Curious if anyone on the forum has a good knowledge or insight on the lengthy discography of Rapoon. Recently I had gotten a CD copy of Rapoon - Tin Of Drum and it's bit on the tribal side of experimentation and I thought it sounded a bit interesting and was curious to know what others think and what Rapoon albums might be worth looking into, as I'm not very familiar with Rapoon outside of this perticular album that I've got.

Most of his work has tribal sounds, one that doesn't, and which I would highly recommend, is Time Frost which is more ambient sounding.

Rapoon is one of those artists who are consistent but rarely produce a standout release

Interesting. I'll definitely look into the Time Frost album, thanks for the info in regards to the topic.

I have a few of his releases from here and there and wouldn't consider myself an expert on whether he has distinct "eras" of his massive output, but I've always enjoyed The Fires of the Borderlands, which was from the same period as Tin of Drum and has a lot of similarities, very engaging soundscapes that evoke feelings of sitting around a fire in the distant past. Interestingly, while you could call it "tribal," he does all on that album that with very minimal use of beats, which is atypical of a lot of his other work.

Have a look at the old Rapoon thread, there are a bunch of recommendations.

On a similar note, did anyone get the Robin Storey book put out by Soleilmoon? Seems to be a coffee table sized tome covering both his art (loads of pictures) and his life, including the formation of ZF. I'm considering ordering it but is held back a bit by the hefty price tag.

Well apparently you can get two copies for half the price with some promotion they're running. Might be your time to pull the trigger.

Neither I consider myself an expert on Rapoon, but I can second the recommendation for "The Fires of the Borderlands" - I've actually got Time Frost too, but I didn't find that one nearly as good as Fires of the Borderlands, but actually quite boring.

I did see that offer which is sweet indeed. Still, when factoring in shipping it adds up to 150+ $$. If anyone in or around Stockholm would be up for splitting the cost, feel free to get in touch.

What Do You Suppose is great if you are looking to (mostly) escape that tribal vibe and go for straight ambient.
Dead Door Unit
French Market Press
etc.

I quite liked Time Frost. Nothing tribal on that one, but a nice, cold atmosphere. On the other hand, now I got Zoharum's 3CD re-release of the debut album Dream Circle for review, and it's Hell to listen to. Nothing but rather short tribal percussion loops repeated for way too long.
