Pretty hard to resist the title of this thread.
Contrary to what was believed for many years, HIV was not brought to the USA from Africa by a gay airline steward. It was brought from Africa to the Carribean by black immigrants, then spread to the black Carribean population of NYC -- where it languised for many years due to the relatively traditional sexual beliefs and practices within that population.

When HIV jumped from the Carribean population to the gay male population in NYC, suddenly it was an epidemic. Why? The prevalence of anal sex, with its higher chance of causing small bleeding wounds, is my guess.
This disease, so often portrayed in media as something caught seemingly at random, is certainly linked with hedonism in my view.
It's true that some people did get it from blood transfusions. At least one girl got it from her dentist, I guess.

I think most people know the Gaeten Dugas story is an urban legend, but I beleive his story is basically just an exaggeration of his pretty flagrant carelessness. He blew his story up for Randy Schilts in
And The Band Played On because he was dying and knew the notoriety would be a good story, and Schilts blew it up even further. What's interesting is Schilts himself died of AIDS shortly thereafter. I think that book would qualify in the context of this thread. Maybe even an influence on me and my writing to some extent.
My boss from the foreign film store / office i worked in was at the premiere of THE GIFT in SF.

I did some artwork form Andrea Venanzoni's article for Blue Magazine.
Devastating documentary... There was an equally intense article on Guardian magazine saying the British side of that.
