Whats the current Japanese noise scene look like? Are there many shows, labels, artists? I am completely unaware, and I may find myself over there at some point next year. Would be great to check some stuff out. Particularly labels that I can deep dive.

Not really that current anymore, probably like a decade old now, but felt like a newer artist at that time to me, if you can consider the time frame some what current in a sense, but not sure if he's still active anymore or not, but Yasuhito Fujinami. His work is quite nice and felt like he was one of the more interesting artists to emerge from Japan of the more recent era.

Thanks! Listening through "lotus" now and it is quite good. really somber stuff. seems the label that released it - SSSM is based in Nagoya and has some more recent releases from other artists as well.

I found another label - dotsmark - that has some interesting stuff. Notably Kazuma Kubota and Uncivilized Girls Memory. Plenty of stuff to check out from both labels now and it seems promising to be pretty good!

Glad you enjoyed some of the stuff by Yasuhito Fujinami. He's also collaborated with German PE noise master Scatmother on a project called Entartun, which is quite amazing and amongst one of my very own favorite collaboration type albums. That one I highly recommend checking out!

Merzbow is still going strong!

Indeed he is, I've always been more partial to Contagious Orgasm, despite his more experimental and more ambient approaches in the latter half. Merzbow never fails to deliver though! This is true! 👍

That's a project I have only half-heartedly looked into (unlike Merzbow, which I love).  Any recommendations on places to begin?

Hakaristi

Linekraft and Scum would probably be the most current active projects I'm aware of. Advaita Records as well.

Negative Climax have a great tape on Dotsmark, excellent female-fronted PE. Although now defunct.

Yes, I highly recommend Linekraft and Scum too.

If you are on Instagram, I highly recommend following a fellow who goes by the tag tonocha2591.

He seems to go to many of the noise shows in Japan and often posts videos of each artist who performs. It should give you a good survey of the current scene.

Veterans like Incapacitants and Government Alpha still perform as well as more modern artists like scum, Wolf Creek, Spore Spawn, Skin Job, and more.

Stipsi

There was a guy that disappeared from scene after he released a few tapes and some cds.
Yasuhito Fujinami.
Highly recommended.
I think he still has the bandcamp page if you want to take a spin
North Central
Mademoiselle Bistouri
Cytokine Storm
Fistfun
Bleeding Cosmos
Daddy's Entertainment.
PERVERT AND PROUD.

Entartun - S/T CD, collaboration project with one half being Yasuhito Fujinami. Really good and overlooked CD.

He has been inactive for the last 6 years though which is a shame because what I've heard was quite good. I've also heard a long collaboration track he did with Luke Holland (if I'm not mistake it was the same guy) that was great, but no idea whether that will ever be heard by anyone else at this point as it was years ago.

Contagious Orgasm - Confession Of Mannequin is quite great, definitely sounds more industrial sounding more so than what he does today, a lot of the earlier Contagious Orgasm stuff has a really experimental industrial sound amongst other strange sounds too and a lot of those early outputs were re-released on CD by Industrial Recollections. I believe they are out of print now, but I'm sure you can hear them somewhere. For Hiroshi's more ambient experimental side, I'd say a good one to check out is The Flow Of Sound Without Parameter, that was part of that Ground Fault Recordings series and in my opinion it was the best one out that series and it has a really great ambient atmosphere throughout it. A lot Hiroshi's later stuff gets a lot more ambient, even more so maybe that The Flow Of Sound Without Parameter. Contagious Orgasm is certainly a unique project that truly deserves a lot more praise.
