i've been wanting to dig into scorn's discography, but am a little intimidated by the sheer breadth of it. anyone have any favorites?

big fan of mick !
logghi baroghi , greeting from birmigham and gyral are my persona favorites.
his side projects are also worth checking.

Evanescence (is the one from the early albums to have).  Greetings From Birmingham (on wax if you can find it as it's the only place to get the Surgeon rmx) and Stealth are my favourite albums.  Gravel Bed and In The Margins are also great.

The act matured well.  Really glad the sound turned on it's head the way it did.

(Lull and Fret are both rewarding, for me at least.)

I really like the early stuff with Nik Bullen on bass. I think Evanescence was the last one with him. Scorn started more "industrial", developed into a more beat driven dubby beast and with the departure of Bullen it turned into more beats and deep artificial bass. Still great though! I'm a big fan of dub and Evanescence is my favorite. Ellipsis with all the remixes of Evanescence (by Bill Laswell, Coil, Autechre, etc.) is a great one as well.

I think you say scorn could be split into two phases.

Everything before nic went into prison and left scorn . Mick went on to explored hip hop beats, jungle and dubstep..a million miles away from the earache years.

they hold ( or they did hold ) the Guinness world record for the longest single..ha

yeah... from what i've sampled, the discography seems all over the place...

thanks for all the recommendations. i'll start with these.

Like the others, Evanescence struck me as their benchmark.  Ellipsis and Gyral pretty much lost me, but I have a pretty low tolerance for anything dubby.   Totemplow - Applaud the Execution might be of interest to those liking Scorn.  They were sort of a low-grade version on the Manifold label.

I only buy vinyl, d00ds.

I like Evanescence a lot. The next few albums after that do very little for me. Awhile later Mick brought the project to the Hymen label and some of that stuff wasn't bad at all, though very different from the stuff I like best.

That Totemplow album is very underrated IMHO, never thought to compare it to Scorn though. Haven't pulled it out in awhile.

I'd probably say "Evanescence" would be the best one to start with, then perhaps "Colossus" or "Gyral".
