Revisited Un-Kommuniti "Black Dwarf Wreckordings '83-'85" (4LP + 7", Vinyl-on-Demand)
I thought that during this year, I'll just have to go through all the VOD boxes that has been laying around, unplayed, for years. Picked up ClockDVA set, but noticed this box, and lure was just too much.

This box can be still bought (via discogs) for pretty decent price. I guess even cheaper than it was when it came out?! Several copies from 30 to 60 euro, while items like Broken Flag box are double the price!

First of all, what is crappy with this box is that it is most of all "best of Un-Kommuniti". Bands output is around 10-15 hours at least, which is most of all C-60 and C-90 tapes. So there isn't any full albums here. Merely LP long selections where almost each track is pulled out from different tape. Another is, that graphics of original tapes are brilliant. I can't really get why would be chosen to "improve" graphics with adding some colorful textures and treat typography with infamous photoshop glow effect.... fuck... Leaving graphics as-it-was would have done perfect justice for material. Black & white, straight forward hand made lay-outs. Couldn't be better.

Then positive side is that it was about time that something is available! Each LP flow works very very well, despite being compilations. They do flow greatly and present various sides of Unkommuniti enough. There is the ultra ripping power electronics in finest tradition of Ramleh/SJ type. There is rhythmic industrial pieces, which are sometimes mechanical, sometimes Test Dept type manual percussions. Extensive use of delay as vocal effect.

Packaging in box, with couple inserts including reprint from ALAP magazine and original graphics / catalogues etc.  A lot of Un-Kommuniti stuff is just about "as good as it gets" when talking about raw 80's industrial-noise tape material. Therefore it's too bad that there has not been some CD reissues of complete tapes. Sometimes simple and effective what would evade all the trappings of "collectors items", "revisioned & improved", etc. In world where amount of crap floating around is so big, and so much reissues are being done from "big names", one would hope that material what may not be the household name, but simply good stuff  would get little more attention.

After 4 LP's worth of band, it's not always that one is instantly in hunger for more. In this case, I just am. There is so much of different kind of stuff, and so great hands-on approach to making sound, I'll just conclude for those who may have hesitated, that despite flaws (matter of taste), box is worth to grab!

That must be said, that VOD box sound is very good. Few tracks someone uploaded from tape to youtube seems way inferior of master tape to LP....
Therefore reminder is that youtube links are for general reference only.

Did you pick up a copy of the Alien Brains box too? Very similar in sound & approach.
