First noise show of the year? Took long enough! Well, I went and caught Bastard Noise & Viodre last night. The trek to New York is a slog sometimes, but it was worth it for this.
I think I've seen Viodre 5-8 times in the last year alone. Each time has been pretty great, but last night really took me for a loop. Curtains open, visuals play, band begins slow. But wait, where's Bryan? Gear is set up, but he is nowhere to be found. Does he know they're on? Did he freak out and leave last second? What's the deal?
Suddenly, as the band continues to build, vocals can be heard. Now I'm like "what the fuck? He's gotta be here!" Suddenly I notice -- Bryan walking through the crowd with a HUGE megaphone! HAH. Awesome. He's grinning ear to ear. He approaches the stage. The slowly spoken vocals now turn to labored yells. Oh yeah, here it is; the explosion. LOVELY. Great set from these guys. Apparently it will be the last fort a while. Good thing I managed to catch it.
Bastard Noise... Wood... The immense feelings I have this project are ones that I do not shy away from. Love the man's vision, and knew I had to catch what seemingly will be their finally NYC performance. Right as Wood finishes testing sound, he tells the sound person "turn it up as loud as you can, lady." Oh yeah. Ears will be screaming tomorrow.
For the next 40 minutes or so, the crowd is treated to some of the nastiest synth work I have heard come from Bastard Noise. By god, I cannot believe the sounds that Wood can achieve with Trogotronics. I own a few, and they do some cool things, but nothing like he does. Pure wizardry there!
Vocals were really not as powerful as previous performance I had seen, but I mean... the dude is 70 years old. I don't mind if his screams are lacking a bit. Hah. Fuck man, I still raised my fist when "eternal war against the dicks is all we can respect!!!!" came up! Skull forever.
Great time overall. First NYC trip out of three for the month... ugh.
