Out now:
Violent Shogun - Diplomacy LP
First full-length solo vinyl release from Violent Shogun, following several years of consistently exceptional releases under a variety of monikers, including Violent Shogun, Hattifnattar, Cryptofascisme and (in collaboration with Finland's arch Luddite, H.Ö.H) Mold.
Those who have been following the Violent Shogun trajectory will recognise much of the sonic territory explored on Diplomacy: texturally rich tape loops, broken electronics, atmospheric synths, and the rattle, crash and scrape of junk metal. However, one of the project's defining characteristics has been its ability to conjure a distinctly individual atmosphere with each release. Diplomacy is no exception.
A sustained sense of unresolved tension runs throughout the LP. At times harsh and abrasive, yet equally often beautifully understated, it promises a catharsis that ultimately never arrives. It is a sound born of frustration on both a micro (personal) and macro (geopolitical) level: an interplay of aggression, beauty and disquiet that is deeply moving.
Mastered by Pentti Dassum.
Artwork by Rémi and Rory O'Brien.
