A little bird told me about this, as they found it looking for an article I did on noise in 2012.
It's a master thesis for Victoria University of Wellington, and is 149 pages.
I've read 20 of them so far, and scrolled around.
I may read the whole thing.  It's very comprehensive and may stir some creativity or inspiration.
The focus is on "residual culture" basically, in that it encapsulates the use of technology by poor people to usurp pop culture, and to some degree usher in new "urban cultures".

There is a good amount of talk about odd releases with bizarre packaging.
A caterpillar that goes around trying to rip the wings off of butterflies is not a more dominant caterpillar, just a caterpillar that is looking for a bigger caterpillar to crush him.  Some caterpillars are mad that they will never grow to be butterflies.
