DO IT PIGGY STYLE
"Smell & Quim opening and closing the Deaf Forever festival."
Filmed by George Proctor.

***START***
For the attention of the attendees of The Termite Club alldayer.

This blog is directed towards all those who attended or more realistically attempted to attend the Termite Clubs "Deaf Forever" all day event held at the ***** **** ******* on monday the 28th of May.

Firstly a big apology to the punters and bands who wanted to be a part of this event which was unfotunately shut down. It is a huge shame that miscommunication between the venue and the promoter caused allot of people to waste a day (or more for those from accross seas). The reason for the shutting down of the event was a certain act called Smell & Quim.

Within 20 minutes of the doors being opened they decided it would be a good idea to produce a pigs head from a bin liner which they then continully hacked at with a large knife in the middle of the venue floor. Once they had achieved this task they then produced a sledgehammer which was then used to beat the pigs head. Once the sledgehammering was over they then covered the pigs head in parrafin. When they brought out the blowtorch the power got cut and the Landlord turned up.

We appreciate that art is an ever changing thing, we're sure that certain taboos are used in performance to conjour up powerfull feelings in those who witness it, but unfortunately there are certain things that buiseness's such as ours need to take into account.

Firstly in the eyes of the law the public mutilation of any animal dead or alive is illegal.

Secondly the wielding of any blade in a public environment (especially when done by a man wearing a pigs mask thus lacking peripheral vision) is also massively illegal.

Thirdly the weilding of a sledgehammer mere feet away from the public, well by now i should think your seeing the theme here.

Fourthly having an uncontrolled fire in the middle of a room full of people is not only illegal but just plain dangerous.

and finally having any amount of the public trawling pigs blood around a pub that serves food is a health and safety nightmare. allot of things could have gone wrong, all it would have taken is one slip up and there could have been allot more for people to worry about than missing part of a music event.

At the ***** **** ******* we are not for censorship, we will put on any kind of music main stream or otherwise, if you want to play a 45 minute set with no other instrument than a set of cutlery and a biscuit tin while screaming profanities into a mic'd up dustbin then be our guest. However with a room as small as ours we dont have the capacity to hold events that involve such extreme stage antics. Im pretty sure that if you really want to mutilate a pigs head to a backing track of noise then there are places where you can get permits etc for that kind of thing, in a controlled environment where nobody is at risk.

However we cant afford to loose our jobs due to people expressing themselves, not to mention that if the event had continued then there is a distinct possibility that our Landlord could have lost his license which as im sure youll agree is a bit unfair especially when we had no prior warning about this kind of thing happening.

What it all boils down to is that one group of people managed to ruin everything for everyone else, and we will not argue with our Landlord when he has made a decision. And in our opinions that decision was the right one to make. So in future anyone wanting to do something a bit off the cuff performance wise prior notice must be given to the venue, or you risk a repeat performace of the 28th.

S&Q LIVE with MELTED MEN
De Garage, Den Haag, Netherlands. October 26th 2007.

Melted Men perform an amazing fully choreographed set that after much pre-gig gusto takes everyone by surprise and is almost impossible for S&Q to follow. It seems the audience realise this too and less than half stay to watch, but soon begin to trickle out as the set goes along, with only a handful remaining at the end. It's still a decent set under the circumstances, or at least sounded like it at the time, but Stewart's completely ancient portable cassette recorder decided not to work, so all there is to show for this 'Liver Aktion'  is one single picture :

Milovan got really drunk as usual. He'd just fallen over and banged his head moments before this picture was taken. After being blown offstage by extremely camp (but very friendly) Americans performing "theatre", the rest of S&Q now feel totally compelled to redeem themselves, but Milovan, seemingly dejected with all this Noise business, blurts "Y'know, we should just leave it to these gay guys..." and continues to drink himself into a stupor, eventually being unable to walk, so S&Q members lovingly carry their dear leader upstairs to bed whilst listening to him repeat the words "Dear me, oh dear me ... Dear me, oh dear me ..." over and over again like a mantra.

S&Q LIVE at PENISFEST
De Hondenkoekjesfabriek, Nieuwleusen, Netherlands. October 27th 2007.

Now just about recovered from the previous evening's theatrical dry-humping, everyone is absolutely determined to deliver the goods without fail today and is in good spirits. After being intimidated by a freakishly ginormous horse, we arrive at the venue, De Hondenkoekjesfabriek, an old dog biscuit factory, and of course fit right in straight away with the type of folk you'd find at a penis themed Noise festival, i.e, a bunch of complete fuckin' weirdos! The venue itself, a vibrant monument to 'Noisetrash' and degenerate 'art', is a feast for the eyes and ears of any Noise pervert and truely inspiring. No question, S&Q are back on absolute top form onstage, and offstage too, eventually succeeding in downing every last drop of alcohol in the whole place and drinking themselves sober in the process, but the riotous performance and no doubt extremely irritating antics of the whole group throughout the entire evening (including a 'serious' wedding proposal to the proprietor's wife, who was not at all amused, and clearly didn't like us, or Noise!) seem to contribute to the sudden and permanent closing of the venue soon after the event.

S&Q LIVE at CURMUDGEON 5
The Common Place, Leeds. December 8th 2007.

"S&Q deserve a mention if only for the amusement of others. I'm sure I saw a microphone put up a blokes ass - he was only wearing an small untied apron covered in blood. The apron guy also had a lighter held under his ass for longer than would have been comfortable. There were 5 of them in total all wearing pig masks. One of them drank mouthwash and handed me the bottle which had an S&Q sticker on it..."

