Last week I recorded a live set for the Feast 7 noise stream. I feel the audio is worth sticking up on Bandcamp. It is free download/stream or pay what you like if you want it in your collection or wish to support my project.

The set was recorded fully live, no post edits or overdubs. Sounds are created from my home made instruments, noise synths and a bunch of pedals. It turned out to be quite a rhythmic / ritual set, around 15 minutes long, with noise washes and droning sounds accompanying the metallic percussive sounds. I had fun recording it.

The previous year at Kontti Festival 2016 I did an all live metal set, with what for me , was a lot of equipment. Aside from it very narrowly avoiding dying on it's arse before it had even started due to technical issues, I remembered some people who were there said it reminded them of Vivena afterwards.

I had been listening to a lot of Vivenza around that time, but hadn't intended for it to sound that way at all. I was planning what was essentially a stripped down version of Mania without the synths. It kind of went that way in the end once things built up, but not as i'd imagined.

One of the technical issues I had partly led to it sounding that way, and somehow it worked out. I'd never really had a crack at working with loops in that particular way before using a much colder approach with samplers and loopers or aiming for a cleaner sound, so I spent some time learning how to use bits of kit in different ways to how i'd used them before and gave it a go the following year.

I seem to remember having various loops I was triggering live across three different samplers, a looper pedal to re-process and store live loops, and a walkman that had a tape speed manipulation function, plus some effects. It became more an issue of live mixing rather than generating source sounds and manipulating them in a tactile manner. Not overly harsh but more experimental.

I kept it relatively short as I knew the sounds wouldn't necessarily be reflective of the atmosphere on a Friday night at Kontti.

Last week I released a new EP of sinister dismal sounds.  Repetition, field recordings, slowly eroding chaos and inspiration drawn from my local landscape and the centuries of human interaction that are layered upon it.
