What is he using to get that choppy snort-rumble-stutter sound? It's driving me crazy because it sounds digital like a soft synth in a DAW but I see him messing with real equipment
The whole "cut up" aspect as a whole is making me think. How are people getting that sound?
by 'cutting up' the sound somehow.

I'm not sure what sound you're looking for exactly but look into delays, loop pedals and stutter effects. I hope that helps :)
