I mentioned MP3s because budget turntable gear does a similar thing to audio that MP3 compression does. At least to my ears, it does. The outcome is harsh and thin, and you don't want your playback equipment to make that modification for you. For the longest time, I thought my turntable set-up was decent. I knew it wasn't good, but I thought it was firmly decent. Then when I bumped up a couple levels and directly compared the tables, it showed how awful it really was. The positive side of nice stereo gear is that it flushes out the nuances and gives the music new life, but on the other hand, it exposes all the shortcomings of your other gear.
I have a top of the line Rotel pre-amp, and it's phono stage leaves a lot to be desired. It replaced a NAD 7240PE receiver, and the Rotel proved to be a downgrade. Those old NADs are jewels in the ruff, though. You have to get well into four figures to beat their sound, and they had particularly warm and smooth phono stages.
*your IntAmp is a few generations newer than my pre-amp, so hopefully they've improved the phono stage.
