Audacity is free and easy to use, also Sony ACID pro is good, but for me Audacity is the one to go.

I was always into Sound Forge (6 and 8) - for mixing and editing.
and WaveLab 6 - for multitrack recordings.

i use wavosaur or audacity to edit sound and renoise a tracker for sequencving(some times i use the sample editor of renoise)
anyone has the same genre of workflow?
