Is the level of quality pretty consistently high throughout? Thinking of the Skin Crime box as a point of reference...which is a pretty high bar, certainly (maybe one disk out of the 20 didn't grab me, and even that one had a few good tracks), but certainly don't want something with 30% amazing material/70% filler.

Worth picking up for sure. First seven or eight discs were excellent, but after that, there were some less hard hitting and more experimental stuff. It became better again towards the end. The sound was consistently rugged and tasty though. Skin Crime box is THE noise box, so I didn't expect this to be directly comparable.

Exactly like that. His discography is not all just Texas Chainsaw Dopefiend and the box very clearly shows this. There is a lot of harsh noise but also a few more experimental releases that have clearly been recorded while on (lots of?) drugs. It's a beautiful box, it contains plenty of very good harsh noise of which most would be pretty much impossible to get elsewhere so I'd say it is very much worth the money. Not as mind blowing as the Skin Crime box but if you use that as a minimum reference you will end up buying nothing else.

Listening to Disc XIII now - Depress/Regress Bag (Demo)

Every single Depress/Regress release in the box has been really solid to great.

This one is no different. One 55:35 track. Old school fill up a c60 style unending marathon noise. Kind of a swirling mass obfuscating an underbelly of metalwork, sweeping electronic textures, and occasional industrial loops. Harsh but not overtly and almost surreal/experimental and slightly psychedelic in some areas.

It makes me think of the scene in The Wizard of Oz when Dorothy's house gets picked up in the tornado, it's the height of her fever kicking off, she is hallucinating, and this kind of feels like a slightly malevolent fever dream. A tornado of sounds whipping around. There is a very present almost whooshing of sounds at the forefront of this one. Actually the kind of dark and gothic artwork throughout the release captures the sound on this one very well.

As the piece develops, there are more abrupt cuts where things shift and David adds some more crunch, adds and substracts different effects and sound sources. Overall though it's one mass congealing and swirling piece. A unique and fun listen!

Slave Labour box! God damn this 4xCD SET is good. If you live in USA, ordering from DADA DRUMMING should be cheap and easy. In Europe, you might need to make some inquiries.
I was just talking with friend about times when 4xCD was the major box. Think of metalvelodrome, neverending story of king of noise, k2 box, etc. 4xCD is the thing. Not album, not too massive. Slave Labour set played through in blink of an eye! More listenings only proved it has plenty to offer.
I am of course in favor of Gilden box in a way that its good it was done. I dont have it yet. I have this question of approach : is it archive or is it for listening?
4xCD is for listening!
I got several huge boxes consisting 10-50 CDS and I know for a fact, I aint pulling them out from shelves in a way I would do for release that is for LISTENING.

I've now listened to 16 discs of 18 and I think it's more of a listening box than an archival box, but this is a high-quality release of a previously under-represented artist that's now been properly documented.

It's not the Skin Crime or Incapacitants box, and what is? And not every release is Texas Chainsaw Dopefiend by any means.

Here are all of the releases that I think are more than worth your time and make the box worthwhile:

  • David Gilden - Total Headrush
  • David Gilden - Self Titled Private Tape (Disk III)
  • Sawgasm
  • Lingula - 4
  • Lingula - 4 Unused Mix
  • Depress / Regress - Rehearsal 5/15/98
  • Depress / Regress - Last Noise Tape
  • David Gilden - Mikadoroid Alternate Source
  • Depress / Regress - Bag (Demo)
  • Depress / Regress - Root Penetration
  • David Gilden - Depress-Regress
  • David Gilden - Magico-ritual

There are a few splits or more experimental releases in between these that are OK to good, but there are far more high-quality releases than not. For an artist who was previously lost to time despite a few reissues, it's wild that we have this much material now.

Jim did an absolutely incredible job restoring David's previously unknown catalog which was discussed and on most people's wish lists for two decades. Absolutely unfathomable that Jim pulled this off and made it available to the general public.

I saw posts on the board about this being worked on as early as 2018, and I'm sure it was even earlier than that. Thanks Jim!

At first look I was pleasantly surprised of Gilden box set's physical appearance. It looks more like some Mario Bava DVD-collection. I miss some comprehensive booklet as well.
Bought myself this as 'slightly damaged' for discounted price but I see no damages (unless you count protective shrink's few holes as a damage).

I 2nd that notion of being "Mario Bava" box in appearance. Very well described as such. I think that is a fitting description of the box, especially in regards to the appearance of it, definitely has that cult horror flick vibe about it.
