I got many tapes what maybe looked nice in the big polycase with full color cover, but sound.. often unbearable. Not the low levels, but glitches and crackles not meant to be there.

that sounds retarded. a label guy I talked to a little while ago said that there were really shitty sounding tapes but I thought he was putting me on. how does something like that work in reality, is it possible to get your money back because thats very close to putting out a cd that skips. can you say that this is the way the tapes are supposed to sound if the master doesnt sound anything like the "finished" tape, or was this concpet art with the concept being the buyer is sucker.

I would say I would prefer a regular size package over a large ziplock bag with oversize insert or something similar.  It doesn't bother me so much, as I feel that cost may come into play?  But, honestly, after awhile, it is frustrating finding places to put these odd size special packages, even though sometimes I really appreciate the extra work and items that go along with it.

As far as Hospital's quality of cassette, I think these release from the last year sound as good, if not better than what I picked up years ago.   This recent batch has some very good material, as far as actual content.

heretogo

I agree that both "standard" and "hand-made" packaging has its time and place. And just being "hand-made" is no value in itself, unless it looks good who cares how much time & effort went into it? I much prefer a well designed "standard" release (with nice quality materials) over some bullshit pre-schooler hobbie craft thing. And as was said before, at some point you run into problems with over/awkward-size releases clogging up your shelves. If they look (& sound!) outstanding I will happily make room for them somehow - if not, I'm tempted to just get rid of 'em.
But what I really don't like are jewelcase cd releases. Standard plastic cases are ok for tapes but for cds I much prefer a nice digipak or even just a sturdy cardboard sleeve. Jewelcases just remind me too much of massmarket mid-price stuff that I can buy at any supermarket. I know they make a lot of sense economically but I wish people would find some alternatives for them. Printed digipaks are not feasible for small editions but there are always other options. A dvd-box is even worse, still...

It's funny that the same people that argued the limited nature of Hospital releases with such a high demand get upset when the runs are increased and the packaging is standardized. Obviously when dealing with 13 releases, each an edition of 200, the packaging can not be homemade. However, the design of each of the tapes is great. It seems like more of a progression from the earlier designwork than a compromise. People who argue this just have a style preference. Dom may have some design that looks like 'rubbish' but it's obviously intentional. That contrasted with the fact that he's willing to invest in color prints when there's only a dot of red in an almost-entirely black and white design shows that the design isn't cutting corners.
I'm pretty sure Dom gets his tapes pro-dubbed now. I've never heard a Hospital tape pre-2008 that sounded great - the shitty dubs would sometimes work in favor of the material on the release, but most of the time you could tell that the material suffered from shitty dubbing. Now, every tape is guaranteed to sound amazing. It's no longer 'scattered all over the place' like it was in 2004 or even 2007.
Also, Hospital still does special/homemade packaging for some releases...

Anyway,
To get back to the subject at hand, I picked up the Dilloway, K.P., and Alberich tapes. I've listened to the Climax Denial and FFH ones as well.
All of them range from very good to amazing... Nothing groundbreaking but worlds better than what most labels are putting out these days.
If these were put out in 2004-2005 as Cathartic Process suggested... I may of came all over the unique packaging because of how special it felt in my hands, but afterwards I would probably sell them because of how terrible they sounded.
It's funny that the people who pontificate about the nature of Hospital Productions on these boards always have releases for sale in the Hospital Store... the beauty of capitalism and democracy

I actually really like the direction Dom's going in with the packaging.  He still puts out handmade packaging like the Palm Tree Corpse 3xCS recently.  I certainly don't see any reason to complain about the Hospital Prod. aesthetic when there are so many labels putting out complete shit whether it be sub-par collage stuff or shitty blurred jpegs of some corpse on a PE tape.  There's no right or wrong way to do packaging, but certain things look so stupid and lame it can't possibly be intentional.  Not all of the art on the Hospital tapes as of late is mind-blowing but there is an aesthetic unity there that not too many other labels can top.

