Current equivalents of Smell & Quim, Cock ESP, Crank Sturgeon,...

Was talking with one friend and he was expressing question, where are the current equivalents of Smell & Quim, Cock ESP, Crank Sturgeon, etc. First of all - not imitators of the bands. No trying to be like them, but in spirit.

His conclusion was that these days, so much of material is uniform with collage artworks, explicit or seemingly serious content. Symbols, tough guy "fuck hipsters" -type of thing. Leaning towards metal scene state of mind. And so on. Pure harsh noise or pure heavy electronics or raw ripping power electronics.

But what would be the odd, artistic, weird, yet noisy material out there - if any? Something that is not only bunch of local dorks with funny hats doing shitty noise. But to have sort of ambition and focus in their work nevertheless. Producing good material, and being unique without trying it too hard?

I personally, have never been huge fan of humor noise, yet Smell & Quim, Crank Sturgeon, Gerogerigegege, and so on, of course they go well beyond being just lazy slapstick on stage or jokes on tape. Including absurd, bizarre and strange elements to it. I didn't consider it any problem that there would not be so much amusing noise, but now that question was made to me, it made me think that it is probably true that there has been shift to darker and rougher in general?

When looking to Finland, indeed there are bands who I would not file under "dark side of noise". Keränen, Umpio, Tyhjiö, KSNK, Rotat, Salakapakka Sound System and such. They may not dress up, and sound of most of them is actually pretty much straight out harshness, so it's perhaps not exactly in the level my friend was asking for. But nevertheless, putting projects like Pain Nail and Rotat next to eachother, it is clear, that latter one looks and sounds amusing, bizarre, odd and wild, compared to stylish, cold and bleak industrial aesthetics of the former.

Perhaps more to the subject could be other bands who may not be so familiar for readers of board: I was visiting local noisy show, where Electric Hobo played. Sound he created, was no less of value compared to most big shots of Finnish industrial-noise, but the name of project and sort of stoner'ish "making cool sounds" type of atmosphere in it, made one think there will be probably zero people interested to check it out. Even if music itself, certainly would be good, but due mundane and down the earth arty feel, it may remain local curiosity. Same could be said about Joulupukki  (who does harsh noise dressed as santa claus, and from albums would probably make no sense) or Greatful Dad (who does noise with circuit bend toys). Grateful Dad is actually playing live quite a lot and has even LP out. It would be probably not as demented as Smell & Quim, yet still same kind of play-of-words based on mainstream music and goofing around yet succeeding to make actually good noise while doing so....

Mentioned Electric Hobo live. Not doing justice for the actual live sound, but something...

newest Yellow Tears would fit into this i feel. demented and strange sounds with VHS tape album adding truly bizarre visuals. worth looking into one of their side projects called Teeny Bopper. i enjoy the Double Face Perfector CS.

I'd say Filthy Turd falls somewhere between Smell & Quim and, say, Prick Decay in spirit. Lots of "fun" in his approach, but at the same time I find him very clever and serious about his work. He's been active since god knows when, but the FT moniker isn't that old.

Reminds me a bit of Evil Moisture's newer label - Royal Sperm, but even this output reminds me more of the realm of Michigan weirdo noise.

Both of these yes. But especially Yellow Tears.
Their live shows (be them few and far between) are the most out there of anyone. For their 10 year anniversary the "show" consisted of a carnival-like day complete with audience participation and a 3-story hand built water slide. They turned their whole house into an amusement park. Next level

Cementimental for sure. I dare say large swathes of the noise world have probably had their willingness to be open eared coloured by his presence on various forums but for my money he has always made great harsh noise with a great sense of surrealism and fun and humour to it. Not just throwaway tosh.

Agree with Filthy Turd. I'd throw someone like Luke Poot/Lovely Honkey in the ring for consideration but his stuff is far from just noise.

I would agree that Yellow Tears (especially their later releases) fit into this idea perfectly. They haven't released anything in a while, apart from a very strange digital only compilation.

Yol. No silly costumes involved but a unique voice and personality with black humour in his words and the use of non-conventional objects for producing noise. Subtitles might be required for full comprehension - alternatively, just spend half a day visiting Hull to understand where he's coming from.

Seems like an interesting nut job. In his videos, there's one of him with a table in an empty room that has some good sounds and ranting. The 'Chicken' video makes me wonder why more noise artists are not making videos (tours of junk yards, abandoned sites, etc.).

See I don't really put Yol on this kind of list because I see what he does as way more serious and intense than the artists in the thread (in spite of the very obvious black humour of it all).  But none the less, I'm pleased he is being talked about cos he's one of the most interesting and singular guys going in the UK for my £££.

Yol does a lot of things that seem as though they should be obvious things to do but take a tremendous amount of guts and vision to actually pull off.  His various tapes and cdrs are very much worth your time too.

I think the project as well as the man himself are "dormant" at the moment, but I think Allen Mozek's No Intention project deserves a mention. Not everything is especially balls-out loud, quite a bit of it is more on the potentially-irritating arty side of things, but there's a clear humor in a non-dumbass sense. "Rabelais" is probably the best example, but the sample online doesn't do it justice - earlier parts on the A-side are straight out of the Incapacitants' playbook, and there's a B-side section that combines a field recording of birds with amp feedback in a way that just totally nails the vitality and harshness of noise without anything even remotely dark, taboo, tough, mysterious, etc.

Baglady

Rabelais is such an anomaly in the small but great discography of No Intention though. All the other NI works are very similar in their palette of sounds, arrangement etc, while Rabelais is wild and unpredictable, and gave hints of serious derailed mayhem to come. But I agree. I can definitely see him lined up for cavity search next to S&Q, Cock ESP and other elusive devils. I don't think he would be offended by the comparison in his video game exile now either. Quite the contrary...

Baglady

And then we have Andy Bolus and his (still active +  new) alter egos as well. Always taking his own routes, both audially and visually. Had I had a stable income, I would have bought each and every release on his fine label Royal Sperm. Bolus is also a fella I'd place somewhere in the midst of all this. One can catch wiffs of both Cock ESP and S&Q in his way of doing things (and the other way around), but his kinship with Macro, Prick Decay and other oddballs has him spread all over the map.

Read this line over a several few times and still can't quite parse it. (No please don't help.)

Thanks Duncan for the Cementimental mention, truly appreciated :)

Not to blow my own trumpet but the latest review of my other project Isn'tses seems relevant to this thread:

QuoteIt's satisfyingly hard to put Isn'tses into a box of any size: they're not harsh noise or power electronics, don't really resemble ambient or industrial. I'm sometimes put in mind of venerable or departed creators of noise-show spectacle – Jessica Rylan, Emil Beaulieau, even Smell & Quim – but McKendrick and Drage have at least that much claim to individuality.
