Sickness Report was released in 1996 in CD format for Release Entertainment, a sub-label of Relapse Records for ambient, noise, and experimental works, active between 1992 and 2004. The tracks on the CD were recorded a year earlier, in August 1995 and precisely on the 7th, spontaneously in an hour, like a manic raptus. It is the coldest, most cynical and loudest album of all Atrax Morgue's discography. The graphics on the CD, faithfully replicated also in the vinyl version, were made by Marco Corbelli with images taken from the volume "Tecnica delle autopsie" by Giacomo Mottura and are the perfect introduction to the sonic aggression that is coming. And the titles leave no room for imagination. It starts with Eviscaration, a powerful and hallucinatory sound that hits you like a crazy lawnmower. Then the morbid spiral continues with the songs Massive Vulval Warts and Deformed that take you to the most hidden and cramped spaces created by the brilliant mind of the Italian composer, without any opportunity for compromise: pure and glacial synthetic throbbing post-industrial sound soaked in death. The A side of the record closes with Brain Penetration, aseptic and sharp as a razor blade, which bangs you straight in the stomach. The second side of the vinyl continues to drag your mind into the perverse ecosystem created by the author, until you get to exhaustion with Slow Agony Of A Dying Organism, where the sound of a distorted synth seems to sigh the last gasps: mind stir the suggestion of the powerful, death-diluted stuff that is put into your hands.

The Rita - Queen Sheets

Some time ago a colleague emailed me and informed me that an artist made a short video of herself knitting to The Rita's 'Thousands of Dead Gods.' I watched the short video and thought it was interesting, but then also noticed that the woman had a link included on her 'Instagram' account for her sculptural works. I looked at her work and was instantly taken by the sheer immensity and power of her structures, all exemplary of long hours of labour and provocative patterns behind the materials. The most notable structure for me was the piece 'Untitled Form (Barrier)' which was made up of timber, bricks, mortar and a semi-dynamic use of the material chiffon to hold bricks in a hanging fashion. The semi-opaque, stretching quality behind the white chiffon with height of almost 8 feet instantly brought to mind the focus of my past recordings that delved into the world of nylon and stocking fetishism, eventually contemplating the semi-opaque salmon pink qualities behind the tights used by classical ballerinas and the expanded practice and tradition therein. Looking at an imposing 8'4 x 8' structure like Megan Miller's 'Untitled Form (Barrier)' and it's materials made me think that any sound made by the structure's movement of bricks against each other piled in a virtual sling of moving chiffon would be perfect for textural, abrasive sound source. After some discussion with Megan, it was decided that a new structure would be built for a collaboration with The Rita that embraced not themes of fetishism, but expanded utilitarian themes around the use of nylon; the stockings, tights and nylon that women wore to work, what our mother's wore for warmth, comfort, and most importantly the virtual make-up of the fabric, the inherent qualities it featured. Her eventual new outdoor sculpture was entitled 'Queen Sheets' and also made use of brick and mortar, expanding over a flat area with semi-opaque chiffon stretching over the whole of the area, covering it. 'Untitled Form (Barrier)' was also erected again in the same outdoor area, and this time the labor intensive building process of both sculptures was recorded for eventual processing by The Rita". Both records are impressive, inspired and near perfect examples of Mr. McKinlay brutal sonic talents. This is easily one of the highlights of this year noise releases and a high point in the The Rita discography. A must have item for HNW/Noise fans; but also a great entry point into the genre to see how one of the masters of the form performs.

Cascades of electronic noise, a psychedelic touch and vocal belching mixed together constitute the ingredients of Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé, the double-barreled name for Masonna. Maso Yamazaki founded his project in 1987, with a charismatic and glamorous personality who become a cult figure in "Japanoise" scene. Masonna's abundant productions on his own legendary and astonishing label Coquette were presented in very limited edition, sometime totally confidential (one sole copy), and reflect his predilection for 60's psychedelic music revisited in its own very peculiar way. He transforms his voice into noise, feeding the microphone back through a process of extreme distortion. His shouts become clipped bursts of overloaded sound, doubled and extended by a delay that displace the sounds into stuttered blasts of static.
Like a vagina is one of Maso's first recordings and was released on cassette on his home label Coquette in 1988. The original cassette is graphically provocative and contains a long track on each side. Although quite immature as recordings, we are faced with a real discovery, what will become an exceptional blast of vigor and revelation from Japan! Masonna surpassed all extremes with a full frequency violence that was as fast as it was psychedelic. Explosive few seconds of visceral feedback, fast and beautiful and focuses an electrically overcharged universe then awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. A revelation and terrific listen from start to finish, not to mention a crucial addition to the canon of Japanese noise music and its shadowy history that radically challenges and expands the terms of movement's definitions.
An absolutely amazing accomplishment for which Urashima deserve a great deal of credit, offering long overdue attention to a never before available body of work composed by one of Japanese noise's most important figures. Masonna's Like A Vagina, release in only 299 copies on black virgin vinyl, is an absolute must for seasoned noise music fans and devotes of obscure side of Japan electronic music, as well as anyone just beginning to explore this incredible realm. Grab it while you can. It's not going to sit around for long!
