Aphasia

LIFE

This was the old noise project by Adam Gadahn who later converted to Islam and became a high-level Al Qaeda operative, overseeing much of their propaganda output and video production. Gadahn was a key target in the war on terror for over a decade and was eventually killed in Pakistan by American forces in a 2015 drone strike.

I've long been familiar with his early involvement in the metal underground fandom but haven't managed to hear his noise project Aphasia, which released at least a couple cassettes in the mid-90s and was "in network" with the noise underground we all know.

The novelty factor is of course attractive but given what a unique life he led I'm curious what young Gadahn actually produced. It is the ultimate "noise" life -- noise as an idea that transcends involvement in this niche music and highlights unique and untethered individuality in the world itself. You collect records and make redundant albums with vague themes? Gadahn devotes himself to Allah, marries an Afghani woman, and becomes a leading figure in Al Qaeda, producing video content for Osama himself only to be killed by the American government in unending global warfare. Your noise life doesn't compare.

Did any of you old heads communicate with him and does anyone have access to his tapes?

Didn't communicate nor have the tapes, but I have some other E H I tapes, band that did split with Aphasia on same label. FDR Tapes was probably very very small print runs, just usual brand c-60's with hand written stickers + xerox j-card. Resembling more "demo tapes" than "pro-releases".

If just interested to hear, not purchase or get further details, you can listen Aphasia at least here. Says ripped from tape copy number 9, so like said, it is likely not many copies are circulating. My E H I tapes number are also less than 20.

Label and the bands, not perhaps "noise" per se, but sort of lo-fi experimental bedroom weirdo music. Cheap instruments, toys, tapes, whatever junk, but more leaning to weird impro than actual noise.
