Books about noise/experimental music

Although looks interesting I am almost sure that if I read it I will understand nothing, haha. Part my bad English, part my ignorance, big part of what it is , as it is stated : "This book aims to introduce the visual and aesthetic elements of industrial culture to a general history of contemporary art by analysing ..." . Book's purpose, I don't care at all.

Also is author having a genuine interest in industrial or was it just a task / research / job ?

Interested to read reviews too, by fans, not 'art' guys.

Although the book is based on research and interviews done for his PhD dissertation in Art History, I wouldn't say he's a tourist defecting from academia. He's curating exhibitions at Centre Pompidou (one on the NYC No Wave scene recently), he has edited books on GP-O and SRL, and performs with Cent Ans De Solitude. In the video interview he mentioned going to the Wroclaw industrial festival. So yes, his credentials are real.

A lot of reviews (of releases and gigs), interviews etc. mainly with old school industrial / experimental artists but also neofolk, some modern (ish) bands etc. Some content appears to be as old as from 80s/90s I think, but there are recent updates as well. Not easy to navigate because I guess design hasn't been updated in over 20 years and e.g. reviews are ordered alphabetically rather than chronologically but content is top notch. Apparently there was also a zine with three volumes - not sure when exactly but given volume one features Jhon Balance, it was quite some time ago...

The 'zine ran in the early to mid '90s for, as you say, three issues. Featured the likes of Coil, Death in June, Whitehouse, Soil Invictus, Grey Area of Mute, Nine Inch Nails, Scorn, Blood Axis, Jim Thirwell, plus articles on other aspects of what would've been termed 'industrial culture' at the time. It was based in Scotland, A5, and definitely a neat little number.

Curious if anyone has read Ian Trowell's book 'Throbbing Gristle: An Endless Discontent', I am about a third of the way through it and will persevere as having read Simon Ford's book on them - and both GPO's and Cosi's autobiographies - I think it's got something different to say. Although the first section where he lays out his 'methodology' - mostly why another book on TG needs to be written - was a slog which may put people off, and the use of 'ornate' language : "they were coterminious with the first wave of British Punk... and the epiphenomenal emergence of Post-Punk", plus US English (when the author is British) kind of grate on me big time : "instances of cultural unease erupted like jets from a leaky faucet".

Sorry if these books are already mentioned and I missed it...

I really appreciate the two Death Squad - Collected Documentation books. They are lavishly produced. Michael Nine gives a very detailed and honest reading of life as an underground / Noise musician. Parts of the books are funny, sad, happy, harrowing, ... And a very excellent 6 CDs plus a DVD accompany the books.

There's a new MK9 book that I might pick up, largely based on what Michael did with these previous books.

I think of Michael as a multimedia guy. Music, tv, and these excellent books that I believe most Noiseheads would relish.

In the mid-1990s, four thick, annual issues of Ongaku Otaku magazine were published. Operating from San Francisco, California, the goal was to spread the word about the compelling independent music being produced in Japan. With dozens of interviews and articles, and many hundreds of reviews, the magazine was an influential voice, sharing words about Aube, Cornelius, Yamamoto Seiichi (Boredoms, Rovo, Omoide Hatoba), Shizuka, Jojo Hiroshige (Hijokaidan, Alchemy Records), Melt-Banana, Ruins, KK Null, and many more. This facsimile edition brings the original pages to readers several decades later.

Publisher and editor Mason Jones has run the Charnel Music label since 1988, and has recorded many albums solo, as Trance, and as a member of SubArachnoid Space, Numinous Eye, and Collision Stories. He began visiting Japan regularly in the early '90s and arranged U.S. shows for many Japanese artists. Ongaku Otaku was a labour of love, aided by many contributors to whom he remains grateful.
