You call that angry/frustrated/hateful.huh!

Huh, yeah, wow. Yes I would, but then again my friend summed it up pretty well for me, as to why you can't understand:

"...Of course he's not going to think its angry, that dude shits on himself. He's more mad then you could imagine."

No need to try to be rude. We just got different opinions whats hateful/angry etc. stuff.
Tell your friend he has been misleaded.. female excrement only.

One name I would like to add for this thread- CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErYafUrmHlw

Am I the only one here who doesn't come from a punk or HC background? Or for that matter struggles to give much of a shit about those genres.

Quote from: Si Clark on March 24, 2012, 01:19:16 AMI've never had any real interest in punk/hardcore stuff. I like punk influenced black metal bands like Bone Awl but that's about as far as it goes. I can listen to it I'm just not into it in any way.

Agreed. I've always held a dislike for punk (and fucking ska) because a) the music never made me feel anything aside from irritation and b) the people who were into punk while I was in junior high/high school were a bunch of spoiled rich kids who liked to play dress-up and act like crust punks. Pathetic. Kinda funny when you see a classmate with dirty dreadlocks wearing tattered rags covered in patches and spikes, but he's also wearing a wristwatch worth hundreds of dollars and drives a souped-up Japanese rice-grinder straight out of The Fast & The Furious.

My background is Smash Hits magazine, Top of the Pops and Radio 1...
Well same here really but I'm of an age when that stuff was filled with late wave punk like Cockney Rejects and UK Subs.

I know it's opening a tedious can of worms to even comment on RAC but I will say that the 'classic' Skrewdriver material (Hail The New Dawn etc) is really dull and badly produced music with remarkably tame lyrics. And I am almost certainly the only person on this board who has shared album space with Skrewdriver, http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Ugly-Truth-About-Blackpool-Volume-One/release/2222092

On the other hand a song like No Remorse's well out of order 'Oi Monkey' is unforgettable and I've sat around listening to that with people who have seriously anti-fascist tendencies who can't help but shake their heads and grin in grudging admiration at its wild offensiveness.

No-one has mentioned the Germs yet. The 'Lexicon Devil' Darby Crash biog is a great and very strange story and you'll never hear their music in the same way after reading that.

Some of what Andy Martin of the Apostles is doing nowadays with young Chinese and Vietnamese musicians in 'Unit' is quite astonishing but it's best classed as some kind of genuinely outsider music, not anything to do with punk.

FreakAnimalFinland

I recall mr. Blood Axis did the interview with Rahowa for Sounds magazine and mentioned RAC bands are typically the bands which are so bad, they would never get any deal from anyone if there wasn't the lyrics and artwork.
And it may be true, but... As it was made clear: there IS the lyrics and artwork. hah.

It is of course matter of taste, but I don't think you can find so utterly ape-like aggression in regular punk? It's like comparing streetfight with dancing. No groove, no neatness, no artistic value. Just fist in the face. Sometime lame drunken pub fight fist, sometimes ultimate fight fist. But fist nevertheless. You know that these guys are not musicians. They are not, and will not be. They are just knuckle draggers with instruments.

To me, something like Apostles, kind of hits the same spot as some of the RAC. Even if Apostles is gay skin anarcho experimental folk-punk (? eh), it's sheer "lets just do this" 4-tracker albums hits just like for example Skullhead albums. UK accent, hand drawn covers, out-of-order recording quality, musical skills close to nothing,....  PUNK!? Possibly. Just something out of the atmosphere of "musicians" or proper "artists".
I miss this clumsy pub rock influence in contemporary WP music. All that hate-metalcore nonsense and crappy metal is plain horrid. Especially repulsive is the level of the "offensiveness", where all these Grinded Nig type of bands appear to be... lost in senseless negro hating BS. Forgetting any real substance there could be. I mean, beyond simplistic offenses.

I think some of The Exploited's output is close to this. The comments in between songs on early live releases like "This is for all you guys who sniff glue", "This is for the birds with big tits" "Any you like Crass? Crass are a bunch of wankers, fuck anarchy and peace, anarchy and chaos!" Music variable but sometimes great, brutal and minimal. Their 2003 album 'Fuck The System' is worth a listen and very funny too - unintentionally.

