Title: Noise distributors 2013
Post by: FreakAnimalFinland on May 03, 2013, 09:28:17 PM
Talking with many guys about current situation in noise. Who and where are the "real" distributors of noise releases? Places where you don't only get couple random releases, but quite large selection of material? There used to be a lot of distributors. Almost every country would have someone selling decent selection. Now when I take a look in Sweden, certainly bands and labels yet... who distributes? One vinyl distro? Is that it?
In Finland, well, obviously Freak Animal, but smaller ones like Obscurex and Filth & Violence (who focuses mostly on his own, but also closely related items). Denmark? Norway?!  Russia?! Latvia? Estonia? Lithuania has Autarkeia and Terror. Poland? Germany has Tesco, Rumpsti Pumsti, Loki Foundation...  UK has Unrest, Cold Spring, Peripheral,... 2nd Layers still? more?  France... Nuit & Bruillard is still slowly operating. Metamkine? Who else? Italy has Old Europa Cafe, and several more.. Still a lot of european countries to mention..  USA..  RRR, Phage, Malignant and .. and.. Who's there anymore? Self Abuse doesn't appear very active, but still is there. Many others appear to have dropped whole distribution thing and focus on putting out releases. Japan has NEdS and Lust Vessel (for few selected titles).  And I'm thinking... Is this all?
Reminders who is out there, with distributions. Be no shy with direct links.
And to clarify: Not just distrolist of your own releases and two releases of your buddies, but DISTRIBUTORS!

I'll update the opening message with contact details etc...

Malignant.  He's become more varied, or at least held on to his interests and continued to trade/distro many of them.  I wish he'd branch out into more experimental areas again, like he did back in the early Audio Drudge days, but that might be more to do with those labels not interested in trading than with him unwilling to deal with them.

Tedium House has a relatively nice selection, too.

(are there any good neo-folk distros in the USA?)

Lets say that distributors who have mostly noise/noisy/industrial/expeirmental.
Not for example goth or metal or punk distro who has couple noisy records.
No EBM industrial distros who have couple of Genocide Organ on the side.

Best is to write short description what type of distro it is. You know, "wide selection of ambient CD's, not tapes, no vinyl, very little of noise" -type..   Or "neo folk / martial industrial label with some noise & pe too"

Didn't know Ars Macabre is still going! Bought some stuff from them back in 1998 or so..

I contacted them last year because I wanted to buy some records, but never heard back. So I'd guess they aren't going anymore and just have the website still up?

AUSTRIA: STEINKLANG.AT http://www.steinklang.at/shop/ (http://www.steinklang.at/shop/) - Their own productions are more Neo Folk/Ritual, but they distribute a good amout of PE and noise (a bunch of other avantgarde music styles too).

GERMANY: SKULLLINE http://www.skullline.de/catalog/index.php?osCsid=0ufkngb0dvr1nif2usad2vsrd2 (http://www.skullline.de/catalog/index.php?osCsid=0ufkngb0dvr1nif2usad2vsrd2) Label mostly focussed on selling totally overpriced CD-Rs, but due to the rather big noise section I guess it qualifies.

There is Beast of Prey in Poland. Though it's mostly ambient, neoclassical, but there is noise from +- famous labels. Mostly CDs, but there is some merchandise too. No tapes I think and I didn't see any vinyls too. Link: http://beastofprey.com/ (http://beastofprey.com/)

At least in my case they were very slow and I never received one of the items but great selection nevertheless.

I think Untergeschoss (from Finland) should also be listed.

Quite minimal selection but at least good stuff and all the releases are top notch!

Is White Centipede Noise still active? His blog hasn't been updated since summer '12. He carried quite a few titles. Maybe he is neglecting the blog; hope he hasn't ceased activity.

Is Fusetron still around? I know I've looked at his site but not sure how much noise he carries.

I did an order with WCN a month or two ago. He took a little bit to respond, and a couple of items listed on the site were out of stock, but he's still going.

