First of all, I never owned either of these synths, but I borrowed the Doepfer Dark Energy with sequencer from a friend. Enjoyed the quality, range and richness in sound to work from. I understand the II version have another chip than the first. Not sure if this have affected the quality of sound, but if not, I can wholeheartedly recommend that. Before purchasing a small mono synth I checked out the MFB Nanozwerg. Didn't like it too much. Think it sounded a bit thin. The last one I haven't heard of. Ended up with a Vermona Mono Launcet myself, was for a time considering the Moog Minitaur.

How is the Vermona Mono Launcet? I like the looks/size of it. Price is higher in the U.S. compared to the Mini-Brute which is the other synth I've had my eye on.

I am very happy w the Vermona. East German brand I believe. If I rememeber correctly I think I payed around $640,- a couple of years ago for it. There are two versions. One w midi output and one w jack, so it is possible to run instruments via the Vermona or use it by itself. Quite gritty and dirty sounding, but can be clean as well. The synth have quite a range in freq register. We are talking insanely low from ca. 0,05 Hz – 250 Hz. Have to mention, this might be more viewed as a bass synth, though I feel the mid/higher tones are quite high/clean. Never regretted this purchase. For peeps interested it is also possible to purchase modular extensions. As w all other small synth (and for that matter the minibrute) I recommend using some effects/pedal in addition to the synth. I usually have it jacked up to Korg Monotron delay, Pro-co rat pedal plus EHX holliest grail. That does the trick for now. Been looking at the minibrute myself a bit. Might go for it in the future, but I have to wait a bit for now. Check the link below for Vermona.
