I think the real question, then, is figuring out how his veganism fits with the earlier porn/trash themes.  A lot of people act like the embrace of straight-edge marked a gap in the project's thematics (and Akita's own insistence that it did only complicates this), but I suspect that there is more similarity than difference at bottom---and that part of the key for figuring that out is revealed through the way he has no problem with AI.

Speculating (I haven't spent much time analyzing Merzbow), but Merzbow seemed like an extension of Masami Akita first and foremost. Many other artists limit the scope of their projects more. If one expects the more limited scope from Merzbow and sees him departing from it, this could be seen as a "gap." Whether or not Masami Akita is sharply aware of the relationship of this aspect regarding the vegan/porn themes and the whole project wouldn't change much, I think.

At the same time, however, his revisionist tendencies with album reissues (removing his ex-wife's contributions, for instance) certainly make it seem much more personal.

After all this time, though, it might just be too complicated to try and parse this at all.

I'll take a look around to see if I can find it---it might have been the Japanoise book, but I am not certain.

He certainly seems serious, and he has seemed to be so since the beginning.  The earliest interviews/comments by him I have read are in the Merzbook, and he speaks almost like an academic!
