Title: Outdoor noise "jam"
Post by: drohen on May 28, 2021, 02:19:49 PM
Select a day with decent weather, an outdoor location away from too much residential, bring portable equipment (ie battery powered gear and speakers), and everyone play noise for some time/ together. This, for me, would be cool if it did happen, be able to meet others and listen to some unique sounds in an unusual setting.

Because summer is coming, the second so far with all kinds of group restrictions, but possibly less constrained due to vaccinations, I was wondering if anyone has ever thought about organising a day like this where they live? I'm in the southwest of germany, plenty of outdoor areas but because I'm a non-german speaking expat I can't really communicate / find others who would just hang out and play noise. Although most gigs seem to be indoors, I am reminded of this Isn'tses performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8_JtRKZmn0 or some of the stuff by Dichotomy Engine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o7TMWIzhDY neither of these videos are of groups of people, but would be interesting if it was I guess.

I would organise something, but I don't use traditional social media either, so I wouldn't know where to start. Might be an opportunity to trade as well.

stuff like this is good fun. The tiny marshall battery powered amps come in handy, I have a friend who uses them to great effect.

this vid always cracks me up, from the Peskeomskut Noisecapades

Yeah, that kind of thing, or even those portable bluetooth speakers.

Lots of good examples, seems people like these but they are so rare.

There is a second way to stage such a performance as well.  Go out with a group of friends as an audience to listen to sounds/noises you encounter.  Applaud for construction workers.  Cheer for passing cars under an echoing overpass.

I like the mental visual of it. Although in my question I'm not so much focusing on the performance aspect, and I don't consider myself much of an applauder. Maybe you were being sarcastic though and it went over my head. Also, this idea of having so many friends (also, ones that like noise) as to consider it a group... how do I achieve this?

On the topic of applause, and music creation, I've never been so interested in performance, mostly the opportunity to get spontaneous moments of improvised sound. So, because the focus wasn't on some personal feat, I've never felt compelled to applaud for others nor desire it for myself. In germany, at some gigs I've gone to, people really like to applaud, sometimes they might clap and cheer for 5 minutes. It's cool to see the enthusiasm, but I just don't understand the "piece" "performance" and "validation". I'm just happy to share a moment with other people. Am I alone on this idea?

No sarcasm was intended in my comment, just another idea about how to bring noise music to the outside world.  No idea about how to gather friends though...

A friend and I did this deep in a forest a couple of weeks ago.  I highly recommend it as a way of getting back to nature and just letting yourself go.

We had a few wind instruments, battery powered drone boxes, I also took my little Volca Drum with some pre-programmed loops.

We had an audio recorder plus the roaming cam which made for some interesting stereo effects when I put the video together at the end.

Part of the recording can be seen here.  We were trying not to make each other laugh a lot of the time.

https://youtu.be/_u4silkRdos?t=2824

Whilst this clip is only 11 minutes, we recorded about 4 hours worth, roaming around the woods and being general noise monkeys.

*edit*
There is an annoying lag on that youtube stream.

We will release more recordings soon.

At one point a guy walked past with his dogs which was funny, they were barking at me whilst I played my harmonica.

I made it with a bunch of electronic-nerd friends in a park and was a lot of fun. I think we will repeat the session as soon as the weather turns a bit better.

Made what?
In any case, I checked your bandcamp, the Gnosis album is good!

I decided to just go into the nearby forest and do a solo performance for the birds. They seemed to enjoy it. I'll probably do it again, maybe every morning.

I love recording bird song. Bonus points if there is a babbling brook nearby.

Not sure about a brook, most bodies of water here seem contained and stagnant. I'm not far from the Rhine, so maybe I could do a recording there.

a couple of these have happened in Portland, Oregon and more tbd.
here is a clip of Energy Gradient performing, posted by Unseen Force:

A gazebo looks like a good idea. How big is the community in Portland that regularly attends these types of gigs?

Kept my word and did another morning recordiing in the forest. Realising the absolute endless sources of acoustic material out there, combined with my sampler/effects, its madness.

I did some recording of it and put it here: https://stream.drohen.com/stream/VB9PS0U2lZYtqL9SHRx7 (https://stream.drohen.com/stream/VB9PS0U2lZYtqL9SHRx7). Sound is a combination of the environment, noise is live recorded and manipulated samples of the environment (and aforementioned acoustic material), and played from a speaker, all of which is then recorded by a microphone, no direct input interfaces or additional processing. Discontinuity in the stream is part of the streaming platform itself, I like to have non-deterministic playback of my music so it sounds different every time.

edit: No longer firefox only, I fixed issue with Chrome, so it should work now, safari still not though.
edit 2: Safari should work, haven't tested on iPhone though.

This morning, another outdoor recording: https://stream.drohen.com/stream/XaCeYl417Dw8Wrs_1S63 (https://stream.drohen.com/stream/XaCeYl417Dw8Wrs_1S63)
Put the microphone levels much lower to pick up less ambient sound, so its quieter.

I camped out in a forest over the weekend.  We were about 15 miles from Salisbury Plain, which for those that don't know is a military firing range.  It was a particularly still and warm evening.

The sound of the bird chorus at dusk coupled with the deep rumbles of artillery shell fire made for an excellent combination - I hope my recordings are good enough for future use.

I'd be interested to hear the raw audio.