Despite the odd diplomacy and humor ("they have everything!  but they only send you some things."), I'm going to take that as code for "Soundohm are ripoffs."  Unless I'm running into a bit of dementia, that's the only possible way to read your experience.  Fuck that.  Fuck them.

In my experience he's not a ripoff, he's "just" very disorganized (by his own admission). Granted, that doesn't matter if you don't get something you've paid for. But I would've thought he'd have sent that item separately that he didn't include (mentioned in a previous post)... Soundohm's  record in my case: forgetting to include items, including stuff again that I already got the last time, and even forgetting to send a package once. However, I keep ordering from him because I can withhold payment until I receive everything; he also has a huge selection (although there's little overlap with this forum's genres) and mainly because beyond a certain amount, he sends packages via free registered post worldwide. If I didn't have these reasons, I wouldn't bother, but as it is, for me it's worth ordering from him.

I think I should clear my post a little. I did in fact receive the item but it was defective and despite many promises, he didn't send me a replacement product. But then again, in the end it all comes down to pretty much same conclusion. I mean, even though I received the item, what can I do with it if I can't play it. On the bright side, I just recently ordered something from the label of who released the item and mentioned them about the defective product and they promised to include some extra into my order so now it's all good.
So, if you are willing to wait month or two and be lied at, then order from SoundOhm but if you think that's bs, then don't even bother. I think I had enough of them but in case they have something that I'm not able to find elsewhere, I would place an order.

I am pretty much a regular customer at Soundohm, but living in the same city I have the chance of going directly to his warehouse when making my purchases, so I have never experienced the kind of problems you guys are talking about. What I can say is that the guy running it is extremely kind and an overall good bloke, a very decent fellow, so I'm inclined to think that all his mistakes are done in good faith. He's just really un-organized as a person, I guess. A friend of mine who lives elsewhere and orders from him has also experienced hiccups like missing items etc., but the guy always straightened things out in the end. And yes, their selection is huge, the problem is that the catalogue on the website isn't updated in real time and that could be a pain sometimes.

No, but then nor do I know why US postage rates are so high. I recently sent a CD to America for 1.65 euros, but to get one from America, it would cost $11 - more than the price of the CD. Prohibitively expensive, I'd say.

I think Mikko's prices while ordering from Finland are really low. 2 euros everywhere in the world if I remember correctly? I doubt that could be called expensive.

27 dollars for two BU CDs is as cheap as it gets and if you consider the class of BU, 27$ is not nearly enough for two CDs.

I have had same CD prices since... about '95 ? Something like that. I recall they used to be 70mk, then when euro currency came, price was rounded up to 12 euro and that's what it has been ever since. Back in the day, for 12 euro you could buy quote a lot of things. Nowadays very little.

Something like 5usd metal CD's, is a distortion of prices created by labels like NWN and desperate ones trying to get rid of their dead stocks. A lot of releases cost more than 5usd to make per copy. (For those who have more than large bulk run pressing cost to think about)

I would guess FA is one of the cheapest of european industrial labels?

Metal CDs are mostly cheaper than Noise/Industrial in generell. The Sales are Common in Metal. 10%, 20% or 25% (even till 50%) to make Room for new Stuff. Not only NWN, Obscure Abhorrence, Funeral Industries, Eisenwald, Witching Hour have this. But same like Steinklang, Tesco or others, who lowers Prices from Deadstocks.
Title: Re: Noise distributors 2013
Post by: FreakAnimalFinland on May 10, 2013, 09:49:24 AM
I'd say dead stock discount prices hardly reflect what new CD's are generally worth. I don't have much of "dead stock", because I don't run label in attempt to move whole inventory over short period of time, but can have items in stock for 10 years without seeing much problem with it. Even if it sells 1 copy every 3 years, hah!
That is certainly gamble, if thinking "I'll get this cheaper later".
With some releases it may be useless to pay 20,- now when you get it 5 euro quite soon, but some releases have pressing size estimated to reflect real demand. Meaning, theoretically all new copies will be sold at regular retail price and when release is sold out, it depends pure on "market" whether it becomes sought after high priced item or regular 2nd hand item sold for fraction of the original value.

