Noise/Power Electronics from China?

(I also posted this thread on the Troniks board, so if you happen to have seen it there, I haven't added anything new.)

I don't know whether what I'm looking for exists, but I've often thought that Mao-era China, particularly the Cultural Revolution period, would be an incredible topic for some noise or power electronics, especially if it was made by Chinese artists. Does anyone know if such material exists, in whole or in part?

I would've had a go at doing it myself, and actually got quite deep into research and planning for it, but I ultimately felt that as an average middle class guy from Northern England I don't any right to comment in depth in such a manner or that I'd really be able to bring the requisite measure of integrity or authenticity to the concept.

Ditto!

I know 3 projects from China/HK: Hatred In Eyes (the man behind Assembly Of Hatred label) Good For Nothing (PE from Shanghai) and of course Torturing Nurse, none of these projects seems to focus their material on Mao's China thou.

Of course, Torturing Nurse - "Il Comunismo Doveva Morire" might be just what you seek.

Cheers for that, I'm having a listen to some excerpts of the Torturing Nurse album now, sounds interesting. Having looked into the various recommendations I've received in the last few days I'm starting to wonder whether I should reconsider doing something myself; maybe a western perspective won't be as redundant as I imagined, particularly as the censorious political climate of the country may preclude indigenous noise musicians from commenting freely. It would mean starting a long rigorous research process from scratch again, but that prospect is quite exciting anyway...

*edit* Sorry, he is from Japan.  All the same though, right? heh...heh..he....

There's a decent amount of black metal and neofolk from China, although the only noise(ish) groups I've heard that aren't mentioned here are Ofanim and An Evil Omen.

What you're looking for can probably be found on the second CD listed here:

Haven't heard that Most Of The Taciturn "Nan King" album although I have an earlier release. Bearable, but not great.

Never heard of that! Care to elaborate?

Does neofolk here mean strumming acoustic guitars in the "Douglas P. way", fake military costumes etc. or are there actually some traditional Chinese influences in the music, or..?

Enemite is dark ritual ambient and I believe from China as well...

Admittedly I don't know of too many Chinese neofolk groups, but my favourite amongst them is BaiShui / 白水. Nothing militaristic about it, it's more of the nature-inspired acoustic folk style. Occasionally quite sparse but very effective, and very evocative for anyone who has been to rural China. BaiShui have some clear Chinese influences with the guitar melodies, the use of Chinese flute, samples, vocals, etc. Here's a track from the first album ShiJian / 时间 / "Time":

Some of the other Chinese neofolk groups I listen to are Vergissmeinnicht (very October Falls-ish) and Bloody Woods (bit more of a world music influence than strictly Chinese).

Just went to check these groups' record label's webpage, seems like they've signed up a few more artists from China and elsewhere since I last looked - http://www.midnight-prod.com and http://www.myspace.com/midnightlabel

Head on over to Pest Productions (http://www.pest666.com and http://www.myspace.com/pest666pro) for Chinese & other black metal releases.

I'm not receiving any sort of compensation for plugging all this stuff, by the way. :P I just find the Chinese underground quite fascinating.

only one power electronics project in China as far as i know : Hatred In Eyes/Morbid Behaviour

other noise : Torturing Nurse , Li Jianhong , Radiocore Blowjob (now inactive i think) , Orgasm Denial .
Junky from TN linked me some pics of a "duo" live set featuring a girl reading something and a guy wanking but i forgot their name .
I think that's all if you don't want to count computer/sound design kind of things .

None of them does Mao-themed stuff , i guess they have other things to think about
