Sissy Spacek - Geometric Reason (2026)
CD

Geometric Reason is the new Sissy Spacek album released on SSSM (the legendary label headed by Contagious Orgasm) featuring Sissy Spacek in a somewhat bigger band line up which headed by John Wiese and Charlie Mumma also features Mitchell Brown (Gasp, LAFMS), Aaron Hemphill (Nonpareils, Liars), and Jay Randall (Agoraphobic Nosebleed). Released on CD in a cardboard sleeve featuring signature immersive and abstract artwork by John Wiese and containing three long-form pieces Geometric Reason finds Sissy Spacek moving in exciting new territories of musique concrète and Noise. Not to be missed!

Track by track analysis

01 Glory, Splendor, Wealth, Rank

Glory, Splendor, Wealth Rank kicks off with a mysterious thriller like ambience made out of synth drone, glassy resonances and various swirling distorted effects. Electric buzzing and various mechanical sounds soon enter the scene as well. Eventually barrages of garbled screechy metal object noise swirl around the stereo image. Eerie time stretched voice samples add a great new layer of sonic mystery I didn't yet hear in Sissy Spacek so far. The piece feels both mysterious and also quite psychedelic in a way. It's not full on harsh but rather brooding musique concrète of the most immersive kind. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the lovely contrast between the aforementioned metallic textures with gritty distorted scratches and warm low end hum, a rich sonic tapestry is slowly being unfolded within this piece, captivating with every second. Eventually improvised distorted and saturated drums enter the scene for a moment adding some great variation to the already rich composition of textures within this piece. The piece of this piece is also rather laid-back, letting layers play out slowly rather than quickly cutting between sounds in an intense manner. Ghostly and eerie metallic drones eventually enter the image near the end of the piece forming somewhat of a melodic and highly intriguing nocturnal ambience. Something is lurking in the distance, nothing is sure now, unpredictable events might happen. Indeed soon we seem to get enveloped in the belly of an industrial monster that is grabbing us with its steel ladder arms.

02 Another Place

Another Place starts off in somewhat similar territory to Glory, Splendor, Wealth, Rank with the familiar drone based dark ambience returning but the ghostly swirls are back more intensely in this piece and right off the bat the piece sounds even more Dark Ambient like. There's a great density to the effect these sounds have on the mind, gripping your thoughts, massaging your ears with crackling, piercing noises and flying around your head like a cloud of made up memories. The manner in which especially the rhythmic tumbling textures are created is superb, there's a lot of movement in them and a great tactile quality to the sounds themselves. Soon however more piercing sounds enter, really drilling into your brain, in a good way though. With louder climaxes Another Place takes up the dynamics a notch and is more hard hitting, forming a great second chapter of this album. Additionally this piece also features more fluid, morphing like metallic textures, like shapeshifting molten metal scrunching around the stereo image. Eerie bleeps and tones furthermore shape the piece into an alien kind of sonic tapestry which is soon interrupted by loud bangs of noise and intense bell like ringing. Metallic resonances are further utilised very well in the finale of this piece with some lovely shifting vibrations with subtle distortion being used fading in and out after which harsher streams of sound erupt. Once again, plenty of movement in this piece and the final seconds have lovely Dark Ambient edge to them.

03 Frozen Extent

Frozen Extent picks up from the finale from Another Place in a way with its intensely piercing metallic textures and the now familiar eerie voice samples now being cranked up more into wildly strange manners. I now even seemed to notice what sounded like violin entering the mixture which is swirling into a whirlwind of awesome abstraction. Frozen Extent also actually feels more mechanical in a sense with more machinery like noises entering the scene soon enough and as manipulated as these textures are, many of them are grounded in real machinery sounds but just more alien sounding. The tonal elements in the piece have an almost jazzy free-flowing vibe to them but the noise bursts still cut through hard enough for the piece never to feel simply idle. The straight up Noise sections are also very well done featuring enough movement and inspired panning to sound fresh every time you listen to this album. Nothing is predictable or repetitive as the vibrant unit that Sissy Spacek is keeps moving forward, second by second. Just look out for that sudden Industrial Noisecore section that pops up suddenly, no vocals but the pummelling drums hit hard into the Industrial ambience, lovely. I love the FM / ring modulated manipulations too. Wild pitch and glitch manipulations enter the setting too, adding a different approach to the piece which features exciting in its sonic and high tempo rhythmic qualities. Drones finally seem to play strange eerie chords, perhaps matching a strange old thriller film which has since been degraded by time.