Overall CD price appears to be 10-16 euro range in European industrial labels. It mostly depends on country, it's tax levels and level of economy anyways. Finnish postage rates keep rising. I think next in about 1 month? Minor corrections, what will not affect prices to my customers (3 euro flat rate, any amount of CD's anywhere in world!), but always cumulating into my own bills..

That seems very reasonable if it's a combined price (you're complaining about a dollar difference on your upper limit?).  Given two CDs from American to anywhere else in the world would comprise at least $10-$11 postage, I just don't see the complaint.  When the Australian dollar was shit, I on occasion paid close to $50au for a CD (now equivalent to $53us - back then it was c. $25us) including postage.

Postage everywhere is expensive to overseas.  Finland seems more reasonable than most.

Just to let anyone know in London who is thinking about going to this shop - it's not very easy to find. It could be down to me being an idiot but I walked up and down the road a lot and couldn't see it anywhere.

I emailed the guy who runs it and he told me some more details I thought I should share -

"It is the door next to a closed blue shutters and a Thai restaurant from the other. The 143bus stop is outside of the shop as well.
The door is open, you walk a small corridor and it is on the right hand side."

Czech republic

Shitty situation here, althrough we have some devoted people who at least have some noise records in their distro's:

Epidemie Records

Lot of their own releases, neo-folk, doom metal, obscure electronics, however they made some approach in releasing interesting Hungarian stuff like Larhnakh or Kriegsfall - U. In their distro you may find Grunt, Bizzare Uproar, NTT, Theologian and some other selected P.E. or noise performers together with some releases of Malignant.

http://www.epidemie.cz

Ascarid Records and Mytina distribution

Somewhere between proffesional tape label nad D.I.Y. Ascarid records span their activities from Czech performers attached mainly to art schools, to raw black metal, DSBM drone to dark ambient artists. They offer also good services in tape production for reasonable money. Some of their tapes i would highly reccommend!

Swill Radio of course. Scott Faust does the best reviews in the world besides Angela Sawyer. No competition!

"There was a brief period, circa 1981-84, when there were a variety of artists, loosely grouped around the Whitehouse/NWW/Experimental scene, that were dead set on creating a new musical vocabulary that had nothing to do with music of the past. When was the last time that happened? The music of these explorers not only had 'nothing to do with rock and roll', it had nothing to do with jazz or folk or dance music or any other kind. These days this sort of 'sound art' is much more common, but those were the days when the doors were opened." - from his review of an MB reissue - I think that's exactly right - you can trace the inspirations to things as different as Alvin Lucier and Tangerine Dream but that era really was very unique.

Well, I guess I count as Norwegian distro now:

Not a very wide selection like it used to be, but it will improve.

I suppose isn't very polite to toot one's own horn, but I would like to add Tordon Ljud to the list of active noise distributors.

It was launched around a month ago for Swedes and is now ready to be launched to a wider audience. Perhaps you might find something that is to your liking.

Thanks for your attention.

I must say I enjoy seeing a lot of new distros being established off late. This is a healthy and important sign for the continuing development of extreme music/art and the production of physical releases. With no - or rare funding opportunities for artists, this activity have as much an economical factor on the "scene" as being a channel for distributing artistic expression. Support the artists, invest in their products. Keep up the good work everybody.

Do noise labels actively trade their releases? Forgive me for sounding absolutely clueless but most of the noise labels (with the exception of RRR) I've met seem to be ran be disorganized people that just exist to complain about how they can't get shit done.

I started releasing Noise, PE, Electronic, Ambient, industrial/whatever music through my label (which mostly has for years done black metal) and want to be able to distribute it amongst labels that actually cater to those audiences rather then the metal crossover crowd however everywhere I go is either a dead end.

In short I have the audacity to actually produce releases that aren't "limited to 5 copies packaged with random refuse" but have no idea where the hell to distribute it too/promote.
