing as it's a shit quality cellphone vid, but I got the gist of it and from what I heard it sounded good. Would be great to hear the proper recording of course.

The glory of Mikawa's set shines through here...Masonna comes off a bit funny and flat to be honest, but I bet it killed in person. Pain Jerk looking as studied and technical as when I saw him in London in Feb (he was dressed like a rapper btw). Really struggle with Solmania in general and this kinda bored me here. Yep, smashing a custom guitar, ok. Again though, bet if this was in person and not suffering from shit sounds of the guitar bumping off the venue floor in the video camera it'd probably be good. Gonna revisit the rest NOW.

These are done using Adobe After Effects, it has a plugin called "Time Blend FX" which as far as I know pretty much nobody has ever found a use for before haha, it allows one to make a feedback/echo chain of other effects, albiet in a very clunky and awkward way. So you can make internal video feedback basically using most of the other fx that AE offers. Most of these i started with a tiny bit of noise (visual noise i mean) and then some trace edges etc and a very slight scale and rotation (with the centre point scripted to drift randomly) to give it these crazy infinite zooms. Very promising technique with endless possibilities since every slight tweak is amplified massively. Sometimes you get endless complexity and sometimes it just zooms to nothing. It's a lot like pedal chain feedback harsh noise really except I have to render it rather than any kind of realtime control.

If I remember correctly from an interview, their methods are purely analog. Sterile - clinical perhaps - is certainly their aim. Very polarizing.

This Grunt performance is captured on video, and the quality is so poor, that I think it reinvents the original song. This is an example, to me, of Noise being recreated by having such open guidelines / being less definable.. Constantly sticking by 'official' editions kind of defeats the purpose of Noise. Every live performance should be a defiance of original intent / creation. This is a good example of the endless possibilities of Noise.

The noise made by the artists became a metaphor of human's inferference with the environment.
Everything was recorded on locations on cameras and portable recorders. There was no additional audio/video recording in the postproduction process. The concerts were quite loud.

Everything was recorded on locations on cameras and portable recorders. There was no additional audio/video recording in the postproduction process. The concerts were quite loud.

I'm glad you liked it! It was screened about 40 times in Poland, Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and UK. Some events were bigger festivals, some private screenings. There was an idea to release this as DVD one day, but recently Radek Sirko (director) decided to release it via youtube instead, so here you are. So I assume DVD is not coming.
Anyway if you want to screen it during some sort of gathering, fest or even watch it at home you are free to go. Just ask me for download link.
Believe me it works much better with PA and screen than on laptop display ;)

I have been rather pleaded with Grunt's recent efforts to incorporate VIDEO into the music.
I am excited to see where Mikko takes this new endeavor as the video content becomes more complex.
The videography is by all means stellar. His years of photography discipline shines through here.
He certainly knows his way around a camera.
Content will likely develop into something more, with more intricate plot lines and content.
It is definitely a step in the right direction.
Grunt has always been the most inspiring music project / band for me, personally.
It has had the biggest impact on my desire to venture down a similar road.
So, I am rather stoked.

How To Be A Body Without A Thought was some guitar/drum noise.
Landscapes of Nothing was less noise and more my usual experimental "industrial gagaku".
Different Mechanics was made using my body, amplified typewriter, junk, saxophone.
No Mind was more of a meditation, but clearly I chose the wrong time and place to do this one.

I'm wondering if it's a microphone... Could explain why he is shoving it into his mouth and blowing into it. Almost looks like he was playing that and the contact mic off each other for additional feedback and vocal manipulations. Just a guess though.

I'm wondering now whether it might just be something homemade, but it does seem like some kind of microphone/contact mic/sensor or something. Either way, it looks fun.

Another show way out in god's country in Southwest Michigan. Middle of nowhere so noise ordinance isn't much of an issue and the neighbors keep to themselves. For a Monday night the turnout was really great. Strong noise scene here and luckily someone filmed all of the sets.
Sonic Abuse - It went alright. First time recording samples straight to the 404 in a live setting to be used on the fly, as opposed to showing up with a bank of pre-recorded loops ready to go.

