RURAL INDUSTRIAL

I don't exactly know, how or with what words I should start this topic. It just interests me very much, where it comes from, and who would consider his or her project as RURAL INDUSTRIAL.

I know of The Day of the Antler:Rural Industrial 2016 - 2020 CDs, all the Nuori Veri stuff. Recently the Näsiä:Purppurasuo CD was described as Rural Industrial. I also think of Heppkirjat LP.
The Rural Resistance Manifesto in SI #17 I also know about...

Is it a Finnish thing only?

I would also consider f.e. Nuclear Pig Shit as Rural Industrial. Any more examples?

Sorry for a bit confusing and unsorted post, but as said, can't describe it any better.

To put it clear - I very much like all the stuff I know that is called or calls itself Rural Industrial!
Great stuff, I immediately somehow felt deeply connected with it.

Daniel Menche's Field of Skin album always has a way of conjuring for me the feeling of old, abandoned farmhouses giving way to the relentless forces of nature over time. I'm not sure I'd consider the other works of his I have to be so evocative of a rural feeling myself, but I have heard him described as "rural noise" at times. Especially his early works, though, do have a way of evoking a sense of place far from the places that most humans gather.

Patrick O'Neil's Scar Crowe project always felt like this to me.
The soundtrack to walking through muddy, desolate, wilting fields on overcast autumn days. Very earthen and isolated sounds and atmospheres.

We've had a couple of people describe our music as having a rural tinge, and even one describing it as having a "Folk horror" atmosphere, though this might just be from us living and recording out in the countryside.

We have also played live 3 times in rural locations for some very 'special' occasions.

My personal vote though would be for Metgumbnerbone.

I feel that in order to label some artists expression as "rural industrial", one has to have either strong metaphysical leaning or meanincful connection to rural lifestyle, mindset or worldview in their art or the soundsources used are heavily connected to the "rurality". In Finnish scene, Nuori Veri, TDOTA, RMSS and Näsiä are most definitely in the "rural industrial" camp but also some Kjostad albums are strongly rooted in the camp.

For example i don't classify Commando 15 to be rural industrial even if my worldview and artwork are heavily influenced by the rural Finland of the past but my sonic expression is more heavily rooted in classic PE and industrial, using scrap metal and electronic soundsources associated with much more urban side of industrial expression.

I would consider "Sju Väglösa Mil IV" by Wagner Odegard as rural industrial (or maybe even rural death industrial). "Sju Vaglosa Mil" is four-part compilation of his mainly ambient/folk/dungeon synth stuff, but part IV are his death industrial / pe works. Analog, lo-fi, strong DIY vibe with a hint of melancholy (reminds me TDOTA works). Highly recommended stuff!

It trenches more into PE territory but Ottis In The Woods is another example of rural industrial in my eyes. Recorded in the deep south it brings an essence of what either serial killer or a Ted Kaczynski type would of made in years of isolation with the rural, slow, broken, bleak and borderline industrial sound. Almost like how it feels to have a body chopped up in a basement cellar fridge miles away from any form of civilization or the brooding feeling of tedious work into making the next mail bomb and writing a manifesto before shipping it out.

I'd second that notion too, that's kind of been my observation as well. Definitely feels like more of a "movement" rather than a specific sound.

Threatening Reflections - Mosquito Larve in the Birdbath on the Virtues Label definitely makes me think of Rural Industrial.
