Title: Sissy Spacek
Post by: dmkerr on September 06, 2013, 03:28:56 PM
Just received an order from Phage, which included the recent SS release "Wreck".  This is a short (28 mins) but extremely powerful harsh noise onslaught with a lot of subtleties.  I find it exhilirating!  Could have stood for another track but this one was just long enough.

Any suggestions on other things in this vein?

I remember their self-titled debut CD on Helicopter (re-released on Troniks/PACrec & later as a 2x7" on A Dear Girl Called Wendy) being very diverse and full of subtleties as you mentioned, while still being a straight onslaught of harsh noise. This was over ten years prior to Wreck, which I have not heard - or many of their more recent albums, but I have a feeling their whole discography has a bit of what you crave. It's a bit massive already; anyone have suggestions of Sissy Spacek's better releases?

My favorite is French Record. A lot of start and stop and metal clamoring, maybe not always full on harsh noise but very tasteful. Especially that track "Really Into the Haters".

Wherever you found their California Ax 4CD set, purchase it with closed eyes.
Also, in case of wanting any electro-acoustic works, buy Sepsis CD.

I've spun gore jet hundreds of times, really good live. Dash is a favorite of mind by them, though, highly recommended.

Are there any interviews with Mumma and Wiese only about Sissy Spacek?  I'd like to hear about their process.  The Ways of Confusion album in particular makes it seem like there is some interesting procedure there.

Lots of SS activity this summer (records, shows) due to it being the 20th anniversary. The next issue of the New Forces zine will be all Sissy Spacek with a history of the band / interview with John and Charlie, among other things.

Absolutely something to look forward to there.

This is seriously cool - just ordered the LP on NWN and both of these are highly anticipated releases!

I probably said this before in this thread but the last batch of SS CDs were so tight. Mitch from Gasp, Don Bolles, tons of weirdness, CDs tent to get filed and not get the attention they deserve so I haven't gone in great detail on them but seriously cool releases.

Loving the amount of new releases from Sissy Spacek at the moment, though hard to get them in the UK.

Awaiting a copy of Ways of Confusion from HMV of all places.

@New Forces - well looking forward to that zine!

Yeah, what's up with that? I mean, they have five full lenght releases of 2018 already? Soon close to Merzbow pace...
Do they really keep quality?
(Will probably try them out anytime soon)

The records tend to differ depending on who was playing and where/how it was recorded. The duo stuff tends to be the more straight forward grindcore/noisecore stuff, but when they play with larger groups it often ends up being long form harshnoise stuff, sometimes more concrete/sound art stuff etc... supposedly one of the newer japanese only CD releases is an ambient album or soemthing....

Extra active right now because it's the 20th anniversary of the band. Personally I think the quality is all high, having listened to all the new stuff. As has already been said, there's lots of variation, so it's not just the same grind record over and over

Got my copies of the 2 Daymare Recordings CDs yesterday; only had the chance to listen to Spirant so far but it's killer. Kinda similar to Duration Groups (similar or the same line up even). Ted Byrnes on drums is killer. Improv-jazz-grind? It's superb.

Yeah, I'm surprised the Dotsmark disc is on there but not these 2 on Daymare.

I tried to order the Dotsmark disc from the label but my order got cancelled and I've had no reply to any emails, so waiting for a Discogs seller for that one.

CDJapan is good, ordered a fair few things from them and had no trouble - though the box with my Sissy Spacek discs was subject to some customs which hasn't happened before.

Damn, that's a shame - I ordered the two Daymare CDs from CDJapan as well, no problems navigating their site - thanks for the tip.

I'll keep up my optimism I get an email from the Dotsmark site but not holding my breath - if anyone has any leads I'd really like to get this one!

Btw, I've been listening to Formation on my drive to and from work this week. It's VERY different, at least the first track is a simple buzzing drone piece, very straight forward, no grind/noise/concrete stuff. The rest is abit more junk noise/concrete but a touch more ambient than usual. It's a nice one.

My order was accepted and they've charged my credit card so I'm hopeful I'll be able to grab that Dotsmark one, it sounds totally wild and I'd love to catch that DVD too....

I've got the Blear LP on order and I've paid for the New Forces stuff but I'm waiting to have it shipped until October. I love how SS comes in waves, I think last year it was the Rip box and some other stuff and he year before at the end of summer there were a ton of things and all those Taperoom tapes, etc.

I snagged the Caravan C40 a while back and put it in a pile and forgot about it until today which is a shame - it's GREAT. Aaron Dilloway is all over it and the mix is really great. Two long tracks that are more "musique concrete" than "noisecore" and it works great. This would be a great candidate for an LP version as this is limited to 99 copies, says the tape sleeve. Definitely a solid, standout recording!!

