As the title says it's a "mix" and it's linked to Neons 'zine - so I'm trying to make something coherent while using tracks from power electronics to hardcore punk, sludge or hip hop, etc and interludes with samples from movies, documentaries...

This one is particular. My boldest mix so far in my opinion. I wanted to make the soundtrack of a hot summer night. The sunset. Taking it easy, chillin'. Dancing a bit and starting to get wild, drinking, popping pills like jelly beans. Feeling fucked up but feeling the vibe still, chicks on the sidewalk for a break. Entering a weirder, darker phase... back alley sex... Ups and downs, until dawn
It's a mix of mostly mainstream pop / dance club songs, with killer hip hop tunes, Alan Hawkshaw, The Sonics or the time when Brainbombs is fucking your mind. As well as interludes and various movie samples, adding a tainted side on these innocent singalongs.
Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did making it.

I chose ''2 Thick'' (1993) by DJ Zirk as the first song of this mixtape, because to me it's one of the most influential tracks on Memphis rap, on the artists who would shape the "Mempis / Devil Shit" type of rap known to a wider, almost mainstream audience nowadays. Underground, raw and brutal. With samples everywhere, and this saxophone, sampled by DJ Paul for Three Six Mafia's "Playa Hataz'' or Project Pat's "We Gone Rumble" to name a few. Paul and Juicy J of Three Six Mafia used so many parts of this track for their productions that it has become impossible to count every songs including samples from the Buckshot verses in ''2 Thick". Break Da Law '94, Slanging Rocks Pt 2, Drop It Off Yo Ass, Talk Yo Ass Off, Busta Ass Nigga, Nine To Yo Dome, Murders and Robbers, Grab The Gauge.... The list goes on.
The final track, "Cement Shoes" by DJ Spanish Fly is also a pioneer and as been sampled a thousand times. Crucial.

Since no official soundtrack exists for CLEAN, SHAVEN, I decided to make one, mostly because the sounds are an essential part of this amazing movie.
After a man suffering from schizophrenia is released from a mental institution, he is desperately trying to get his daughter Nicole back from her adoptive family. He attempts to function in a world where sounds invade his very being, filled with strange voices, static noise, buzzes, blurred radio podcasts, along with sudden emotional shifts, never completely at rest. He is then persuaded that he has receivers transmitters medically implanted in parts of his body, and has to remove them with scissors or knives. He clings to his humanity like a raft, barely afloat in a sea of terror. Through his travels, he becomes wrapped up in the investigation of the murder of another young girl. The director Lodge Kerrigan said about the movie "I really tried to examine the subjective reality of someone who suffered from schizophrenia, to try to put the audience in that position to experience how I imagined the symptoms to be: auditory hallucinations, heightened paranoia, dissociative feelings, anxiety."

I've chosen 8 tracks over all my favorites from DJ Screw mixtapes for this cassette. The first one is "Keep Your Head Up" by Above The Law, and if I'm correct, it's the type of songs rappers were sending directly to DJ Screw to screw and chop them, so there is no track of the "original" recording. Anyway, this one is eery... Out of body experiences may happen. Favorite, no doubt. "Westside, Gangsta, & the Drug Dealer", I put it even though the sound is weirder to mix, because it's the perfect example of DJ Screw's technique, his precision,his professionalism. He could feel everything. He's letting the song play and at one point just go back to the beginning and chop the song like crazy, screw it with style, put back the word or the sentence or whole verse all over again, so precise, no sloppy move with him. He's God. He's Screw.

Strangest mixtape so far, and for a good reason. I tried to provide the soundtrack of manic confusion state in bipolar, based on personal experiences. From the rush to ecstasy, euphoria to anxiety and racing thoughts, oppressive confusion and the feeling of being overwhelmed with too many various emotions. A 2h30 roller coaster in a mind of a mentally ill.
No one has ever described bipolar disorder better than Kay Redfield Jamison in her book "An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness". From mania to 'mixed state' where confusion reigns and erases every rational thoughts, leading to an inevitable depression.
Riding the cosmos, dying in the gutter.
"There is a particular kind of pain, elation, loneliness, and terror involved in this kind of madness. When you're high it's tremendous. The ideas and feelings are fast and frequent like shooting stars, and you follow them until you find better and brighter ones. Shyness goes, the right words and gestures are suddenly there, the power to captivate others a felt certainty. There are interests found in uninteresting people. Sensuality is pervasive and the desire to seduce and be seduced irresistible. Feelings of ease, intensity, power, well-being, financial omnipotence, and euphoria pervade one's marrow. But, somewhere, this changes. The fast ideas are far too fast, and there are far too many; overwhelming confusion replaces clarity. Memory goes. Humor and absorption on friends' faces are replaced by fear and concern.
