PHARMAKON

I wasn't big fan of most of earlier works. I do have most of the stuff, yet never really made that huge impact on me. However, name always pops up. Both more "regular underground media" as well as in noise scene.  For example from multiple rather sarcastic remarks found from Noise Widow about the bald bearded men in band shirts drooling over Pharmakon thinking its best noise out there, feels like perhaps the harsh noise tape scene ain't the realm where Pharmakon is most appreciated?

Indeed, it basically took me until getting physical vinyl LP copy of "Devour", to actually like the stuff. Not only the music is more in-your-face, but thanks to more grim mastercut of LP, compared to digital version of album, this sounds vastly more noisier and dirtier! I just happened to get 2nd hand copy of LP into my store, and decided to give it a spin.. and liked it. Based on previous album, I didn't feel like I am going to buy Devour, but I'm glad someone decided to sell away the used LP and I got it.

Perhaps being released by Sacred Bones, is one reason why these rarely make into "noise distributors"? Tesco has them, but out of places where I mostly buy things, never see it. Freak Animal never carried anything else than split 7" with Deterge.

Quote from: PharmakonIn the past, they were all recorded in studio, and usually each sound was recorded separately so that we could get the best mix and EQ and everything with each sound. But I got really sick of that process, because it felt really sterile, and I just wanted to try something new. I felt that it made the most sense to record it live, because the live aspect of Pharmakon has always been more satisfying to me than the recordings. I thought, why not just do the A side as though it was a live set, and do the B side as though it was a live set, and mimic the live experience by having a really loud PA, a subwoofer, in the room, and do the vocals live with the take, and just mic the amp, and stuff like that. And it worked out so well that I'm kicking myself for not doing it before. I can't believe it took me three albums to do this. It seems so clear to me now that this is the way I should've been doing it all along.

Clearly her own feeling has been similar. Previous material being too sterile, and now with the "Devour", especially on vinyl record, it does make material better, sound better and I guess even compositional aspect changes a bit.

After listening the Women Of Noise podcast, every episode till the very latest one (was it 16th), it has felt that... I better not comment on "female noise" anymore, haha. Jeeeeess.. But well, Pharmakon actually made me want to touch this hot topic that always benefits when blunt men comment on it. Maybe for some future SI paper magazine. In interview linked above, Pharmakon is very much, in good and bad the current age female artists. Coping mechanism, fairly traumatic experiences, some level of pain, personal experiences first and foremost. It would be curious to know, if the observation of her audience being the drooling hardcore & metal music bearded men forgets to mention how it may appeal to a lot of listeners who appreciate this personal female perspective? Like perhaps, other women, who may find material more personally relatable than band screaming about incidents within east european history?

Quote from: Pharmakonall the songs are about just getting as fucked up as you can and forgetting everything. I think it's something that's really a national, generational issue, for most people my age.

Pharmakon thoughts, experiences? Gigs? Best albums?

I've been a fan of all of her recordings, but I agree in that Devour might be my favorite of hers. I have seen her live a couple of times, and those performances are what made me want to check out the rest of her material. I'm sure a lot of people have never bothered to listen to her stuff due to the more "mainstream" exposure, but I'd recommend anyone to go see her live show if you get the chance.

I enjoyed the early material as well her interviews discussing coping and illness, which is a topic I have a soft spot for.
Then the immediate following works didn't work much for me until Devour, that has been in heavy rotation.

I don't consider women noise interesting, there is good noise and bad noise. And Pharmakon is surely good noise. (said by an aging fat bearded man who fits the mentioned stereotype minues the drool ah ah)

would be very interesting to read a dialogue between you and her.

Re:Pharmakon
I like everything since the first time I noticed her work, in fact it was the mentioned 7" with Deterge, ordered from FA quite some years ago.
Saw her performing 3 times, if I remember right, two times solo on some "Art Festivals" and one time "warming up" for Swans.
Always amazing shows, but it was also funny, how she was perceived from the different audiences. Some were quite curious...but they have never seen or heard something like this and then just were happy when it was over. Others thought, they knew all about this and were somehow "relaxed",  but in the other second they got Margaret yelling directly into their faces, and then they immediately took a step back or even left the room, haha.
Sorry, my English may not be good enough for what I would like to describe.
But, anyway...and I have posted it also in another thread...those live actions from last year are great, and for me, better than anything before. Therefore looking forward for a new record!

I haven't loved her recorded works but that style rarely excites me - but I saw her live around the time of her first record and it was wonderful - in your face, visceral, really confrontational. A really great performance!

I've been a big fan of Pharmakon since the beginning. When I played her house The Red Light District back in... 2009? Her and her roommates (The Halflings, Yellow Tears, John Mannion, etc.) were very accommodating.

Top notch PE/industrial IMO. Seen her live countless times, shared bills with her, booked shows for her and she always delivers.

But my favorite set was actually a project she had with her then partner (one of the guys from Halflings) called THROAT. I've bugged her over the years for any recorded material she might have had from the project but she never came through with them. It sounded like their interpretation of Haus Arafna.

Im very thankful I got to witness a Throat set once and it might be my favorite live set I've seen of any of the Red Life District folks.

I only know the last one and I enjoyed it, quite heavy and "sharp"...never really cared to listen to something else, but I think I will do it sooner or later.

Saw her performing on Tuesday and it was amazing, so I have very high hopes for a possible great new record to come hopefully soon.

Re: Devour - it's the one I like most nowadays, but when I first put it on the record player, I thought that this one is unusually quiet and that I have to put the volume knob to spheres I don't do normally to get to enjoy the record.
Anyone else has any similar experience or is it just my record or record player?

I saw throat in Cambridge(Massachusettses USA) @ the starlab a long time ago. It was sexy and threatening and i remember thinking no one else is doing this.
I saw pharmakon in the basement of a drag bar in Boston a very very long time ago. She had two Casio sk8's. It was underwhelming. But years later I saw her in Allston with the raspberry bulbs and it was undeniably fierce.