Helicopter

Sissy Spacek - Disfathom (2025)
2 x 7" + CD

Overall analysis

Disfathom was Sissy Spacek's first Noisecore / Grindcore full length release in 2016 and has in this 2025 version been reissued as a double 7" + CD package featuring the album on 2 formats. The packaging consists of lovely dark coloured collage artwork and design by John Wiese printed on dense sheets of paper with the 7" vinyl records and CD included in separate paper sleeves. A Helicopter catalogue and download codes are included as well. Disfathom's 18 tracks (including bonus tracks) blast forward right off the bat with Sissy Spacek in this case being the duo unit consisting of Charlie Mumma on Drums and Vocals and John Wiese manning the bass and (Noise) electronics roles. Over the 18 hyper compact tracks on this album the duo hits hards, grips you at the throat with intense Noise mayhem blending saturated blast beats, growling alien vocals with quite melodic and rhythmic bass lines and John Wiese's signature wildly varied and in this case at times screechy Noise. With plenty of change ups throughout the album always feel as fresh as it is energetic and every element receives its own focus throughout the album as you rock out over just about 9 minutes and instantly want to put on the 7" record or CD again. Instantly replayable and not to be missed, Disfathom by Sissy Spacek!

Sissy Spacek - Reversed Normalization (2024)

12" picture disc

Reversed Normalization is in this version a reissue on 12" vinyl of the 2016 CD album by Sissy Spacek featuring three long-form tracks spread over the two sides of the vinyl record and it features beautiful artwork by John Wiese on side A whilst the track list is found on the B-side. On this album Sissy Spacek is a bit of a rotating cast of musicians with Chris Goudreau on electronics and John Wiese on bass and electronics featuring on all tracks whilst Mike Du Bose does vocals on tracks A1 and B and Charlie Mumma works the drums and vocals on A1 and Jay Randall joins on electronics and vocals on A2. Reversed Normalization is a curious Sissy Spacek record as it expands the bands often short form Noisecore approach into longer form journeys of intense, at times cut up Noise that is highly varied in movement, rhythms and subtle inherent details but on the B-side also moves into mysterious dark ambiences not often heard from this approach of the project. The always inspiring energy, advanced sound play and abstraction on this release is a wonderful delivery of virtuoso underground sonics that with its unique unexpected approach is a joy to play over and over. Let's dive into the three pieces below:

Track by track analysis

A.

Facial Corset

Facial Corset starts off with recognisable Sissy Spacek Noisecore blast but with some great panning effects. The long-form piece blends multiple bursts of Noise which are panned nicely between the two speakers and pummel away in wide manners. Absolute mayhem. What I especially like is how the harsh vocals, wild drumming and Noise blend together in screechy streams of sound that blast the transients of the drums into a whirlpool of metallic sound, sounding squishy and like the drums are a Noise generator themselves. Awesome! This is a really relentless onslaught of Noise, It just keeps on going with only the short stops when the drums separate in short bursts into the left and right stereo channel creating short breaks.

Dysphasiac

Dysphasiac changes things up as a collage of highly murky grinding Noise that retains similar ingredients minus the vocals and many different variations of garbled messy dirt are being thrown around here. Regardless, shrapnel of bass melody and drum rhythms can be heard but overall it's an awesome form of cut-up harsh Noisecore. It's like sonic equivalent of John Wiese's black and white collage artwork, surreal, gritty and very much DIY. A swirling, living mass of liquid sonics. Like monsters made out of diffuse distorted sound. The low end on this piece is thick and engine like, love the rumbles inside this piece. The manipulations of sound are so advanced sounding, it's almost like analogue glitch at times. You can really let yourself be totally enveloped in this awesome sound.

B.

Weeping Appearance

Weeping Appearance starts off in a more mysterious manner with a mixture of cave like Dark Ambient atmospheres, gritty vocals and more subtle but still highly saturated Noise electronics. This is like a ghostly ritual, a really interesting mixture of gritty textures and vocals with trippy swirling electronics. The swirling electronics eventually start to feel somewhat like tones, like an eerie distant melody with the Noise layers sounding like living malfunctioning equipment that keeps dancing around a ritual fire. I love the brooding ambience in this piece. The finale of this piece also nicely focuses on the awesome immersive metallic Dark Ambient textures, super nocturnal material.

Attila Csihar / Balázs Pándi / John Wiese - Annihilation of Samsara (2026)

CD album

Album teaser text

Attila Csihar, Balázs Pándi and John Wiese collaborate on Annihilation of Samsara which promises to be a wild ride of various influences mixing with each other on a single release. Attila Csihar is a prominent figure in the experimental Metal scene, which includes him joining Drone Metal band Sunn O))) on tour but his solo works featuring an experimental and highly inspired style of ritualistic music are well worth listening to as well. Balázs Pándi is an experimental musician and drummer who collaborated with many different artists, including Merzbow on multiple occasions both live and recorded and his free-form style of drumming lends itself perfectly to the ever mutating approach of this field, turning drums into sound sculptures but also not being afraid to utilise familiar Rock drum rhythms as well for contrast. John Wieśe is of course known for his long-running Sissy Spacek project and his solo works and creates many different approaches of Noise and musique concrete that is abstract, playful, psychedelic and always rich in texture and captivating composition. Together the trio blend their approaches together on Annihilation of Samsara to create something bigger than the sum of each artist' approach combined, a new synthesis of sounds and ideas forming something unique that promises to immerse your mind in adventurous imagery and vibrant sonic colours. This CD comes in a digipak with gorgeous design by John Wiese as always.
