Staalplaat in Berlin has not been mentioned yet. It seems like the inventory doesn't get updated all that much but plenty of great stuff there. Haven't visited in few years, though. I think they are somewhere in the Neukölln district nowadays.

-Kyoto
--Meditation Records - large selection of ethnic music, drone, psychedelic, minimal techno. Basically all things mellow and psychedelic. I'm not sure of its newest location but when I lived there it was in a gorgeous part of Kyoto, tucked away between homes.
--Avis Records - near Shijo and Kawaramachi in the Teramachi (covered shopping alley area) - awesome, awesome selection of Japanese hardcore and metal with lots of great imports there. I bought stuff ranging from Hellchild to Deathspell Omega to SWARRRM. And reasonable prices too!
--Cafe Independent - there's a record shop in the cafe that has some noise, jazz, classical etc. Pricey as hell generally.

-Osaka
--Timebomb Records - huge selection of stuff but you can find some great obscure things tucked away in the shelves.
--Grave Records - owned by Chew of Corrupted. Nice selection of metal, hardcore, noise with good art books too.

USA
-San Francisco
--Amoeba Music - inside what used to be a bowling alley, the selection is huge and always changing. You can find some good second hand experimental records from time to time.

Saturday 23rd June will be the final day of the Highgate shop. There are a multitude of reasons why I have decided to close but in summary: 1) I have a lot of things I want to do outside of the shop and cannot justify the time spent here; 2) The majority of customers now reserve records via phone/email and simply collect, and although this is not a problem in itself, the role of running Second Layer Records as a public shop with set opening hours seems increasingly redundant to me.

I've been blessed with unbelievably cheap rent that has enabled me to survive but that is no reason to stay when your enthusiasm is waning. I have to be enjoying myself to do this – there is no point otherwise – so it now feels right to move on and use the time for other things.

I want to say a big thanks to everyone who has supported the shop over the years. I've had a lot of fun and I've met some really great people that will not be forgotten.

Very sad news indeed, it was by far the best record shop I've ever been in.

I'm in Montreal this week, and have to say Cheap Thrills is an excellent record store with both new and used vinyl & CD. Quite a lot of used tapes too, mostly metal though. Bought stuff by MB and Troum. Went to Atom Heart as well, but it was closed for the day unfortunately.

Anyone got any recommendations for Russia? I'll be in Moscow and St. Petersburg from Aug 7-27 so I'm hoping to hit a few shops.

I recall one Moscow dealer told me one shop that sold lots of noise CD's is no longer there. Not saying there isn't any shops where noise could be found, but I assume that can be the case?
