Picked up the Seminar II disc from my hometown record shop, and forgot how heavily electronics are featured in this outfit.  Always appreciated Aaron Turner's push for noise on his own platform, even if his own output in that realm was a little lackluster.  Checking out this disc though, the use of field recording, tape and oscillation for interlude tracks is pretty well done.  I see now that he has done some solo releases again in recent years, and I think I want to see if he has made any improvements on a solo front.

I really like Christmas. As far as early OMG goes, that record has it all.

Christmas & Christmas Eve are a killer combo listen.  Was lucky to have scored the latter on a recent record shopping trip for dirt cheap.

I should revisit Christmas Eve, I have the mini CD somewhere.

Another Hydra Head Records jewel on the noise periphery is actually a companion remix CD - Agoraphobic Nosebleed's ANbRX, the second disc from the PCP Torpedo 2006 reissue. Among the remixes I found my first exposure to Merzbow: "Agorzbow Merzbleed mix".

That disc was another massive discovery for me at the time I found it.  I haven't heard it in forever, but I remember the darkness and intensity being thoroughly mindblowing at the time I heard it.  PCP Torpedo still holds up incredibly well, and typing this up makes me think ANbRX is well overdue for a revisit.

Wrote in Finnish topic... JOHN CAGE - REINHOLD FRIEDL "Complete Song Books" 2xLP
Released almost 10 years ago, but I came across it on the Drone Records list and I grabbed it because Friedl's work is often pure gold. 92 short, often one-minute pieces, which have an almost "crazy-home-recording-noise" feeling, even though this is professionals who are working in a real studio. Of course, vocal sound art can be quite harsh stuff to swallow, but it works in a great within acoustic noisy sounds, electronics, broken sounds and physical noise screech. Sometimes even unbearable, sometimes brilliant, it is worth going through!

"When REINHOLD FRIEDL (director of the ensemble ZEITKRATZER) entered the CLUNK Studio to record the whole cycle with RASHAD BECKER (who handled the feedback cabinet and live electronics), the idea was quite simple: to approach each single piece in an informal way but to do all 92 pieces in the right order. What came out in the end is a kaleidoscopic lecture and interpretation of the compositions with the help of a strange mixture of ancient and modern tools: new electronics, old and special microphones, self-built instruments, arbitrary garbage sounds, sophisticated live-electronics devices, Quotes ... "Complete Song Books" turns out to be an early hymn for Sonic freedom, a Sonic Promenade full of beautiful references."

Nærværet - Når Man Ser Inn I En Annens Hjerte LP returned to rotation. Fantastic album I listened countless times when I first got it, and now back on turntable. Eerie, somewhat lo-fi, tape loops, piano, clanging metal objects, drones, hissing, none of these  words really describe what it is. However, think of Altar of Flies collaboration that is as good as AoF at best, but also not exactly the same. Just really really good stuff. Rarely gets noisy enough to be NOISE. But it ain't music in any traditional sense. LP release, I guess one can check out bandcamp too. https://satatuhatta.bandcamp.com/album/n-r-man-ser-inn-i-en-annens-hjerte

There was link at the podcast -topic of art section, but have to mention this here.
https://www.cassetteculturepodcast.com/universe-of-the-wyrd-the-cold-spring-story/

Even if being fairly short episode, it's good! 30 mins, and you get Cold Spring history starting from his days at TOPY, doing first benefit comp tape and now about 40 years later, he is still doing this. There ain't that many labels/distros who have that long history and never really been away.

Earlier this morning I was listening to Government Alpha "sporadic spectra", just because that came up in discussions with people related to former weekend during GA visit in Finland. It's been while since I listened that CD and when some people talked about the personal importance of the album, wanted to check it out. For me, earlier stuff has more importance since that was when I first got to know band. It is curious to now listen second time the latest Apophenia CD, new on Xerxes and I would say that it is obvious how much better this is than "sporadic spectra"! I don't have any bad things to say about it, but it is curious to notice that this one is far more active, far more noisier and loud. Despite its purely electronic distorted signals, GA has developed his style to make electronics ultra loud in volume.
That was clear in one of the Freak Animal International compilations. If Moozzhead was loud, it was still the most normal. Everybody else had to be turned down so CD plays with consistent volume. If you thought Ramirez put his track loud, when GA hit the speakers, it was "all at max" for sure, like everybody else, but sounding like even twice louder, hah... Of course some may criticize digital ultra loud mastering, but with GA album like this one here, it displays how damn good... and loud, he is!

SATORI "Psychopathology" cd
It might be little misleading to put Satori on front cover, since most of the CD is pre-Satori project PSYCHOPATH. 1984 UK primitivism. There was a great compact podcast episode that tells the story of Satori (I may link to comments) and it is such a great thing to listen when story goes youngster in small town UK in first half of 80's, one arrives to other guys home with LP with "you got to hear this!". And after listening both sides of TG LP, they decide to start Psychopath and recording is junk percussions in abandoned railway tunnels, radionoise and things you could access at the time. Brilliant stuff! Satori should be way more well known. There was already Functional (Tesco) reissue back in 90s, Infect CD doesnt overlap with this CD. Satori stuff also from 1984 and some stuff ritual industrial vibe, some noisier.  Excellent CD.

Merzbow "Antimonument tapes" cd. I kind of dislike remix, alternative versions... except, occasionally. Hard to say if antimonument tapes is NEEDED, and as a guy who has vinyls, cd,.. or two.. 3-4 versions of this album, do I NEED more? Well, friend was getting rid of this so I got one. I like what I hear, but not sure if it is necessary if you have actual album. Remix might be wrong term in this case, because it is collection of alternative mixes of the time, he originally didnt use for LP. So rejected for a reason, I suppose, but now historically interesting alternative takes of same material.

It feels like Mark Solotroff was always busy putting out new stuff, but also feels as if he is these days totally ignored in "noise scene".. ? Never see his stuff mentioned anywhere, never see it sold anywhere, news only in his own social media which appears to have nearly nonexistent following. Noticed new info about album and listened couple tracks and checked out the new interview. Interview feels like its done for people in mind who don't know that much about abstract sound, but pretty interesting one:

Answer: yes. There are moments, more than one of them, properly harsh to boot, when I think that the tapes exceed the release proper, and I'm like, so glad I'm a fucking pathetic fanboy.

I was listening to latest Jonathan Canady CD, on OEC. Some of it was actually surprisingly close to some Deathpile material. Heavier and darker, but distorted. Some of it distorted almost like G.R. era, but more colorful oscillations like older material - plus of course taken into new direction plus it is clean and digital  . https://jonathancanady.bandcamp.com/album/suffering-and-defiance

Didn't notice it before, but Canady did announce ending his "band activities". Sound may be still made in context of his visual arts, but "band style activities" are done. You can find longer statement in his website from october 2024. Latest longer interview link below, got to save it here so I remember to read it through! Now just liked good old photos!

I did catch that in the announcement of another collab he did just recently with Xylon of Healing Factor.  It is a shame for us as listeners, but if John feels like he has said everything he needs to say on the end of music, all the more power to him.
Happy I was able to catch him live back in September.  I had planned a visit to Oregon to see a friend, and the announcement of a show with him on it just happened to pop up a few weeks after buying tickets.  Lucky timing; John used just a distorted plank of wood with a mic on it.  His vocals still got that ferocity.
