Title: Most stripped down set up
Post by: NaturalOrthodoxy on November 20, 2018, 07:51:46 PM
I'd be interested to know about the most bare bones, simplistic live set-ups people use for making noise/P.E./industrial, whether live or recording.

Obviously there is the classic microphone into amplifier route, but I'd like to know people's personal favourite simple method for creating a proper live set or recording, especially if this is one particular bit of gear or random object that gets a good range of sounds.

Hopefully that makes sense!

Ryan Bloomer, according to The Rita, once did a set with nothing but a piece of metal and two sets of brass knuckles.

I only used a broken mixer and two tape players during the noise gig I played I was the most satisfied with. And I could have done without one of the tape players.

That's pretty boring in my humble opinion. Like guys behind laptops.

I feel like samplers sort of undermine the principle of creating a live set from bare bones- though I guess I'm a total superficial hypocrite cos tape players don't bother me as much.

I'm devising a live set at the moment where my set up will just be a Korg volca keys through distortion pedals and my vocals through delay. It's a pretty versatile synth as the sounds you get are similar to the MS-20 so I think there's enough variation there to keep the set interesting.

These are cool responses, would love to hear more.

I didn't see this performance myself but I've told Daniel Menche only used electric wires connected to the PA that he would rub on his sweety body to create a noise assault. Urban legend or reality I don't know but he did go minimal.

EDIT. Remember which set it was suppose to be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghqz84uSEAs Both weirdly minimal and expressive at the same time.

I once played a last-minute gallery show using mostly 3 x Danelectro Black Licorice in a row, and a cheap half broken vocal mic

Voice and tape player

Con-Dom style with a backing track? Or manipulating tapes/machine live?

All kinds of things to be done with that set up really but mostly it'd be vocal improvisations and tape fuckery into a mic or just acoustic. Might as well share this video where I'm using that set up for the first few mins

Worth commenting beforehand that I'm not really coming from a PE place but still, this is my bare bones!

YOL immediately comes to mind for minimal gear setups - there's another video on YouTube of this performance, but I recently discovered on a hard drive I was backing up a full version that I shot from a different angle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT1JVGMFNf8

I thought of YOL too

On of the greatest noise sets I saw back in the day was The Digitariat using a spoon and a walkman with the circuitry exposed, straight into a large amp :)

Christ almighty, that competes for best among the list and there are a handful of really good acts/bands there! And a "cover" of one of my fave AC/DC tunes, no less. Very PE if you ask me.

Bucket brigade delay and distortion, in a feedback loop.

Nothing extremely sparse and stripped down that I've actually managed to make work in a useful sense, but I did make some recordings that had nothing but the Rucci Minimal Drone (no pedals), a singing bowl and vocals (not my own) that were pretty nice.

Cheers for the comments.  The sound system and tech staff at that fest were on another level which definitely helps.  I'll probably explore a similar set up like this using an amp and contact mic instead of acoustic voice in future.

One could construct an entire set with a Nintendo DS and the Korg-DS10 cartridge /// I own a little phatty stage ii, and the Korg-DS10 cartridge is easily 20 times more powerful and a twentieth the cost.

the Mater Tenebrarum Dark Interpreter synth is masterful. It has a wide variety of sounds for a single unit. It also looks aesthetically pleasing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK4pfB9Iq_w

The Particle Smasher by Electrolobotomy also makes quite a diverse racket for a single unit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4SusLL-nYA

There is a Teeth Collection 3" https://www.discogs.com/Teeth-Collection-Untitled/release/2244879 where it is supposedly one mic, no amp, no electronics, and the tumbler from a dryer. I am not sure what all that means, but the 3" is astounding.

Out of all the harsh noise sets I've seen and put on, Hell Garbage from Florida is one of few that has made an impression on me. Setup was nothing more but a baby amp, a guitar, and a contact mic along with some other instrument, but had way more variety sound wise than someone with a table full of 20 pedals.

One of the most liberating things about having a stripped or semi-stripped down set-up is the fact that you find yourself ultimately being more creative with what's being run through the gear instead of relying on the gear for the creativity.

Yes!! Amazing that Nintendo released pretty much the perfect noise/PE synth :D

I recorded a track earlier this year by duct-taping a cheap tape recorder onto the intercom speaker of an old rickety elevator inside an old school building that's been there since like 1900. I hit record, turned it on, got in the elevator, rode it up a few floors, then shouted my lyrics at the floor while I scratched at the lid of an aluminum trashcan with a carving fork. No effects or gear, no amplification except for inside the intercom system I guess, no post-process done save for me recording a sample onto the start of the tape from the news on TV. That was pretty stripped down for me.

Thanks, it wound up being my contribution to the Missing and Exploited Children compilation on Breathing Problem Productions. I may have a copy stowed away if they aren't still being sold.