Best story about Wattie I ever heard was when someone in his local pub said 'heard your new album, sounds more metal than punk' - Wattie headbutted the guy, left him in a pool of blood and said 'Is that punk enough for you?' - despite this I've also heard he can be a very nice guy. Just not too much going on in his brain except endless 'anarchy and chaos'.

Quote from: FreakAnimalFinland on March 24, 2012, 09:49:05 AMKakkahätä 77 - I think it's little shame the name of band is for many such turn off, but actually I find music and lyrics to have much more point than vast majority of punk happening anymore. 2nd LP has been rotated more than any contemporary punk in my household.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwcZFBEQwPU&feature=related

I find really hard to understand the hype around this band. Like the track linked, sounds just too sloppy and lazy all around. Kollaa Kestää, another classic Finnish punk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3YWEDrk7aQ) is among my favorites and it is definitely as sloppy and as lazy, so I don't know what is wrong with KH. Perhaps the distinctive playing and singing of mr. Bergman - no offence to the man himself, though.

I had the first demo tape of Kakkahätä, then they still sounded somewhat raw and rock'n roll.

Yet there seems to be another band sounding very much the same, hoh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecs6UQu_RWc&feature=related

edit: somehow almost all 77-punk done after the 70s sound either too street/skate-punk or way too sloppy. Where is the rocking stuff such as Ratsia or Pelle Miljoona 1980.

I'm not so involved in punk scene. I just buy & listen records. So I'm not so sure about what bands are hyped and what not. I would guess that Kakkahätä 77 appeal would be based on sound and themes of lyrics?  Riffs and melodies most certainly are so traditional, there is very little "new" in it, but if you compared it to naive soft Kollaa Kestää content, this is the 2010 substance abuse and nihilism and rough sonic quality as intent?

If you'd replace sound with clean studio production and add bright, loud and clear singing vocalist, it would probably be just the mall-punk...

A few of my favourites, old and (almost) new:

BAD RELIGION - we are only gonna die
I still like what they're doing nowadays, they're one of my fave bands ever, but this early track really sums it all up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFMmc85gDIw

THE RIP OFFS - cops
Always loved them. Simple, catchy, funny, lo-fi punk rock, and they were amazing live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNENB_Ao9J8

GUITAR WOLF - jet generation
Punk rock with a strong emphasis on the 'rock' side, but noisier than anyone else in their field... well, except maybe for The Mummies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d82ukYXj52U

DEAD BOYS - sonic reducer
Nothing else to say, really.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdu3EU6sbng

CRIME - hot wire my heart / baby you're so repulsive
These guys had it all... the tunes, the look, the 'fuck you' attitude, everything. Maybe my favourite among the earliest punk bands.

There's the old, neverending gossip source, hah.. The Exploited trying the tell they are not "nazi band" or "nazi punks" and tons of sites and gossip hungry punks offering evidence. Older guy in next city used to order B&H magazines from Exploited member who was running the business back then.

DEAD BOYS is good reference!
Of course I got to know band only after GNR made their cover song.. featuring finnish rock hero M.Monroe as backing vocalist. Bought few LP's after that.

BAD RELIGION

When BAD RELIGION mentioned this is what comes to my mind first  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pPL1g6MUGk&feature=related

Similarities are indeed huge. But then again, BR influenced lots of bands... even those that they may have not wanted to in the first place. They're not bad, though.
Anyway, to even the (political) balance a little bit, here's the best commie sXe band ever:

MANLIFTINGBANNER - still straight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC-E-rFAHFA

And anyone here besides me and Tiny Tove likes some good old youth crew stuff?

CHAIN OF STRENGTH -too deep until now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSlFGjKoB8M

UNIFORM CHOICE - screaming for change
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7jpeTJaqIg

And back to some punk...

ADOLESCENTS - no way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW1Oq2kQjHU

Shit, I could go on all day... so many great bands...

EDIT - I almost forgot this, used to listen to it every day about five or six times in a row some 20 years ago...

STALAG 13 - conditioned

I could never really get into the youth crew stuff. I especially hate the revival that's currently going on.

Does KILLING JOKE qualify as punk?

I'll rephrase that question, would any of you more punk savvy people here qualify KJ within the wider punk bracket?

Well, I'd say that the first KJ album is a lot of things, and punk is undoubtedly one of them.
But to consider Killing Joke a punk band, at least musically, is not doing them any justice.