"S&Q virtually had a standing ovation after their set, forgoing the straight up confrontational set they did a few months back, they went for a more psychedelic freak out way of messing with your mind. they were shaking strange maraca type instruments and forcing the audience into twisted congas while the noise was going on. a bit like watching some tripped out morris dancing/wickerman style stuff on a bad acid trip. and that was only half of them. the others were making some sick noise and then digging out angle grinders to destroy cymbals and a guitar. sparks flying everywhere. an incredible sight. ended with a 15/20 minute jam on some kind of 80s detroit techno sample, locking into a total motor groove while the others messed with the audience some more. simulated anal sex. the smell and quim juice bottle being thrust into the audience. ageing hippies going wild in rainbow coloured lycra leggings. audience left feeling uncomfortable but utterly compelled to stay and watch til the end. bang on. oh, and the drum kit was left in a bloody mess..."

Liver Aktions suspended whilst S&Q member serves a prison sentence for beating up a lollipop lady.

THERE WILL BE A BRAND NEW ALBUM AND FRESH LIVER AKTIONS IN 2013 AND BEYOND !!!!!

cipher chris

Smell & Quim & Onomatopoeia CDEP will see the grey of day in 2013...

Steve

Is that a new release or a re-release of "Fanny Batter"?
I whole heartedly recommend "Lavatory" album + "Paddington" book. Great release.

HongKongGoolagong

A reissue of 2000's obscure and quite brilliantly deranged SPACESHIT album which featured extensive input from Ms Holly Hero, originally put out in an edition of 100 CD-Rs on Mental Guru, will also be unleashed by Must Die Records early in 2013, and with track break markers this time so people don't have to listen all in one go - sample is at https://soundcloud.com/#hollyhero/hawaii-503

Many thanks blackoperations for putting that list together. I was somehow involved with most of it yet the memories have been surgically excised as if by alien abduction and anal probe due to the sheer amount of alcohol imbibed.

Steve

Good to know that SPACESHIT is getting another release, this could be the greatest Smell & Quim LP of all time. I find it easy to slip into the madness...no track break markers needed, just a great way to spend an hour or so.....

Big thanks to Black Operations for the S&Q history...great stuff.

blackoperations

of course it's not complete, there was a couple of other gigs too - see 'visual delights' bit of S&Q website.

i believe the S&Q/onomatopoeia on cipher prod is release of live recording at the garage in london in 2002 (was put on by RECTIVE)

That's one of the most hilarious things I've read in quite a while. The video surely isn't nearly as bad as the letter made it out to be. Christ some people are shits.

HongKongGoolagong

That venue with our pig/pork themed 2007 'comeback' show - I personally am fairly sure that the landlord of the Royal Park back then was paranoid that we were making some kind of anti-Muslim statement (we weren't, we just wanted to talk about pigs) - a huge and fairly radical Leeds mosque is very near there.

Still feel bad over blowing the whole festival for everyone else esp Phil and Mel from Ash Nav who put it on - yet simultaneously thrilled it was such a notoriously insane show.

blackoperations

NOW UPDATED WITH MORE INFO ON THE OTHER GIGS, ETC, so it is more complete basically. simon if there's anything else you think should be added, let me know soon.

the cipher prod release is 2004 Kirkstall Lites Termite Club gig recording

I remember sitting around a kitchen table at Hondenkoekjesfabriek picking at any food in the room at dawn, and realising with horror that we had entered the semi-mythical condition DRINK MYSELF SOBER for real. Apologies to the very wonderful Marc E from Fkn Bstrds and his lovely and understanding wife I guess. I had no idea before that night that you could drink yourself sober. I think it should be added to the official record of S&Q that we DRANK OURSELVES SOBER that night. Next night in Amsterdam was so great and funny too, and it wasn't even a show.

blackoperations

yes, it must've been seen as an anti-muslim thing too, but it hadn't even entered my mind it could be prior to the gig.

the gig was right in the middle of that spate of beheadings in iraq, alot of which had made the news, so standing there with the machete and holding up the pig's head, like would be done with the unfortunate beheading victim's head, was 'inspired' by that, but there was no intended statement.

to get the whole thing shutdown was the last thing anyone wanted/expected to happen. there'd been plenty other nutty gigs there, the room was downstairs out of the way, no problems were expected. the only intention was to set the standard of nutty sets for that day.

it was an over-reaction from the 'straight out of college' soundman (well, boy!). he was already being a crank in the soundcheck about volume, and what he thought it should all sound like, so i thought there'd be problems with him as the day went on, but i didn't forsee him taking it upon himself to end the set not even 12mins into it, no matter what we did, and going running to the landlord. termite clearly made a mistake not getting their own soundman that day, but we should've obviously told them what 'props' (!) we were bringing, and what could happen.

yes, the venue's statement (a blog on their myspace page) was exaggerated. it wasn't paraffin, it was mouthwash, and there was no blowtorch. the blog was up for about a week until they probably realised it was just good 'promo' for S&Q more than anything!

Steve

Who was it who said: I find as I get older, I can drink myself sober ?
It is the only way Putrefier, Dieter Muh + Harbinger Sound survived the Scando-Euro Tour of 2000.

Johann

it sounds like your thinking a fall lyric from Spector vs. Rector off dragnet

"It's like I've drunk myself sober
I get better as I get older"

thats a great story, sounds like a hell of a festival, even if it just lasted 12 minutes
