Title: Noise, industrial or power electronics hit songs?
Post by: Yrjö-Koskinen on June 08, 2016, 12:03:26 AM
There's often talk of albums and bands, but seldom about "songs" that stand on their own two feet, and can be discussed, praised or simply name-dropped. I have failed to find any thread dedicated to the single track. Obviously, few industrial/noise/P-E tracks lend themselves to humming along in the kitchen, or getting stuck in one's head, but there are quite a few that stick out in one way or another. So, how about we name a few?

The first hit that springs to my mind is Rasthof Dachau "Exitus". I could list many more in short order, though.

There was a thread about "Power electronics anthems" one time, which would pretty much cover this, I think?

"This one's dedicated to Chuck Traynor!"

Nothing more anthemic than that. It's all in the delivery / pregnant pause / bated breath.

A lot of that latter early wh era has good booze it up n sing along ditties.

Taint immediately comes to mind. These two specifically, so fucking intense I find myself clenching my fists sometimes when listening to these songs:

But there is oh, so many more. Numerous Genocide Organ and Whitehouse songs could also be mentioned...Grunt- I Never Learned How/Terrorist Threat also.

Yes, "Laura Smithers" is i can say anthemic track for me too if talking about Taint. Also i would add "why you never became a dancer" from Whitehouse, and i would also add "Ritual Of Morality" from Grunt, and "Unlust" from S.T.A.B. elecronics plus a lot of tracks from Consumer Electronics

I dont know, what about some good ole Throbbing Gristle?
They almost seem corny compared to the PE/noise scene of the last 10 years. But come on, Hamburger Lady? Paper Thin Adrenaline?

They certainly have a lot of name recognition, judging by how they packed venues on their US tour back in 2009 or whenever that was.
Though I suppose a large part of their 'fanbase' are Psychic TV trancers.

The peak of the album, one of my favorite PE recordings easily. The vocals alone..

Apologies, I assumed that a TG pumper would be familiar with "Persuasion" – hell, it's practically their hit single. Possibly not quite pe anthem but easily my definition of a perfect song.

While I'm here...

In the realm of pe anthems defined by the opening gambit:

"Here at the present time in the United States we have no commercial child pornography..."

The remainder of the BDN classic in question is almost irrelevant after that, but of course must exist to legitimize that first sample (and is – the remainder- damn good, says me, even if I once needlessly questioned whether it might legitimately sit within the realm of pe proper... "Adipocere", if I've got the title right, manages to be dark humorous brutal all at the same time - much like life in general - the highest complement in my book.)

I was just listening to Greatest Death earlier this week after a loooong period of abstinance from listening to my BDN collection and it's clear why everyone voted for Adipocere as number 1 on the tracklist! The rest of the collection is damn good as you said indeed, but I have to admit I like Female Blood as my favorite.

That quote always reminded me of a part of the immortal documentary "Perversion for profit" (1965). After hilariously exposing pin-up magazine girls as cleary inviting "TO SODOMY!!" and accusing nudist magazines of causing rape and murder, the narrator of this fantastic piece of Americana all of a sudden discusses a bunch of very unpleasant, obviously pedophile oriented magazines and images, which apparently were in fact sold at some point in the US.

I have this weird thing where I generally dont hear lyrics. The two I named are the only TG I remember any lyrics to. There are records I've owned for 30 years (well besides TG) that I still dont know any of the lyrics to beyond one or two choruses. Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Joy Division, Skinny Puppy etc. I have no idea what any of their songs are about. They could all be RAC music for all I know.

Ha, no worries! Though for me to imagine Persuasion without the lyrics is to imagine... no I just couldn't imagine it.

To put this derailing slightly back on track, (edit- for me) the "power" in power electronics comes from the word/idea/concept/didacticism. Without that, you are left with, well, noise. Nothing wrong with that. Those who know the (absurd public facsimile of) me would know that I like a good noise. But just for the sake of differentiation, if you think you've got something to say, and you are operating somewhere in the vicinity of this sphere of interest, you would probably not be remiss in calling it power electronics. Call it little biscuit tin to keep your panties in. Call it...

but I assume I'm preaching to the converted so will shut the fuck up.

It really is. I especially love the fact that he really seems just as upset over bare-assed grown women as he is about obviously paedophiliac material. Nip it in the bud, dammit!
