Vee Speers

Was returning from gig in Stockholm, and happens to be that photography museum, together with their book shop, is located next to harbor. While waiting for ferry, there was time to visit the place. Instantly my eye zooms into book by Vee Speers called "The Birthday Party". Book originally published few years ago, and now big size hardcover edition last year. This museum had printed plenty of big size posters, postcards, magnets, all sorts of goodies related to exhibition. And I simply couldn't resist grabbing the book and pile of postcards and posters.

There is something eerie and macabre in many of the images. Very "washed out" bleak colors, children in imaginary birthday party, but sometimes with weapons, gasmasks, holding dead rat or rabbit in their hands. Always non-existent backgrounds, but careful detail on clothing, masks and whatever gear they might have.

Bordello seems kinda nice too but quite conventional when compared to TBP.

Beautiful photos and very nice technique but somehow I feel I've seen all of this before? Not necessarily a bad thing at all but anyway.

Was visiting Estonian photography museum, and exhibitions wasn't much of my liking, but found this:

Vee Speers "Bulletproof" Hardcover

In her portraits of adolescents, Vee Speers eternalizes a moment of fragile beauty. She photographs the time before first loss, the time of childhood. She captures this in the bodies and faces. And she creates a world layered upon a world, of characters upon children who are no longer children. She dresses, styles, costumes, and sometimes masks them. And the big girls and proud boys who pass through her hands are projected elsewhere. Into their battles, their modesty, their trouble. Each and every one has a frightening power. Each and every one, in their manner and in their costume, is invincible.

Not all absolute best, but it is interesting book offering both eerie costumes, but also growth. Most models appear in book with two photos with several years between them.
