It was on the news that Finnish post will suspended also sending gifts and documents, that are supposedly free.
This was because many airlines have refused to carry post to USA. At least in Finland, "customs" doesn't have the packages and letters, but they actually are at the warehouses of those deliverers. I would assume that in situation where there is no logistics to handle situation, warehouses will be cluttered with stuff and there won't be space for them.
In situation where you got endless amount of containers filled with boxes of stuff waiting for cleaning out, would be fairly optimistic idea that sending letter with a CD as a gift, would somehow travel through all that chaos. Hah..
15% tariff - no problem. We all here in Europe have ALWAYS paid taxes. VAT in Finland is among highest 25,5%. And that applies not only to commercial goods, but also to gifts over 45 euro value, and you pay 25,5% for value of gift AND shipping costs too.
Problem is lack of system. They don't have one, and its been told post can't even build one and there is not really system for it in US either.
At least UPS told they have system for both, sender paying tariffs or receiver paying them. Sending bigger boxes probably will become ok. Letter mail will remain interesting to see how it goes. I know some countries have already given up on it. I recall news that Denmark is ending letter mail this year, right?