Most excited for that Hijo collab but I'm sure they are all solid releases. The Hater's sample II doesn't do too much for me, but VII sounds promising. Also very curious about those Haters bonus tapes, especially Scraping Glaze which the Discogs submission has a "marches, experimental" style tag...

Couldn't not go for that stupid expensive special bundle with the pointless extra test pressing copy of the flexi.

The Hijo collab sounds like most Hijo really, but that's no bad thing.

Been spinning L/L a lot lately. As much as I LOVE harsh/grind Sissy, I'm getting real deep into their more free jazz/concrete/collage stuff at the moment.

The Haters / Sissy Spacek CD on Helicopter is good. It is not TOTALLY phenomenal, but really good. It says done in 2018, but under what conditions, I do not know. To my ears it sounds more like old Haters snotty and dusty noise textures would be taken under digital processing. Not really processed with any lame efx, but just added clarity, added sharpness, added loudness. I have no idea what the process has been like, but if someone said GX handed over bunch of "In the shade of fire" era source tapes and Sissy boosted it all up and made texture walls, I'd say that sounds about right!

Hijokaidan / Sissy Spacek CD, there is two versions of this right? American Helicopter and the Japanese Dotsmark. I was mentioned Japanese version has more stuff in it. That's the only version I have. Good stuff! Collaborations and solo works, ripping and ear tormenting noise chaos.

Picked up the "Prismatic Parameter" double CD recently, for some reason it won't play in my CD player at home but ripped just fine. Big 2016 SS group with Ace Farren Ford, Bill Nace, Charlie Mumma, Joe Potts, John Wiese, Martín Escalante, Rick Potts, Ted Byrnes - this is hands down one of the BEST Sissy Spacek releases I've heard, great clattery playing reminiscent of Topography of the Lungs type British free jazz/improv and the wilder bits are reminiscent of classic Brotzmann led large groups.

Fucking WILD release! Definitely one of the best things I've heard all year. I drive a lot for work and I spent all day in the car with this one fucking BLASTING! Very similar to the "Duration Groups" CD from a few years ago but just more.... refined? Really solid. One of the best things I've heard all year.

The tracks on the first disc sound more free flowing and organic, like an acoustic noise ensemble. Topography Of The Lungs is a great comparison. The acoustic and traditional instrumentation is more up front in the mix and the electronics are a more subdued to compliment the rest of the sound.

I like how the second disk moves away from the European Free Improvisation style, just for a bit, and showcases tracks with more open space. Helps keep the album fresh and gives the listener a little reprieve before getting back into the full on improvised assault.

The larger group recordings always feel like something special to me. If I had gotten this album earlier, it would certainly have been on my Best of 2020 list.

Going to do a more formal write-up soon, but I caught Sissy Spacek last night at along with Primitive Man, Blood Incantation and a bunch of other bands. They were definitely the outlier but there was a lot of weirder metal. I haven't seen SS since 2010 when they played at The Bank in Baltimore doing Gore Jet style batshit crazy cybergrind-ish stuff.  And I was in the middle of a speed bender for that one so it's a fond memory but also a big blurry mess of one. Didn't know what to expect for this one  but when I saw Mumma behind the drums and Weiss behind a table with gear plus guitar I knew it'd be good. Absolutely blasting noisy-grindy-skronk of the highest caliber. Vocals somewhere between goregrind and the gibbering bits of a Masonna plus more traditional harsh vocals from Mumma. Drums being processed through Weiss's gear while also doing additional ripping noise and guitar abuse. Super tight start stop bits. Eventual partial destruction of the drum set which was in turned processed and played back again. More screaming grinding blasting and ripping. It was hard-on inducing. Absolutely fucking killer and I'm so glad I didn't skip this show because my old bones really wanted to. Picked up a few SS albums from Weiss after and I'm very interested to see how they compare to what I saw.

For those in NYC/Brooklyn, I believe SS is playing tonight and tomorrow at St Vitus. Don't miss this shit.

Electric Field in Parallel & Reslayer

The new discs with Jay Randall are so good... I threw in Electric Field In Parallel to start and that first track "White Car" hits SO HARD. Perfectly edited and non-stop action for 30 minutes and not a dull moment. I appreciate how after the more lengthy tracks on Electric Field, the Reslayer CD hits you with the shorter and faster moving tracks. I can't imagine how much editing went into the material across both discs.

Each release is perfect, and easily at the top of the already impressive Sissy Spacek discography in my opinion. Wiese never slows down. Also, LOVE the cover art for both albums.
