Turntable noise

Was just listening BUSRATCH LP on RRR.  I was blown away by noisiness of their split CD with Hijokaidan and also managed to see one of their live sets in my trips to Japan some years ago. Killer stuff.

Forced Exposure says about LP:
Japanese turntable project probably best known for their work with Otomo Yoshihide and Hijokaidan. After numerous CDs, this is their 1st LP -- it also happens to be their final recording. The band has decided to part ways so the members can pursue new projects. Side 1 = two elegant contemporary avant garde compositions -- kinda reminds me of AMM if they were DJs. Side 2 = 99 lock grooves.

What I say about LP is that I'm kind of tired of locked groove records by now. So one side is just quickly skipping from one to another, without caring of missing one or few grooves. Actual music side is great. First I had been slightly disappointed that material is not really noise here. Not like Hijokaidan split. But also, this isn't "DJ music" by any means. It's making experimental music by playing destroyed records. Best full of crackles, pops, broken loops, reversed rotations, skipping grooves, but in the end it actually becomes oddly relaxing music involving malformed calm instruments mixing with noisiness of "analogue error".

Can't find any links to any works. Here is some collaboration stuff with Otomo Yoshihide, but I think all Busratch own works has been much better.

Recommendations? No music DJ's. Turntable noise!

Busratch LP is pretty great.
Some AMK perhaps?

Katsura Mouri from Busratch did a great collaborative CD with Time Olive on his 845 Audio, "Various Histories". In the improvised, electroacoustic vein, but sporting some heavy moments. http://845audio.org/catalog/

Alfredo Costa Monteiro's turntable work also comes to mind. Nyx on Entr'acte for instance:

Andrew McIntosh

Clinton Green, a friend and occasional collaborator, has been creating sounds with turntables for a few years now. He uses cheap and sometimes antique turntables, first using broken records to create looping sounds, then moved on to other objects on the turntables.

Part of an interview I did with him, also with live excerpts and with him demonstrating his technique at the time (changed a bit since then).

A video compilation called The Four Seasons, using natural elements and the weather. Much quieter and calmer, requiring deeper listening.

One of his albums online, featuring more use of vinyl (more of the "crackles, pops, broken loops, reversed rotations, skipping grooves" Mikko was asking for. And I agree, it can be very relaxing).
Shikata ga nai.

Katsura Mouri did what was easily my favourite set at the recent Multiple Tap event in London.  Very scuzzy, filthy sound emanating from the single turntable source through massive amps. Exactly what noise should be to my mind! Bought a busratch disc on the back of it which was very different but also excellent.

Hong Chulki is someone interesting working in this arena. Not heard much at all but seems to be within more of an improv vein. Fine by me. Very cool turntable feedback stuff. Done some stuff with Dilloway, tape on Hanson etc. Check out some vids.

Nomex too, from what I've heard. Great, disgusting explorations of contact mic and cheap, shit turntable. Brilliant.

shameless plug:

BURNTABLE tape i released some time ago. hong chulki & co from s.korea ripping it up big time on C-40. as usual, i was mega disorganized with promoting it, but i still have some copies, 5e +pp. shameless plug ends here.

hong chulki "with/without" 2xCDR is mega intense!! clear sound, total ripping up the needles for ca.45min. good luck findin it, i tried to get some extra copies from him for months without results..

that busratch lp on rrr is very recommended. no violent sound at all, more like very wierd strings/piano glitch ambient (?argh)

gotta love turntable abuse!!
