May have written in this topic before. Indeed Kent State was well drawn, most professional of him, but kind of boring compared to all the other books. I understand if the topic would interest as historical thing it could be much better?
Trashed probably is the best, but
Punk Rock and Trailer Parks is right there.
Recently bought several things, but not sure if Finnish comics are interesting subject here? Anyways, these days small press publishing is so different from what it was 90's, 00's, even 10's. Nowadays pretty much every bookstore in Finland is worthless. There barely is comic stores. Over here, commercial and alternative comics not in any different situation. Both are very very marginal. Basically you get pretty good overview of EVERYTHING in alternative comics if you just check out once a year what was done. New Jyrki Nissinen. Maybe not his best, but still very good. It has such a great moment related to Arvo Pärt as well as E.Neubauten, that if experimental sound gets mentioned in comics, its good alone.
Anne Streng is 70 year old outsider-artist lady from Finland. His brother was quite famous progressive music guy and sister quite high profile naivist painter. Anne's stories are often kind of anti-urban fantasy realm, but the style of drawing is so unique. Very little published work, but little by little things since 80's and her drawing style sometimes brings in mind technically less refined Eric Stonefelt.
It took me time to get into Juliana Hyrri's style. Kind of naivistic plus more from painter background than traditional comics. Very much the "contemporary female comics" style, but for some reason the latest book appealed and now I have been trying to check out my shelves do I have the former ones or don't it? I got so much books that couple of spines will easily disappear in shelves.
I purchased the life-story of Lev Theremin, but didn't read that yet. Kivi Larmola used to be one of the true heroes of Finnish art comics. Very influential. During decades of working professionally in this field of creation, he may be still good, but the spirit of his 80's zine comics is no longer there. Kivi Larmola's Theremin book is also in english. It could be interesting also from perspective of experimental electronic music.