Tape in DVD/videobox size "library cover" isn't "special" unless it has some substance why such packaging is used. So personally, I'm all in favor for Hospital doing standard J-card & plastic box.

I wasn't referring to the packaging format. I was referring to the ingenuity in the overall piece of art, in terms of the artwork, design/layout, and so on. It also doesn't have to be completely hand-made, or hand-made at all. I'm just talking about putting the same time into working the artwork into a layout as a decent artist would put into mixing and mastering the original recording. Presentation is important, and most of us can realize when very little work or attention to detail goes into something and when very little has been put into the finishing touches. Hospital used to be all about the fine details. Dom's a pretty good artist, and it was much more evident in past releases I've snagged than the recent ones I've gotten my hands on. I ordered some of this batch, so I'll have a chance to compare to the ones I was able to snag, a year ago, two years, and so on. I've been following the label since it started, but very infrequently - I probably only have 10 to 20% of the releases, so maybe I've just had bad luck lately. I just have to take exception to what I've seen recently as being of "exceptional quality." It might be better than the average, but these days, that doesn't say much. It certainly doesn't warrant some of the fastest selling releases based on quality alone, as the post I was responding to claimed. If releases sold based on quality, Korm Plastics wouldn't still have copies of the Hafler Trio reissues that they put out in editions of 700 several years ago. Those contain "music" and packaging that no one in the noise scene can touch.

I generally like larger artwork. For instance, the Alfarmania tape I put out wouldn't have looked nearly as good if the art was 1/3 of the size, for instance. Most of the larger-format packaged releases I own are worthy of the additional size - the artwork couldn't have been what it is if it were condensed down to a j-card.

pestilent sermon

Distros are starting to receive tapes (here in the USA). So I'm sure some people have these now AND hopefully have listened to them. Which of the tapes are good and worth getting? Also what are the lengths of the tapes?

WAR

alberich tape is totally worth it. i believe it to be a c15.
ash pool tape also totally worth it. i'm glad i held out on the other formats. perfect as a tape. c40
chrome jesus was surprisingly good. will probably actually keep it. c20

E.I.D. tape is 24 minutes. I'll leave quality judgement to others, since I recorded it.

Pharmakon

FFH tape is completely bizarre - very minimal electronics, and not as thick or dense as they usually are. The vocal style is very unprocessed, and almost spoken. The attitude/feel of this tape is that of a broken man. Really strange, and quite unlike his other material to date.

The Climax Denial, Alberich, and Aaron Dilloway tapes are all amazing, and I would highly recommend snatching these up. None of them have time labels, but my guess would be that Climax Denial is a c20, alberich is a C10 or so, and the Dilloway tape is a c30.

Sounds interesting. Even though I've always  felt FFH stuff to be hit or miss but got this one anyway. I'm really looking forward to getting the Whorebutcher re-issue in my tape player though.

downloaded the FFH. VERY good. definitely will buy along with the whorebutcher.

Violent Noise Atrocities

Managed to get the Tortured Hooker and FFH tapes...liked them both a lot.

WAR

i just posted this question  on another forum in regards to the new Tortured Hooker cassette. i will copy/paste here:

someone PLEASE explain to me (honestly) how this is better than the new ash pool. is it because it is literally, almost unlistenable? even as far as noisecore is concerned, this is terrible. i would like to nominate any positive comments directed towards this release as prime examples of fernow blowjobbery. if this release is actually better than the previous cassettes, than i honestly don't think that i could make it through the older ones as i had to force myself to finish this one. please don't take this as trolling. i am actually curious.

ConcreteMascara

I wasn't a big fan of the first two Tortured Hooker tapes myself. One of the few items in my collection I've sold.

However, just to agree with previous comments, the new FFH is fucking great. Much better than I expected and I think a step way beyond any previous material. It has that vibe of stale, meaningless monotony and routine. It's like the horrors of personal war, but there have been so many they don't even phase you any more. Just an indifferent reading of the day's casualty list.