Hideously Disfigured - Newish project between Nolan (Kakerlak) + C Mumma (Sissy Spacek, Unexamine) presents an orgy of harsh mic feedback, tape loops, junk metal and other kinds of static fuckery. At some points you can even hear the classic Kakerlak crackle sound amongst the rest of the chaos.

Paranoid Time - Headliner of the gig. People often talk about the showmanship that PT is known for and it was present in this performance. Really works the crowd. Almost like a pro wrestler or something. It's always interesting to see what kind of custom built rig he'll use.

1. Mastur-bait
Was farewell gig of the Obscurex mastermind, who was one of they key noise activists of obscure live-noise era some years ago, of all things odd, bizarre and nasty! Bringing lots of artists over who would be unlikely to play otherwise. His own stuff, brings me feeling of Gerogerigegege in some ways. Material borders unlistenable, but also so funny and filled with reference that it is more like... ehm.. conceptual art. hah..
2. Atrophist
Set started nicely, almost psychedelic noise vibe, and eventually man seemed to lost a bit control of gear and set was long time very high pitched feedback, with lots of pushing buttons but not much happening. It was still very positive experience, as some parts of the set was probably best Atrophist material and for releases, if just getting good recording would be important.
3. KSNK
You can never really guess what to expect from KSNK. There is new full length CD to come out this year on Freak Animal, and that stuff is almost like Finnish answer to Jeph Jerman field/situation recordings. None of that here, KSNK set was a lot of oscillations and feedback, but also odd vocals, like chanting, ranting, almost sound poetry -esque things as opposed to... lets say Power Electronis. Set had clearly like 2-3 neat moments, where he was in control of all things, and the transitions between those moments where a bit fishing good sounds, but not always succeeding. This is of course the gamble of noise show, that without relying too much on backing tapes, sometimes it takes a bit to adjust you gear for next thing.
4. Moozzhead
Everybody would have, but most certainly Moozzhead would have benefited from louder PA. Material clearly screams for some bassy heaviness and ear ripping volume levels. This evening, you didn't need earplugs, which is in a way good. You get the clarity and all that, but also the physical element is lacking a bit. Good set on lazer warfare, fast pedal cuts, harsh noise that isn't wall, nor the cut-up, but fast moving pedal harsh noise, where entire set works with this versatile, yet at the same time uniform sound palette. So, basically one song performed!
5. Kovana
Unusual situation in Finland, almost like one would be at UK gig: Time restriction was tight. All noise must end 22:00. Show was happening in bar, where staff had lack of communication and there was another event happening and slightly overlapping with gig. So start of noise gig was already quite late, so last two bands had to compress their sets very short. In a way, it worked, in other hand... could have had more. Kovana was short and sweet, female vocals, metal junk clattering acoustically over moderate volume of PA. This was not as good gig as one I saw before, but good nevertheless. Visually more impressive too!
6. Unclean
I had just seen him play solo set some weeks ago, which was vastly different. Now you got duo line-up and almost like traditional Finn PE set. Masked men, feeedback, metal junk, synth oscillating. Yet Unclean had almost psychedelic vibe for most of set. On video link give in beginning of message, none of vocal parts and such can be heard. I liked that set was fairly compact and that Unclean displayed he can adjust into different situations and styles.
No idea how many people were here, but seemed like there was a lot!

Listening to the recording now, yes, there's a lot of annoying screechy feedback. Probably caused by the contact mic on the floor. In my defense I don't remember it sounding that bad on stage.

That was amazing, I like how they really take control of the sound and there's never a dull moment. How are they doing those vocals with all of that already going on though? In my tests with that vocals get completely buried. In the case that I do have vocals going it basically pauses everything else since it takes over the mix and there's nothing going on behind it like this.
